It’s another exciting week here at B&H! Canon released the EOS C80 cinema camera, which combines the C400 image sensor with the form factor of the C70. Apple laid the groundwork for new iPhone 16 models, as well as upgrades to AirPods and Apple Watch. Hasselblad announced the XCD 20-35mm f/3.2-4.5 E lens, an ultra-wide zoom for X-mount cameras. Leica introduced the newest camera in the M-System lineup with the M11-D.
Canon Upgrades the EOS Series
Doubling the effective pixels of the previous EOS flagship’s image sensor, the C80 Full-Frame Cinema Camera can record up to 6K30 video with its back-illuminated CMOS sensor. The sensor in this new camera model is taken from the C400 but is now housed in a more compact body. This allows the C80 to take photos and videos with low noise, increased sensitivity, and better 4K imagery thanks to its 6K oversampling.
Triple ISO bases in both log and RAW, upgraded dual-pixel CMOS autofocus, and simultaneous 12G-SDI and HDMI outputs are designed for fast-paced shooting. An integrated, motorized ND filter unit can cycle through 10 stops of neutral density using the button controls for quick, intuitive adjustment while maintaining your depth of field.
Multiple recording formats from full frame 6K Canon Cinema RAW Light LT to cropped S35 RAW ST in 4K30 or RAW LT in 4K60, among other compression protocols, are available to C80 users. Use XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S codecs with easier naming systems, folder structure, and metadata preservation for more efficient post-production workflows. Secure fast and reliable RF lenses to the C80 thanks to its compatible lens mount and use whatever focal length makes the most sense for your project. A short flange distance reduces the camera body’s depth for a more compact overall design.
The C80 bridges the gap between the documentary cinematographer and the freelance videographer by offering professional features from the C400 in a smaller camera body. If you decide to take the plunge and invest in the C80, you can easily trick out your new camera with corresponding Wooden Camera and Zacuto accessories. Wooden Camera has released several accessory systems including the Core Accessory System, Elite Accessory System in Gold mount and V-mount variations, and Baseplate System. The accessories in these different bundles can also be purchased separately depending on the needs of your gear. Zacuto has constructed a formfitting Camera Cage for the C80 and a Z-Finder unit specifically for the C80’s LCD.
Hasselblad Provides Ultra-Wide-Angle Shooting
Hasselblad’s newest lens offering is the XCD 20-35mm f/3.2-4.5 E Lens, designed for X-mount camera bodies, and featuring an ultra-wide zoom range. Easily capture landscapes, city streets, and interesting buildings on your next trip with this versatile zoom. The lens’ focal range is equivalent to 16-27mm zoom on full-frame sensors. Three aspherical elements reduce distortion and ensure accurate rendering in medium format applications.
Upgraded focus mechanisms with a stepping motor and a small focusing group facilitate fast and responsive autofocusing. A leaf shutter system offers a range of speeds from 1/2000 sec to 68 min with flash sync at all speeds for a wide variety of creative motion effects in your imagery. Dual control rings adjust both focus and zoom for intuitive operation.
Photo enthusiasts will be excited to see this new zoom added to the XCD series given its crazy versatility in the focal length department, bright maximum aperture range, and improved operating features.
Leica Adds to the M-System Lineup
Forgoing the typical LCD screen, the new Leica M11-D Rangefinder Camera brings the analog experience into digital photography with seamless iOS connectivity to streamline your shooting experience. Capture high-quality imagery with the BSI CMOS sensor and its triple-resolution 60/36/18MP technology. The ISO dial is now placed on the back panel of the camera for easy control over the 64 – 50,000 ISO range. Store all of your images using the camera’s internal 256GB memory.
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and USB-C connectivity integrated into the camera make for speedy and secure connections with your iOS or Android device. Then, after you’ve taken your photos, make dedicated edits to the white balance, file format, and other aesthetic features all from the comfort of your mobile device. The Leica FOTOS companion app then automatically adopts certain parameters to customize the camera’s base settings without additional configuration.
For those who appreciate point-and-shoot disposable cameras and 35mm photography for their “in the moment” quality, the M11-D has the same appeal. Take the M11-D to your next party or picnic and capture your friends without needing to lug the roll of film to a photo store for development. Just plug it into your phone and instantly transfer the files.
