Pioneer DJ: Cutting-Edge DJ Products for the Future

0Share

Pioneer has been producing cutting-edge DJ products for more than two decades. With the release of the CDJ-500, in 1994, Pioneer literally changed the game overnight, which is why Pioneer remains the industry standard on equipment riders for professional DJs and artists performing around the world. Always innovating, Pioneer continues to push the boundaries with the latest cutting-edge performance features, such as the rekordbox music management software or the latest rekordbox dj software, offering real-time digital DJ performance with dedicated controllers and DVS control, which allows you to use real vinyl records or CDs to manipulate digital music files as if they were physical records. Pioneer’s current lineup of professional products includes DJ mixers, media players, DJ controllers, effects processors, DJ headphones, studio monitors, and professional sound-reinforcement speakers for clubs and mobile DJs.

DJ Mixers

Pioneer’s current top-selling mixer, the DJM-900NXS2, is only superseded by its flagship DJM-TOUR1, which includes much of the same form and functionality, but adds a 13" touchscreen and an integrated 5-port LAN hub for Pro DJ Links. Less than half the cost of the TOUR1, the 900NXS2 is the most popular, with a professional feature set including an integrated soundcard with high-quality AD/DA converters and a 24-bit / 96 kHz resolution. Each of the four channels offers Line and Phono inputs, trim controls, 3-band EQ/ISO, and channel faders with selectable curves. The Magvel crossfader is replaceable and is rated to endure millions of performances. The mixer features Pioneer's Sound Color, Beat, and Frequency effects, and its X-Pad touch pad lets DJs manipulate and apply effects in real time. There are two top-mounted USB connections, and an additional USB port that supports iOS devices for use with Pioneer's optional RMX-1000 for iPad. An independent Send & Return section allows for external effects to be used simultaneously with the internal effects. Other notable models include the DJM-S9, a battle mixer for Serato, the DJM-250-MK2 battle mixer for rekordbox dj, the DJM-450, the DJM-750, and the advanced DJM-2000NXS.

Controllers

Pioneer offers a series of rekordbox dj software controllers and “all-in-one” DJ systems. The flagship DDJ-RZX is a professional four-channel controller for rekordbox dj and rekordbox video. The unit features three 7" touchscreens with two large aluminum jog wheels, eight performance pads per deck, built-in Beat, Sound Color, and Release FX, and a highly flexible sequencer for live performance of the pads. Other notable four-channel rekordbox controllers include the DDJ-RZ and the DDJ-RX. For portable, 2-channel controllers, check out the DDJ-RR and the DDJRB.  Like the rekordbox dj controllers, Pioneer also produces professional-quality Serato controllers, which offer much of the same form and functionality, but are designed to integrate with the Serato DJ. The DDJ-SZ2 comes bundled with the latest version of Serato DJ, the Pitch n’ Time, and the Serato Flip expansion packs. Other notable models include the DDJ-SX2, the DDJ-SR, and the super affordable DDJ-SB2. The stand-alone XDJ-RX and XDJ-R1 are completely self-contained. Both players feature professional jog wheels and integrated FX borrowed from the DJM line of mixers. The R1 offers two integrated CD players, while the RX is USB driven with dual 7" waveform displays, which provide much of the same functionality as the CDJ-2000NXS2 and the DJM-900NXS2, but in a compact, affordable package.

DJ Players

Like the DJM-Series mixers, Pioneer offers several media players with and without CD players. The flagship CDJ-TOUR1 features a 32-bit DAC and offers compatibility with files with resolutions up to 24-bit/96 kHz. The player boasts a 7 and a 13" touchscreen for navigating files, setting cue points, and providing high-quality waveform overviews. A more affordable and current industry standard player is the CDJ-2000NXS2, which offers much of the same functionality, but with a single 7" touchscreen. The unit offers 8 hot cues and features the ability to stream audio over Wi-Fi from your smartphone. An even more affordable player is the CDJ-900NXS, which features a full-color LCD screen, Wi-Fi compatibility, and offers USB compatibility. The XDJ-Series of media players offer much of the same form and function as the CDJ-Series, but doesn’t include the ability to play CDs. The XDJ-1000MK2 and the XDJ-700 offer a 7" full-color touch screen and retain the ability to stream audio over Wi-Fi, but in a really affordable package. If you’re looking for an affordable way to get into professional Pioneer media players, the XDJ-Series might be your ticket.

The unit offers a wide variety of tempo controls with pitch adjustments including ±8%, ±16%, ±50%. The PLX-500 is an affordable turntable with professional features, but well suited for home use, as well, with its USB output, switchable phono and line output, and included head shell and cartridge.

Remix Stations

Pioneer’s cutting-edge effects processors have been at the forefront of live-performance DJs and studio production. The RMX-1000 features real-time DJ effects, a sampler, and a variety of performance controls. The unit includes scene effects for build-ups and breakdowns, as well as isolator FX, release FX, and more. The RMX-500 is a scaled-down version, but is quite capable, nonetheless. The unit provides release FX, rhythm FX, a 4-beat sequencer, and includes software plug-ins for integration into your DAW environment.
