Walk the Road of Better Audio with the RØDE NTG5 Short Shotgun Mic

3Share

The NTG series from RØDE Microphones holds particular esteem in the film, audio for video, and radio worlds. Now, B&H is proud to help launch a new shotgun microphone to the fold, the NTG5 Moisture-Resistant Short Shotgun Microphone.

Fitting into the series as a smaller and lighter entry than the NTG3, the NTG5 is perfect for run-and-gun filmmakers, news-gatherers, and tape-syncers. It offers a flat frequency response up to 2 kHz, where it gives you a slight bump to favor the human voice. Below 100 Hz, the microphone naturally rolls off, leaving rumbly room noise in the dust.

Imagine there’s a person situated in an air-conditioned room—and you need to pick up everything they say for your film, television, podcast, or radio piece; use the NTG5, and the recording will favor the vocals over the meddlesome air conditioner, doing so in a natural fashion, thanks to the construction, size, and weight of the mic itself.

The NTG5 offers a design unique to the lineup. Instead of the linear slots you see on other shotgun mics, the NTG5 provides circular acoustic ports. The implementation of these tiny circles results in a highly directional polar pattern, one that retains transparency: off-axis elements won’t seem deadened or muffled due to their placement; instead, they’ll drop in level.

NTG microphones are noted for their toughness in the face of sonic adversity, and here the NTG5 is no slouch: it boasts the same RF-bias condenser tech as other capsules in the NTG series. This time-tested design lets you work in high-humidity environments without fear of audio faltering. However, the NTG5 goes one step further, incorporating a circuit board with a conformal coating that bolsters its durability by protecting it from moisture, dust, and temperature extremes.

Because the mic is light—only 2.7 oz—the NTG5 is a sound recordist’s dream: it sits easily upon booms and pistol grips. In fact, it presently ships in a kit that includes the PG2-R Pistol Grip Shockmount. This shockmount, paired with an included PG2-R Pro Cable, ensures handling noise is a thing of the past. A foam and furry windscreen are also included, so whether you work outdoors or on a soundstage, you can bring your NTG5 to the job.

Of course, you can’t do that if you don’t have one to begin with. So come by our SuperStore or visit us online to check one out today. If you like what you hear, pick one up; we’re proud to be launch-partners with RØDE for this exciting new microphone.

It will be interesting to hear this mic. I have a lot of the other popular RODE mics and if it follows the trend, it should be a great product.

Does it have a camera-top 1/4x20 mount as well?

Hi Edward -

No it does not.  But an adapter could be used with the included
