Focusrite is expanding its Vocaster lineup of products aimed at podcasters, gamers, and streamers with a new dynamic microphone, the DM14v. The microphone is available with just an XLR cable or with an XLR cable and a pair of HP60v headphones as part of its Vocaster Broadcast Kit.
DM14v Dynamic Cardioid Microphone
Dynamic microphones like the DM14v are an excellent fit for podcasting, especially in untreated home and project studios without a great deal of isolation, because the less sensitive dynamic capsule picks up fewer unwanted sounds and room reflections from farther away and more of the person speaking closely into the mic. Additionally, the cardioid polar pattern focuses audio capture in the area in front of the capsule, picking up less sound from the rear and sides. Conveniently, the dynamic capsule doesn’t require a battery or phantom power, but the DM14v does use a standard XLR connector that is compatible with a wide range of professional audio gear. One of the nice things about using an XLR mic for podcasting instead of a USB mic is the expandability factor. While generally, you can only use one USB microphone on your computer at a time with an audio interface connected, you can accommodate multiple XLR mics for guests and interviews.
The DM14v offers a voice-centered 50 Hz to 16 kHz frequency response, shaving off extreme high frequencies and effectively mitigating unnecessary lows that can muddy the sound. The mic features a built-in pop filter that absorbs wind and breath noise and reduces plosive sounds from words that begin with “B” and “P” consonants for clearer, more intelligible speech. In addition, the integrated shockmount helps to isolate the mic from vibrations, reducing handling noise.

Glad you asked, since Focusrite is sweetening the deal even further with its Vocaster Broadcast Kit, which adds a pair of HP60v headphones and a 9.8' XLR cable. The HP60v headphones are a great fit for podcasting and recording since the closed-back design keeps audio from bleeding into the microphone while you’re monitoring.
