Senal SCS-98 overview

  • 1Description

The Senal SCS-98 DSLR/Video Stereo Microphone features a matched pair of cardioid condenser capsules that are arranged in an XY pattern to achieve accurate, natural stereo imaging. This makes it ideal for location recording, broadcast applications, live performances and capturing soundscapes in outdoor environments.

Compact and lightweight, the SCS-98 attaches to your camera's shoe mount and plugs directly into its audio input, or your portable recorder's microphone input, to capture pristine audio with realistic stereo imaging for your video productions.

The 80 Hz high-pass filter helps prevent the microphone from picking up disruptive low-frequency noise, while the three-level gain switch provides a +10 dB boost, 0 dB unity gain, or a -10 dB pad. The -10 dB pad can be used for recording louder sound sources without distortion, while the +10 dB boost can be used to achieve a higher gain signal to avoid having to use the noisy preamps aboard many cameras and camcorders, resulting in a much cleaner recording.

The SCS-98 also boasts a dual shockmount design. The two back electret condenser capsules are enclosed within a rubber decoupling system inside the microphone. This, combined with the integrated shockmount, isolates the microphone from handling noise, providing maximum isolation from vibrations and mechanical noise. The SCS-98 also features an integrated shoe-mount with a 1/4"-20 threaded socket, which lets you mount it onto a camera or boompole. In addition, a male 1/4"-20 to female 3/8" adapter is also included. The durable, 7" coiled output cable is terminated with a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo output connector and is shielded for maximum protection against interference.

    Senal SCS-98 reviews

    SCS-98 DSLR/Video Stereo Microphone is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality mic for DSLR video I bought this mic on sale from B&H, without any reviews, so I figured I'd take a chance. For the price it could not be beat. As soon as I received it I compared it to my Rode VideoMic Pro and I have to say I liked the audio this mic recorded a lot more. It's clean with no his or static. I recorded in a small room as well as a large one and the audio was crisp in both situations. Only thing I didn't do was test it outdoors or in crowded spaces. That being said I feel this mic will make an excellent interview microphone when I can't hook up a lav or handheld mic. If nothing else it still beats my in-camera mics as well as the Rode!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Microphone I am using this microphone with my Nikon D7200. You just plug it in and it works fine. It picks up much less wind noise than the built in camera microphone. I also have the windjammer for it, but have not tried that out. Fidelity is very good, and it doesn't seem to add a lot of weight to the camera, though I keep the camera on a monopod, where the weight is of less concern. Be aware that the power light only blinks briefly when you turn it on. It does not stay on. This conserves battery power.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very impressed Snagged this mic on the BH Photo daily special for a song. Attached it to my FDR-AX100 and was amazed at the quality of the sound it generated. Stylish appearence and seems well made so very happy so far. Good to have in my tool kit as a backup just in case.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little stereo mic! Great little mic that sounds good and offers stereo for a reasonable price. Build quality is very good. The backside sticks out a little too far to easily use the view finder. The power on light does not remain lit when using, hard to tell if microphone is on or battery has died.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Microphone! I use this on a Nikon D810 DSLR camera. I also have the Nikon Microphone and the D810 on board mic to compare. The two Nikon's mirror each other, recorded sound is about identical. And the SCS-98 totally kills the Nikon's. It is not just better, it is amazingly better! Clear sound, and serious stereo sound separation, even with voice recordings. I bought this on a B-D deal of the day and feel I stole it, it's well worth the normal asking price. Only slight complaint; I was working an event just this past weekend and was mostly shooting NEF's, but would go to Video from time to time. With this mic attached, I would lightly hit it into my forehead with this mic mounted into the hot shoe location. Mounted on the hot shoe it slightly overhangs the back of the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent -- quality construction and sound This is solid, well-built, convenient to use and sounds very good. I'm typically using one or more lavaliers (AT803 or Shure SM93), but when I need something to mount on a camera shoe, I'd been relying on a Rode Videomic. This sounds way better than the Rode, which is decent for the price but has a compressed, mid-rangey sound by comparison. That's not a fair comparison, since the mics are in a different class -- and I can't say how the SCS-98 would compare to a Rode Stereo Videomic, or other on-camera mics in the same price range. Still, I'm very pleased with the SCS-98. It's quiet, and there are no significant downsides or even minor annoyances (like oddly placed switches that don't work very well -- not the case here -- this product is really well engineered). The adjustable gain and the fact that it runs on a single AAA battery are plusses. It's nice that there's a high pass filter, which you'd expect, though its effect is a little more dramatic than I might have anticipated. There are other mics I'd use in other situations, but this one sounds clean and clear and may be ideal for interviews, etc., when one or more lavaliers aren't what you want.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Senal SCS-98 Video Stereo Mic I have only used this mic a few times since I purchased it. The first time I used it was to video the performance of a local high school jazz band at a local university jazz festival. The sound as recorded by the mic was excellent for the entire performance. The conductor and the band members were delighted with the results. I am looking forward to using it to video/audio record more music events. Excellent mic!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great buy I had been looking for a good affordable on camera mic. I stumbled upon the senal microphone. It was a bit more than I wanted to spend but I'm happy I put the extra money into this purchase. I use the microphone on every shoot and it has never failed. I'm still using the same battery. So the battery life is excellent. I haven't yet found anything to complain about with this mic.
