A major announcement has come from Sony, at NAMM 2018. For the first time in 25 years, the company is introducing three new high-resolution microphones designed for professional studio and home recording applications. They include the C-100 multi-pattern vocal condenser mic, ECM-100U cardioid instrument mic, and ECM-100N omnidirectional instrument mic. Sony believes in the power of music, and that it should be captured and delivered in high resolution to be experienced in its purest and truest form. The Sony Pro Audio engineers worked in close collaboration with music producers at Sony Music to develop a line of microphones that addresses the capture end of the high-resolution recording chain, and delivers a sound with rich details and extended frequency range up to 50 kHz.

Built upon the heritage of Sony's legendary C-800G microphone, the C-100 is a side-address, large-diaphragm condenser mic with a dual-capsule design optimized for vocal use. It features a 25mm diaphragm, which covers the traditional 20 Hz to 25 kHz range, and a 17mm diaphragm, which covers the 25 kHz to 50 kHz range to capture overtones. The microphone employs the C-800G anti-vibration design to eliminate self-noise and deliver crystal-clear sound. Selectable cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure-8 polar patterns are available to support a wide variety of recording applications. There is also a switchable low-cut filter to eliminate low-frequency noise and proximity effect, and a switchable -10 dB pad to provide additional headroom.

The ECM-100U (cardioid) and ECM-100N (omnidirectional) small-diaphragm condenser microphones are designed for recording instruments of all types, live or in the studio. They feature a 17mm diaphragm, which provides a flat frequency response from 20 Hz up to 50 kHz. The mics use a two-part metallic body construction based on the C-800G design to prevent acoustic vibration and self-noise, resulting in a perfectly clear sound. They are also fitted with a switchable low-cut filter and -10 dB pad.
