RODE VideoMic GO Overview

This B&H Kit includes the Rode VideoMic GO camera-mount shotgun microphone and a Rode DeadCat GO furry windshield, providing a simple mic setup for quality indoor or outdoor audio recording using any camcorder or HDSLR camera that supplies plug-in power. The DeadCat GO slips over the VideoMic GO to deliver effective wind noise reduction and tonal transparency without impeding the microphone's shockmount or cable run.

RODE VideoMic GO Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone

Longer than Rode's VideoMicro and with a narrower pickup pattern, the Rode VideoMic GO camera-mount shotgun microphone offers enhanced off-axis rejection for tighter directionality. Like the VideoMicro, it runs on plug-in power and has no controls or switches, making it well suited for mobile journalists, vloggers, and run-and-gun shooters in a hurry.

This compact and lightweight shotgun microphone features an integrated shockmount that mounts directly to your DSLR, mirrorless, or video camera and reduces noise from vibrations and camera handling. The windscreen design reduces wind noise, making it well suited for outdoor shoots. The detachable coiled 3.5mm TRS cable ensures easy hookup to your camera, and the dual-mono output means that no channel selection is necessary on your recording device.

Shotgun Mic with Directional Sound Pickup
Whereas most built-in camera microphones pick up sound from all directions, this microphone utilizes a supercardioid polar pattern to focus on sound in front of it while attenuating sound from the sides and rear. Its active electronics and directional condenser element deliver more detailed audio than the mics typically found in cameras and portable recorders.
Easy Hookup to Camera
A detachable coiled 3.5mm cable is supplied for fast hookup to your camera. The cable is wired in a dual-mono configuration, ensuring that the mic signal is sent identically to both input channels of your camera or portable recorder.
Runs on Plug-In Power
No batteries are required to operate the VideoMic GO. Just connect the microphone to your camera or recorder, enable plug-in power on the device, and forget about swapping or charging batteries.
Integrated Shockmount Inhibits Vibrations
Understanding that the rubber bands used in many shockmounts can snap and stretch, Rode chose to integrate a rugged Rycote Lyre suspension-style shockmount. This simplifies setup of the mic and inhibits the transfer of vibrations from the camera. Plus, the bottom of the shockmount features a camera shoe mount with a 3/8" thread, ensuring easy attachment to your camera or a boompole such as Rode's Micro Boompole (available separately).
Windscreen Minimizes Wind Noise
The VideoMic GO has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of wind noise in outdoor environments, consider a furry windshield such as the Rode DeadCat GO (available separately).
Connectivity Options
Expand the microphone's device compatibility with Rode accessories such as the SC4, SC7, and VXLR+ (all available separately). With either the SC4 or SC7, you can connect the VideoMic GO directly to a smartphone or tablet equipped with a 3.5mm TRRS jack. The VXLR+ adapter is the ideal solution when you want to record the VideoMic GO to a camcorder or mixer that has XLR inputs.

RODE DeadCat GO Artificial Fur Wind Shield for the VideoMic GO

The Rode DeadCat GO is a furry wind cover for the VideoMic GO, designed for use indoors to protect from air conditioner drafts, and outdoors to protect from wind noise. Its artificial fur is specially designed to minimize wind noise while remaining acoustically transparent.

Microphone still ticking after plastic holder broke

This has been a workhorse on-camera shotgun for me - got very good audio in difficult environments. The microphone still works after nearly more than 5 years of abuse - the red plastic holder sadly snapped but nothing some duct tape couldn't fix (almost). A good don't worry if it breaks microphone - knocked a star because it didn't have an easy way to fix the broken holder.

My in-door evaluation so far has shown minimal off-axis attenuation of noise but it still beats the camera's built-in mics, especially for handling mechanical noise. I'll probably upgrade to the Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid, although at three times the price, but will first give the VideoMic Go more opportunities to prove itself.

Great for the price but bad support experience

I bought one of these a couple of years ago. On the first shoot, I discovered that it buzzed, picking up noise from any nearby almost any nearby electronics. Contacted Rode, they basically dismissed my issue, saying it was just how they are. I threw away the mic as it was out of the return window. Recently, I needed a mic in a pinch, and a friend offered me his. Same model, but no noise issue. In fact, the mic itself is quite good for the money. Star off for dismissing customer.

I am coming from the Rode VideoMicro Ultracompact Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone, which I returned because of a constant modulating noise, like a frrrr, on the background. It was low, probably unnoticeable with added music and VO but it was there and I could not live with it. Also tried another very short 3.5mm TRS cable, nothing changed. Swapped with this other Rode. First of all it still picks up a lot of the surroundings sounds, if you are looking for isolation or you are working in noisy environments look somewhere else. This mike is not a night and day difference from the VideoMicro Ultracompact, a bit better but not worth the additional $45. The other issue is still electrical noise, this time a 60 HZ hum. The Low Cut filter on camera helps as well as filtering in post. BTW this mike seems to work just with its Rode cable. Not happy with my experience and believe at this point there is some shielding issue with these products. For the record, my camera is a FUJIFILM X-T3, not expecting its mic pre to be state of the art and could not test/compare other similar mikes but I doubt that is the problem. It could be but then it should generate the same type of noise for any mike connected. The internal camera mike is clean, no additional noise pollution other than the sound but of course it picks up even airplanes. Overall I cannot recommend this mike and not sure why all the hype honestly. Probably will return too. Just sharing my experience, hope it helps.

I'm very happen with my choice for a microphone for my Nikon Z-50 camera. In my opinion RODE makes very good mics and the dead cat fur cover is an extra added enhancement that is quite beneficial as it solves the issue of wind noise. The price was well within my budget and the quality is superb.

Is this compatible with a Canon Vixia G40?

No it will not work. The videomic go needs plug-in power in order to turn on. That camera doesn't supply the 2.5v necessary. You would use any mic that takes a battery and has a 3.5mm connecting cable. For example, B&H part # ROVMGK will work on the G40.

Hello Alicia, you would need to check with Nikon to find out if the D3400 has a compatible 1/8" TRS microphone input as well as plug-in power available. The Rode VideoMic Go requires power from the source as it is a condenser microphone. If the D3400 does not provide power, but has the audio jack, we recommend a simple upgrade into the Rode VideoMic as it has its own power.
