Nikon Releases Updated FX-Format 70-300mm Lens

10Share

Opening the telephoto door for newcomers and advanced users alike, Nikon’s AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Lens is a superb FX-format option for DSLR users looking to capture distant subjects. The lens aims to balance zoom range with size and features by offering a versatile 70-300mm focal length, a variable maximum aperture, and Vibration Reduction that is rated to 4.5 stops. Also, it offers a pulse stepping motor that works wonderfully for stills and video, and it features full-time manual focus override, which permits quick switching by just rotating the focusing ring.

Maximizing image quality is the use of one extra-low dispersion element to combat various aberrations, and a Super Integrated Coating to limit flare and ghosting. And, as with all of Nikon’s latest glass, this lens features an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism, which ensures consistency while using fast continuous shooting speeds. DX-format users can use this lens, as well, and will benefit from an equivalent focal length of 105-450mm. The lens is dust- and moisture-resistant, making it a great choice for bringing outdoors into less forgiving conditions.

Seems a bit slow at f4.5, has anyone reported any focusing issues on a d810?

Hi Josiah,

While this specific model has yet to be made available for reviews, I would suspect the D810's AF system will be able to work with the slower aperture just fine, except in cases of extreme low light.

You're definitely not going to have focusing issues - it's way too fast for that.

However note that the listing says it won't have full compatibility with the D810. This may be due to the electronic aperture (that's what the E stands for). It is also possible that the pulse stepper AF system (that's what the P stands for) might be an issue too. What I was saying was that the max aperture of the lens will NOT be the issue that breaks AF - it's not slow enough.

Is this lens fully compatible withe the D7100?

Will this version be compatible with teleconverters?

Hi LKarnes,

Unfortunately this lens will not support teleconverters.

I have a 70-300 AF-P VR DX lens and it is super fast, quiet and a huge upgrade over the older 70-300mm VR AF-S lens. I can't wait for this FX version to come it, it even has buttons on the lens which is a huge plus for me. Just waiting till someone does a review to see how the image quality and lens performane in general is.

Did you ever get the FX version? I have a DX camera and would generally prefer the FX version due to the metal mount, better zoom ring feel, better sharpness, VR and AF switches on the body, the MF ring near the body, and faster AF - but is it >$300 more worth of lens? Both the DX and the FX versions are bargains.
