Westcott 2349 Overview

  • 1Description

The Westcott 43" Apollo Orb Speedlite Kit is an ideal way to take studio quality lighting on the road with your optional studio strobe, speedlite or hot light. The kit contains a 43" Apollo Orb Softbox, a 28" Medium Apollo Softbox, two 8' light stands, two Adjustable Shoe Mount Brackets and a gear bag to store and transport it all.

The Apollo Orb works without an adapter ring; simply opening like an umbrella. Place your flash inside, attach the included diffusion panel and you're ready to shoot. The Orb has a deep profile which evenly projects the light source for maximum output while creating round, natural catchlights in the eyes. For even more directional control and to prevent lens flare, you can recess the diffuser closer to the light than its standard position. The Orb can be used with flash or constant light sources up to 500W.

The 28 x 28" Apollo is a softbox based on an umbrella frame and fabricated from fiberglass for added durability. It needs no speed ring to attach it to a flash head. Simply open it, and slide the shaft into the umbrella receptor on the flash head or the umbrella swivel supporting your speedlite. The 28" Apollo can be used with flash, fluorescent sources or hot lights up to 500W.

Apollo Orb Duo Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from I've found the sweet light ! This is the perfect location kit I can use for doing a few headshots or executive portraits on location using my speedlights when I don't need to lug out all the corded lights and deal with extension cords, finding a place to plug in, worrying about someone tripping over my cords, etc. They produce a beautiful soft even light . My only problem with this kit is the range of tilt that's possible once everything's set up. You pretty much have to leave them aiming straight out . Also, once a speedlight is sealed up inside, you need to keep pulling the velcro open on the diffusers to make adjustments . This isn't a problem , though , with my Lumedyne unit with a separate controlable power pack outside the softbox or orb.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Portable, Beautiful Soft Light I bought this to take some new headshots of my wife for her acting resume along with a Westcott X-Drop. I also ordered a heavy duty Impact light stand and a Smith Victor MB150 boom arm so I could position the 43 Orb slightly above the subject as the keylight in a clamshell lighting scenario with the 28 softbox directly below for fill. The Apollo kit sets up quickly and easily and produces beautiful soft light. If you need a portable backdrop I strongly recommend buying the X-Drop to go with this. The included carrying case is definitely a welcome addition. I'll be bringing this kit into the office to help a few co-workers update their LinkedIn profiles. I used this with three Canon 600ex-rt's with a Canon ST-E3-RT wireless transmitter and it's a wonderful setup (a speedlight in each softbox plus one to light the backdrop). I use the 600ex-rt's and my camera in manual mode using a Sekonic 478D to adjust the power on the flash units and shoot tethered to my MacBook Pro with a 27 Apple Cinema display from a tripod using my Canon 6D with 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. I'm also using an ExpoDisc to set the color balance. I remember reading Douglas Kirkland saying something like Try to create the best photo you can in camera - I guess I may have taken his advice too far :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality and fast setup These setup super fast. They open like umbrellas and the diffusers go on super fast. The light quality is great with just speedlights. The only issue is that the center pole doesn't line up with the hole. You have to open it a little, line up the pole and then pull it to open the softbox. The also close up fast as well. The bag is great too. I bought the strip box and was able to fit it and the stand in this bag too. Great quality bag. The only bad things are the stands. They suck. Cheap quality. Can't complain for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy I invested in this gear I bought this equipment to help me light my portrait and event work and I am very happy with the gear. The stands are sturdy and the light boxes work like I wanted them to do. I like the ease of setup and the carrying case helps me keep it and a couple other things conveniently packed away. I have no complaints about it so far, but I have only used it once on a shoot. I plan on using more soon to help me on a couple personal projects.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Happy for the most part despite some issues I'm a fan of the Apollo series and have a few other sizes in my kit that have been in use for over 2 years. I purchased this set a few weeks back and have used them on several editorial assignments and one family portrait session. The large Orb has a tendency to collapse on it's own, usually when repositioning the stand. May be user error, but it's happened 3x now and I have made a point to make sure it's locked in place after the first collapse. One of the cold shoes provided tightens off center, this is more of an annoyance than anything else as the speed light inside has a rotating head and I can position where I want but one would expect a new piece of equipment to work properly at least the first time... The zipper pull-tab on the bag is flimsy and about to break after 3 sessions. I like the bag construction otherwise, but this is also something unexpected from a new bag... Other than that I love the portability and plan to continue to use them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far - so good I really like these units and the portability. I opted to use a heavier duty stand for these but outside of that they really make great light for my shoots so far. I typically mount the 43 Orb on a boom arm to make tilting it more flexible. 4 Stars primarily due to the lightweight stands that come with this kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great starter kit! Just used this set up for an event this weekend and it worked perfect. Took a couple minutes to set up, not as fast as a set up like the Rapid Box but still pretty quick. The set up is lightweight and with the travel bag it makes it great for on the go!

Will this work with AB 400?
Asked by: Jill G.
AB 400s can be mounted within the modifiers. The Optical slave in the AB may not respond through the softbox so radio triggers or direct sync cord triggering would be best. Facing the strobe towards the rear of the box will create a more even distribution of the light.

Could anyone provide any advice as to differences in the Rapid Box 2 kit versus the Apollo Duo kit?
Asked by: Leon B.
The Rapid Boxes have a bracket at the back of the soft box to mount the speedlights. The Apollo units have the speedlight mounted inside the soft box making it more difficult to adjust and requires wireless triggers. The Rapid Octo is actually 26 VS Apollo which is 43 so bigger and potentially softer. The other soft box is a strip instead of larger square. The Rapid Boxes might work with IR triggering if you have line of sight.
