is this used to get rid of hum?
It does kill hum because it runs the signal through an isolation transformer. There's more to it though... it's main function is to connect a line-level stereo source (cd player, dvd player, ipod, etc) to a mono microphone input. The transformer combines the left and right signals to give you a clean mono output. Useful when you only have a mic input left on your board and you want to connect one of the above to it.
