Top LED Panels for Virtual Production

LED panels are a key component of the LED volume walls that form the backdrop for virtual production, an increasingly popular technique used in feature film and television production. This emerging technology enables productions to recreate the look of fictional worlds, far-flung or difficult-to-access locations, or multiple real-world sites in the controlled, safer, and more comfortable environs of a soundstage. Crucial specs to look for in an LED panel include a low pixel pitch of <3mm (high-density pixel count), high brightness levels, fast refresh rates, wide viewing angles, and support for higher camera frame rates.

Background Wall

Each of the panels below support key factors like a fast refresh rate of 7640 Hz to support the 60 fps rate used for smooth motion capture, brightness of 1500 cd/m² or higher, and accurate color reproduction using the pro DCI-P3 color space. The pixel pitch spec should be smaller the closer your camera will be positioned to the background since proximity reveals finer detail.

Award-winning Roe Visual panels have been used on some of the largest LED volumes constructed. Their BP2V2 2.84mm LED Video Wall Panel can be stacked in configurations of up to 12 panels or hung in builds of up to 20 panels. The deep black BP (Black Pearl) surface has an antireflective design that helps to minimize reflections from light sources on your set. These 19.7 x 19.7” panels have a 7680 Hz refresh rate and a 2.84mm pixel pitch that is suitable for capture at 14’, making them ideal for larger stage setups. The LED cabinets have a durable magnesium frame with magnet-assisted assembly and can be assembled with up to 10˚ concave curve.

Sony’s 2.3mm pixel pitch VP-Series P2.3 Display Cabinet is available in versions configured for use with either Brompton or Megapixel servers and processors, both widely used in virtual production setups. These cabinets maintain their factory color and alignment, enabling them to be readily swapped out in a VP-series array with minimal calibration.

Planar Systems offers a wide selection of LED panels including the Venue Pro VX Series VPI-2.5VX B Indoor LED Video Wall Cabinet featuring a fine 1.5mm pixel pitch for up-close video capture, excellent color reproduction, and easy, single-user setup via a quick-lock system.

Get a head start on setting up a virtual production stage for corporate or educational use by using a volume wall kit. Fabulux offers LED FC 1.9mm Wall Kits with Hanging and Floor Mount options for creating a 13 x 13’ wall. Each of the wall’s 27.8” panels have a pixel pitch of 1.9mm, enabling you to shoot from a minimum distance of just 6’, making it a great choice for a small to medium stage. These flexible walls can provide up to a 45° curve using 10 adjustable angles, letting you easily position your camera so as not to see off the edge of the set. These kits include a 16-channel LED display driver with a receiver chip for use with a separately available receiver and two processors.

Ceiling

When extending your LED volume setup to include a ceiling area, high brightness is a key panel function since it will likely be used to simulate the sky ̶– which even on a cloudy or rain-swept day is still significantly brighter than typical interior lighting. Check out PIXREAL’s ENZO Series 23.91mm LED Panel for bright, full wavelength ceilings. These 39.4 x 19.7” panels provide a robust 4500 cd/m² brightness ̶– triple the 1500 cd/m² of many LED wall units. Their RGBW LEDs incorporate white emitters that enable the panels to create a broader, more natural light spectrum. Since your camera is probably going to be shooting the ceiling effect from an extended distance, the pixel pitch does not need to be as fine as for a setup where the camera may be positioned within 20’ or less from the LED wall panels.

Vu Technologies’ advanced LED Ceiling Panels are specifically designed for creating a sky effect. Alternating rows of pixels on each panel are removed, enabling gaffers to position lights above the volume ceiling which serves to both increase brightness and create rays that simulate sun flares. The spaces between the pixel rows also support the addition of camera tracking-system stickers, ensuring accurate positioning throughout any camera moves.

Floor

In addition to the specs outlines above, a solid, durable build and front service access are key when using LED panels to create a floor in your volume stage. Here, ROE Visual delivers with their Black Pearl BM4 Matte line, which consists of LED modules that fit into BM4 Base Frames that you configure as needed. These 24 x 24” LED floor tiles feature a 4.76 mm pixel pitch, 2,000 cd/m² brightness, up to 3840 Hz refresh rate and a broadcast/ XR friendly matte surface. They are IP65 rated for use with water effects, front‑serviceable, and are both walkable and support scenic loads. The BM4 Matte is part of ROE’s Black Marble series (glass and mirror variants also exist), but the Matte version is specifically optimized for on‑camera environments and virtual production. In ROE‑based XR volumes, BM4 Matte floors are typically paired with ROE indoor XR tiles such as Ruby (RB/VX), Diamond, or Black Pearl II for walls and ceilings, offering high refresh rates, deep black masks, and strong off‑axis performance.

Planar’s LED ecosystem includes the CarbonLight CLF VX or Leyard ALF‑S walkable floor tiles with pixel pitch options ranging from 1.5 mm to 2.6 mm on the ALF-S series, which is rare, as the usual floor panels are around the 2.6mm pixel pitch.

The LG LBCJ026-GM 2.6mm LED Display Cabinet has been used to create a snow-packed floor and more, heightening an immersive feeling in scenes of the great outdoors. Each die-cast magnesium alloy cabinet consists of two 19.7 x 9.8” panels with selectable service access, a handy feature when the cabinet is arranged as a floor surface.
