The new RED KOMODO 6K cinema camera is a bit of a marvel as far as cinema cameras go, with its tiny, modular form, high-resolution 6K sensor, and its extensive set of features. Not long after its release, it has even more going for it—a seemingly endless list of accessories manufactured by RED, as well as several other manufacturers. Since it is highly modular, there are loads of great accessories available as far as card media, output, power, adapters, supports, remote control, and monitors go that will all help you capture incredible cinema-quality footage.
Media and Output
The RED KOMODO is compatible only with a specific type of internal card media, so be sure to pick up a RED PRO CFast 2.0 512GB media card—or even grab a two-pack—to make sure your RED RAW shoot will be safely captured. To offload the footage, the handy RED CFast 2.0 card reader will transfer your footage to a computer.
Expansion and Lens Adapters
The KOMODO brain features a Canon RF mount that natively fits the compact Canon RF type cinema lens line, but if you want to use your existing PL mount cinema lenses, Wooden Camera has released a Canon RF to PL Mount Pro Lens Adapter. Tilta has also released a PL mount adapter lens support for its companion KOMODO cage that offers additional support for larger lenses so it doesn’t damage the camera’s lens mount.
To expand your camera functions, RED offers the Expander Module, which adds power, genlock, timecode, GPI, and 4-pin control interfaces, and it can be mounted on a cage or rig using multiple mounting options. Don’t forget a Timecode Cable and a Genlock Cable to go with it.
If you’re not using the KOMODO Outrigger Handle (see below), the RED Link Adapter mounts on the KOMODO link port and offers a USB Type-C connector so you can live-preview using the RED control feature with your iPhone. It will also allow an optional USB Type-C to Ethernet adapter to control the camera over a LAN connection.
Similar to RED’s Expander Module, Wooden Camera offers the B-Box, a breakout box that offers control and input/output options to the camera such as run/stop, genlock, 5V USB power output, timecode, and CTRL ports in a single, low-profile attachment.
Monitors
SmallHD has created some very handy software integration with the RED KOMODO so that you can control the camera directly from a select group of its monitors using the latest SmallHD PageOS 4 firmware. The company has released RED KOMODO camera control kits bundled with its latest INDIE 7, FOCUS Pro, and FOCUS Pro OLED monitors, and you can even pick up a RED KOMODO control kit for the Cine 7 and 702 Touch; just make sure you upgrade to the latest monitor firmware, if you already own one.
It will also be helpful to mount your monitor onto your camera rig or cage, so offerings such as the Wooden Camera Arca-Type Monitor Hinge Kit and the SmallHD Hinge Mount will make sure your monitor is secure and can be adjusted to your preference.
Cages, Grips, and Plates
Since the camera is so small and modular, you’ll definitely want to protect your investment and add accessory mounting options to your RED KOMODO. The Wooden Camera Base Accessory Kit features a durable Baseplate with an Arca-type plate, 15mm LWS rod ports, and rosette mounts, and a top mount kit with a top handle, top plate with 15mm rod ports, and a monitor hinge.
The RED Outrigger Handle offers a low-profile design for handheld operation as well as to control run/stop operations. It has two ¼"-20 threads for additional accessory mounting, and it can rotate 360° for optimal positioning. If you don’t need the electronics of the Outrigger Handle, you can utilize the Wing Grip to add numerous accessory threads and a durable side grip.
There are also numerous partial and full cages available to protect the camera while keeping the camera’s ports and slots available, while adding numerous accessory mounting options and protection.
- The modular 8Sinn Cage Kit features a top plate, a top handle, and a cage that adds mounting to the bottom and sides of the camera.
- Zacuto offers a similar camera cage kit that is even more modular, allowing you to utilize each part or remove it when it isn’t needed.
- Tilta offers a series of cages starting with the Kit A, which includes a cage, top tilt mount, quick release plates, and wooden handgrip, adding more components to the further cage offerings, such as a top handle, 15mm LWS baseplate, and battery mount.
Power and Cables
Be sure not to forget to add all the plates and cables you need for power, control, and connectivity, and there are many options being added all the time, so keep checking back:
- The RED AC power adapter lets you power the camera when mains power is available to save your batteries.
- Since there is a dual BP-type plate and you’ll want to get extra batteries for a long shoot, BLUESHAPE offers the high-capacity 72Wh BP-975 battery, compatible with the KOMODO.
- If you’d prefer to use a high-capacity V-mount battery rather than the dual BP-mount on the camera, Tilta and Core SWX offer V-mount plates that mount on the camera’s dual battery plate.
- Wooden Camera offers V-Mount and Gold Mount Battery Slide kits that each offer a D-Tap output to power the camera.
- Power the camera from a separately mounted high-capacity battery using a D-Tap to LEMO-type cable from Core SWX or from Wooden Camera.
Extras
Finally, an important addition for the camera is extended warranty coverage from RED that adds a year to your standard warranty, in case of any issues that arise. If you run a shop or rental facility, or just like to collect camera replicas, pick up a wooden replica of the RED KOMODO from Wooden Camera.
