Zacuto Z-DMR overview

  • 1Description

The Zacuto Marauder Foldable Camera Rig provides stable camera support for run-and-gun, guerilla-style shooting with DSLR cameras or small camcorders. The Marauder was designed to offer the same type of support as Zacuto's Striker model, but in an all-in-one, fold-away design. It features a gunstock with rubber pad, articulating handgrip, and Zacuto Gorilla Plate V2 on an adjustable support arm for attaching your camera to the rig. The Marauder folds up in a matter of seconds and when folded, is small enough to fit into a carry-on, camera bag, backpack, purse, or even your cargo pants pocket.

Adjustable Camera Support Arm
The camera support arm has a vertical or forward position, controlled by a single red push lever. Use the vertical position when attaching a Zacuto Z-Finder to your camera's LCD screen. This keeps the camera at eye level. For use without a Z-Finder, push the arm forward for comfortable viewing of your camera's LCD screen.
Gunstock with Angle Adjustment
The gunstock is pressed against your shoulder to offer better shot stability. It has a rubber pad for added comfort and offers 45 degrees of continuous adjustment. Use the included 5/32" Allen key to loosen the two screws and adjust the angle of the gunstock for a more personalized fit.
Articulating Handgrip
The handgrip angle can be adjusted to five different positions by releasing a spring-loaded red lever. This lets you put the grip in a position that is comfortable for you. The grip itself is also articulating for further positional adjustments. It is locked in place by a second lever located above the grip.
Foldable Design
The Marauder folds up in a matter of seconds. Once your camera is quick-released from the rig, simply release the two red levers to lock the camera support arm and handgrip away, and then push down on the silver cap to lift up and swing away the gunstock.
Zacuto Gorilla Plate V2
The Zacuto Gorilla Plate V2 serves as the camera mounting platform for the Marauder. The camera attaches to the plate via a single 1/4"-20 captive screw and can be quick-released off the rig by using the spring-loaded ratcheting lever on the side of the plate.

    Zacuto Z-DMR reviews

Marauder Foldable Camera Rig is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Over Priced First of all the construction is solid . Stabilisation is good and the fact it folds down to such a compact size makes it fantastic for run n gun situations. What ultimately forced me to give it 2 stars is on only the first unfolding the locking pins controlled by the red levers actually caused some quite serious scratches and indents to the frame during the articulations. This is either bad design or bad finishing off of the parts during manufacture. Whatever the case, the price tag of over $600 for something that self harms is ludicrous. I wouldn't feel so bad if this had been in the $250 region.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Zacuto catches a lot of flack because their products are somewhat pricey. However, most people that complain about their prices, haven't tried their gear. The Marauder is very well constructed and quite convenient. Pair this with a small DSLR like a GH3 and a Zacuto viewfinder and you've got the perfect handheld rig. It is extremely comfortable and conforms to the user like a glove. I will say that this rig, though it works, is not comfortable with a Canon C100 as pictured on their site...even with the top handle removed. They definitely need to stop advertising it that way because it's NOT comfortable and their company's mantra seems to be that their products make shooting with your camera ideal. If you've got a small DSLR like a GH3 or Blackmagic Pocket Camera, this is an EXCELLENT rig.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for RUN N GUN DLSR VIdeo This collapsible Camera rig fits neatly into my camera bag alongside my camera, telephoto, wide and 50mm lenses and a Zacuto viewfinder to boot. It sets up quickly and can be upgraded with a Focus Finder. So far I've found that it takes very nice, smooth action shots with camera movement using a 50mm or Wide Angle Lens. My static shots are still a bit shaky even with After Effects post-processing. I'd suggest using a Tripod or Mono-Pod for static subjects.I am inexperienced with Run and Gun shooting using this type of rig. Please take my comments with a grain of salt.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beware if you are tall! The attached photo (from Zacuto's site) shows a real ergonomic problem for anyone who is taller than average. The gunstock arm does not reach the operator's chest. If pulled into the chest, the camera ends up with a downward tilt of 20 to 30forcing the operator to arch backwards to get the camera level. A poor design - at least for me at 6' 1. Also the QC is not that good, my unit is being returned since an operating pin literally fell out, rendering the handgrip arm detents inoperable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant I have spent so much money over the years on rigs, and invariably they all fall apart. I finally coughed up the money and bought the Zacuto rig. It's amazing. So strong and robust and folds up into my camera bag. Absolutely amazing when you just want to get some video without wanting to take a huge rig with you. I've taken it up and down mountains, in the snow, dirt, everywhere. One of the best things I own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful I have used this with my Lumix Gh4 and my Canon 1Dc. It is a great portable rig and very easy to use and set up. I highly recommend it. You will get people coming up to you and ask why have you not gone for a gimbal or gyro device, but honestly you don't need it with one of these. I have found it more stable with my heavier camera, so I guess I'll just have to grow muscles. It is heavy after a couple of hours of shooting but I'm very happy with the stability, the ease of set up and the portability. It was money well spent and the quality of build is excellent.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazingly compact, fast and easy to use. I haven't had too much time to use this, but I really enjoy it so far. It's so quick and easy to set up, but I have to buy all new plates, and this was an expensive purchase, but it is solid.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expensive, but worth every penny! I use it to provide support for hand held shots with my 60D DSLR. It allows me to have a tripod look with more flexibilty than a tripod/monopod. Also, with a little software stabilization, it looks really smooth when walking with it. I love how it folds up and how it is super sturdy. It takes a little while to know which areas to push to open and close it, but with a Z-Finder Pro it is a great tool to use. Or you can have in the farther away position and use the DSLR viewfinder at its size. It feels really comforatable too. The only downside is after a 15 minute holding session or hours of using it, it does get heavy on the arms and back. But it is so much more lightweight and compact than a full DSLR rig, it makes it worth it. The camera locks on super tight to it with the Gorila place 2 and you can go to the tripod and back quickly if you get the tripod dock plate
