Absen Helps Power Trilogy Studio’s Next-Gen Virtual Production Facility

Absen Helps Power Trilogy Studio’s Next-Gen Virtual Production Facility

Trilogy Studios was developed as a cutting-edge virtual production facility designed to support film, television, automotive, commercial, and branded content creation. Rather than building a single LED volume, the team behind Trilogy Studios envisioned a comprehensive, multistage environment that would provide content creators with the flexibility to produce a wide range of projects within a controlled and highly immersive production space.

To bring this vision to life, Trilogy Studios partnered with virtual production systems integrator Optic8, alongside LED display manufacturer Absen and LED processing specialist Brompton Technology. The result? A sophisticated multistage virtual production environment powered by Absen’s high-performance LED displays and Brompton’s Tessera SX40 LED processors.

The Challenge

Trilogy Studios was never going to be conventional. It was always meant to be something more than a traditional virtual production stage. The goal was to create three purpose-built production environments, each optimized for different content creation requirements while maintaining exceptional image quality, reliability, and workflow efficiency.

This ambitious vision introduced several challenges. Each stage required a unique design approach, with camera placement, shooting distances, lighting conditions, practical sets, vehicle integration, and production workflows influencing the shape and structure of the LED volumes.

Curved LED walls needed to appear natural through the camera lens, while ceiling-mounted displays had to contribute realistic lighting, reflections, and depth. Additionally, movable walls and motorized ceiling systems were required to allow rapid stage reconfiguration without compromising image quality.

Because virtual production environments are viewed directly through cinema cameras, even minor inconsistencies in flatness, brightness, alignment, or seams could become visible on screen.

The project therefore demanded a solution that went beyond mere installation. It required careful product selection, sample validation, precise engineering and structural adaptation, as well as responsive on-site support to achieve professional production standards across all three stages.

The Solution

To realize the project’s lofty vision and answer its many challenges, multiple solutions were required.

Stage Design Solution

Optic8 designed the infrastructure for each of the three dedicated virtual production stages:

Stage 1: A large-scale cinematic volume designed for immersive storytelling and complex productions.

Stage 2: An automotive-focused stage featuring six movable LED walls and five motorized ceiling screens to create realistic driving environments and vehicle reflections.

Stage 3: A flexible commercial production stage optimized for fast-turnaround content and smaller-scale projects.

Product Solution

Following extensive validation and on-camera testing, Absen’s PR Series LED displays were selected based on their performance in key virtual production metrics, including color accuracy, contrast, scan-line behavior, low-brightness performance, flatness, and overall camera consistency.

Rather than implementing a single display configuration across the facility, Absen customized the LED deployment according to each stage’s specific production requirements. This approach allowed the facility to combine fine-pitch backdrops, cinematic LED volumes, and ceiling-mounted displays within one integrated virtual production platform.

The PR Series delivers features specifically designed for in-camera visual effects (ICVFX) workflows, including:

  • Up to 99.9% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage

  • HDR support

  • 16-bit grayscale processing

  • 7680 Hz refresh rate

  • Low-scan design

  • Up to 10,000:1 contrast ratio

  • Support for frame rates up to 251 Hz

Structural Solution

To further enhance performance, Absen engineered an ultra-low-profile base system that minimized visible gaps between the LED walls and studio floor. High-precision curve locks and custom structural components ensured alignment and flatness across the curved LED volumes, creating seamless transitions between practical sets and virtual environments.

As installation progressed, Absen also developed specialized ceiling grip systems and incorporated waterproof treatments to accommodate real-world production demands, including water effects, practical effects, and evolving stage requirements.

System Integration

The LED ecosystem was powered by 32 Brompton Tessera SX40 processors, which were chosen for their reliable processing performance, advanced calibration capabilities, and seamless communication with the PR Series displays. Technologies such as Dynamic Calibration, Extended Bit Depth, and ShutterSync helped ensure consistent image quality and synchronization across the facility’s multiple stages.

Technical Support Solution

Absen provided technical support throughout the entire project, from product selection and validation to structural adjustments and on-site issue response. This close collaboration and hands-on technical support helped ensure all three stages were designed and delivered with the precision, reliability, and flexibility required for professional virtual production.

The Results

The completed Trilogy Studios facility now offers creators a highly versatile state-of-the-art virtual production environment capable of supporting a broad range of content formats and production scales.

In fact, since its opening, the Trilogy Studios has already been utilized for major productions, including Merit Street: PBR Teams and Lanie Gardner’s official music video, Lord Knows.

The combination of Absen’s LED technology, Brompton’s processing platform, and Optic8’s systems integration has enabled workflows that expand creative possibilities while simplifying production execution.

Industry partners have praised the installation for its performance and ease of use. According to Optic8, the PR Series panels have proven consistent, lightweight, easy to assemble, and highly compatible with Brompton’s processing technology. Trilogy Studios has likewise embraced the integrated solution as a key part of its future-focused production strategy.
