With firmware version 2.0 out, the Sony FX3, a compact cinema camera, now has all the capabilities required for the “Netflix approved” designation. The reason for this certification was the addition of true timecode sync that uses the newly created VMC-BNCM1 Timecode Adapter Cable, allowing the FX3 to fit more easily into professional workflows, especially in multi-camera environments.
If you choose to use an FX3 on a production, be aware that only certain settings—primarily the XAVC S-I 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 codec—provide the quality required by Netflix. You should also shoot in Cine EI mode with S-Log3 as your gamma profile and S-Gamut3 or S-Gamut3.Cine as your color gamut.
High-speed recording up to 120 fps is also permitted using the same XAVC S-I settings in the S&Q recording mode, although this requires a CFexpress Type A card. Additionally, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that recording raw video with the help of an Atomos Ninja V guarantees maximum quality.
