Sirui just announced its new line portrait-friendly Aurora 85mm f/1.4 lens, available for Sony E, Nikon Z, and FUJIFILM X mount cameras. Lightweight at 1.2 pounds and compact at 4” long, the lens benefits photo and video applications when shot handheld or when mounted on a gimbal.
In addition to its bright, f/1.4 maximum aperture, its optical design promotes both a high level of image quality and the compact, lightweight form factor. Featuring an aspherical element, two extra-low dispersion elements, and three high refractive index elements, the lens controls aberrations, flare, and ghosting while delivering excellent image resolution, sharpness, and color. When shot at the widest aperture, the lens also produces smooth bokeh and stark subject separation.
The Aurora’s autofocus is driven by an STM stepping motor for fast, smooth, and near-silent focusing. Subject and eye detection algorithms are supported, as is follow focus in video applications.
In terms of build, the lens features an aluminum-alloy construction that is resistant to dust and rain for use in inclement weather. A fluorine coating on the front element repels water, oil, and dust. The lens also features three buttons on the body to control the lens, to include an AFL button, an AF/MF switch button, and a Click ON/OFF button. A USB-C port in the rear of the lens allows for firmware updates, and a 67mm front thread supports use with light-modifying filters. The lens comes with a hood to further reduce lens flare and protect against accidental impacts, scratches, and debris.
Sirui is also releasing a 1/4 density 67mm Black Mist filter along with the Aurora 85mm f/1.4 lens, which reduces the value of highlights while slightly lowering the overall contrast.
