New Wide HD PENTAX-D FA645 35mm f/3.5 AL [IF] Lens for the 645 System

Offering a wide-angle field of view for the Pentax 645 line of medium format digital and film bodies, Pentax has just announced the HD PENTAX-D FA645 35mm f/3.5 AL [IF] lens. Providing a 27.5mm equivalent focal length when used with the digital bodies, this prime lens incorporates a sophisticated optical design that is well matched to the high-resolution capabilities of the 645Z and 645D.

While the wide-angle perspective is especially ideal for architectural, interior, and landscape applications, the use of aspherical and low-dispersion elements suits all discerning image-makers by correcting for a variety of aberrations and distortions. One glass-molded aspherical element and one hybrid aspherical element correct for spherical aberrations, while the high refractive index low-dispersion element compensates for chromatic aberrations—all three of which ensure consistent, even illumination, and sharpness from edge to edge. Individual elements also feature an HD lens coating to suppress surface reflections and flare for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in harsh lighting and backlit conditions.

Contrasting the broad field of view is an innovative close-up imaging design that combines an 11.8" minimum focusing distance, 1:4 maximum magnification ratio, and an autofocus system with an inner focusing design to maintain the overall length of the lens during operation. These features benefit creative close-up shooting applications that both exaggerate the sense of space while homing in on the fine details of a scene. Additionally, a rounded nine-blade diaphragm provides a smooth out-of-focus quality when working with selective focus techniques.

This 35mm f/3.5 lens is compatible with Pentax 645 medium format digital bodies as well as legacy film bodies, where it will provide a 21.5mm equivalent focal length. The front of the lens accepts 82mm threaded filters and the included petal-shaped lens hood incorporates a polarizer filter window for adjusting filter placement without having to remove the hood during shooting. Additionally, the front lens element has been treated with an SP (Super Protect) coating that guards against dust and grease from adhering to the lens and affecting image quality.
