Shortly after the release of the 860 EVO and PRO series SSDs, Samsung is back at it again, this time with its updated 970 series. Both EVO and PRO models are available in the M.2 (2280) form factor and feature Samsung’s Phoenix controller and Intelligent TurboWrite technology for enhanced gaming, as well as 4K and 3D graphic editing. By combining the PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe interface with the latest V-NAND technology, Samsung can push the performance and durability of its drives. Furthermore, the 970 has a nickel-coated controller and heat spreader to dissipate heat passively, maintaining optimal operating temperatures and preventing performance throttling.
Spec-wise, the 970 EVO supports read and write speeds of up to 3500 MB/s and 2500 MB/s, respectively, whereas the PRO offers up to 3500 MB/s and 2700 MB/s. Users who work with a great deal of data or large-format files will be pleased to know that the EVO is available with a maximum capacity of 2TB, and the PRO up to 1TB. Speaking of durability, both models can deliver up to 1200 TBW (Terabytes written) within a five-year limited warranty, ensuring that their performance is reliable over time. Included with the 970 is Samsung’s Magician software, a user-friendly suite of tools that you can use to keep your drive up to date, monitor drive health and speed, and even boot performance.
