NAMM 2019: Sony XLR-Equipped PCM-D10 Portable Audio Recorder

0Share

Portable audio recorders come in handy in so many situations—for live concerts, solo and ensemble performances, electronic news gathering, capturing sound effects and Foley, interviews, and more. An ideal recorder would be one that features uncompromised audio fidelity, flexible microphone configurations and inputs, and powerful processing without sacrificing compactness and portability. Since the big brains at Sony happen to agree, they've willed into reality the new PCM-D10, a portable high-resolution linear PCM audio recorder designed to answer the call, no matter where it comes from.

As far as input signal is concerned, the PCM-D10 covers quite the spectrum. Its onboard stereo microphones can be arranged in three different positions: X/Y, Zoom, or Wide. Alternatively, you can connect mic- or line-level signals to the PCM-D10's XLR-1/4" combo jacks, which offer selectable phantom power, or hook up an audio source to the 3.5mm stereo mini jack. Regardless of the input you use, a selectable dual-path limiter utilizes dual mic preamps and dual analog-to-digital converters per channel to prevent distortion; the PCM-D10 records "safety signal" into buffer memory at 12 dB below the normal record level. It even replaces overloads with the safety signal and level-compensates it. If you need to record quiet sounds at low levels, activate the High S/N mode to suppress noise.

The PCM-D10 is capable of recording in WAV format at up to 24-bit / 192 kHz, or in MP3 format at 320 kb/s or 128 kb/s. Playback support is also provided for AAC-LC, WMA, and FLAC files. You'll have plenty of recording time, thanks to the PCM-D10's internal flash memory (up to 16GB) and its SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slot. You don't have to worry about missing the start of a recording; the PCM-D10 boasts a five-second buffer that captures signal before you press record. After recording, you can even transfer files via USB Type-C!

Internal processing wizardry for playback includes a 5-band EQ, ±13 semitone pitch control, and pitch-independent speed adjustment. A slick trick of the PCM-D10 is its Bluetooth integration, which enables playback streaming to Bluetooth speakers or headphones. Speaking of Bluetooth, pair the PCM-D10 over Bluetooth to an iOS/Android smartphone running the free Sony REC app, then enjoy wireless remote control of settings and record/playback functions, as well as visual monitoring of audio levels, all through the app!

Equally advanced and easy to use, the PCM-D10 will fall in stride with your workflow whether you hold it in your hand, mount it on a tripod, or set it on a rich, mahogany desk. Visit the B&H SuperStore or cruise our website to learn more!
