Following up on RED Digital Cinema's announcement of its streamlined camera array, here is a more detailed look at the new RED lineup. In a nutshell, RED is offering a choice of three image-sensor options, each packaged in the same DSMC2 BRAIN (camera body), but with capture options attuned to specific production needs. The three cameras are the crème-de-la-crème MONSTRO 8K VV, the workhorse HELIUM 8K S35, and the low-light specialist GEMINI 5K S35. Each is priced more economically than before, and all share the same high-speed frame-rate choices, data rates up to 300 MB/s, interchangeable lens mounts, and DSMC2 accessory components.
Starting at the top, the MONSTRO 8K VV offers compatibility with full-frame 35mm cinema lenses, and is based on the widescreen VistaVision format (that's where the "VV" in the name comes in—it's not a "W" in some strange typeface.) VistaVision cameras ran 35mm film horizontally rather than vertically; to get that immersive, all-encompassing feel, the MONSTRO 8K VV employs a sensor that is about 30% wider than the other DSMC2 cameras. With a 35.4MP sensor recording up to 8K full-format video at rates up to 60 fps, 17+ stops of advertised dynamic range, and 2x, 1.3x, and 1.25x anamorphic options, this is the ultimate RED choice for cinematic feature production, stunning HDR image processing, and VF/X-heavy productions.
The HELIUM 8K S35 shares the same recording resolution, frame rate, and anamorphic options as the MONSTRO 8K VV, but incorporates a smaller image sensor, designed for classic Super-35mm-style capture. Priced more affordably for independent film and television creators, this configuration enables you to select from the vast choice of Super 35 lenses available for this tried-and-true format. The rich, detailed shading of HDR imaging is supported by the HELIUM 8K S35's 16.5+ stops of dynamic range.
If you're creating a moody drama, slice-of-life documentary, or capturing a minimally lit performance, look to the GEMINI 5K S35 - RED's dual-sensitivity camera with a native, higher ISO for use in lower-light environments. Users can quickly switch between Standard and Low Light ISO modes for up to 5K capture, including 2x and 1.3x anamorphic options. Full format 5K can be captured up to 96 fps, and full 2K is available at rates up to 240 fps for slow-motion recording.
The DSMC2 BRAIN features include a built-in media bay, cable-free monitoring choices, wireless control, and compatibility with both RED and a wide selection of dedicated third-party camera accessories. Each of the DSMC2 camera configurations can record simultaneously in REDCODE RAW and Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD/HR, providing proxy recordings for a quick editing workflow.
