A SmallHD Monitor for Small Cameras, the FOCUS 5" On-Camera Monitor

0Share

If you’re looking for an HD monitoring solution that won’t outsize your small mirrorless or DSLR camera, the SmallHD FOCUS might be just right for you. The 5" touchscreen monitor connects via a single HDMI cable and is designed to fit right into a standard camera accessory shoe by way of its tilt arm. The arm itself is better designed for on-camera monitoring, compared to a standard ball-mount, because the monitor will always be level to the camera. Whether the camera is up high or down low, the tilt arm, as its name suggests, allows for the monitor to be tilted toward the operator for ease of monitoring.

The HDMI video connection is not the only camera connection available. Many mirrorless cameras suffer from short battery life. Using separately available dummy batteries, the FOCUS monitor can provide power from its own L-series battery. L-series batteries are widely available, generally high in capacity, and compatible with many other shooting essentials, so powering your camera this way can be very convenient. If you know which camera you’re going to predominantly use the FOCUS monitor with, kits for cameras powered by Canon LP-E6, Canon LP-E8, Nikon EN-EL14, Panasonic DMW-BLF19, and Sony NP-FW50 batteries are available. Along with the dummy battery, the kits also come with an L-series battery, an L-series charger, and compatible HDMI cables. For DSLR and mirrorless cameras that don’t provide headphone-monitoring capabilities, the FOCUS can de-embed the audio signal from the HDMI input for live audio monitoring.

Like most SmallHD monitors, the FOCUS gives you the ability to monitor with a LUT, perfect for cameras that use Log picture profiles. Simply load the LUT via the SD card slot and you’re good to go. The intuitive Swipe OS (based on the PageBuilder OS available on the 500- and 700-series monitors) makes advanced functions easy to access and activate. The screen itself is bright, with an output of 800 cd/m², so viewing in daylight without a hood is possible.

SmallHD’s FOCUS 5" monitor complements the fast workflows for which mirrorless and DSLR cameras are so well suited. For those in the market for a small, fast, and high-quality monitoring solution to go along with a mirrlorless or DSLR camera, the FOCUS monitor should be a consideration.
