As always, B&H comes through!! I bought a video camera from B&H about 10 years ago. My battery took a dump. They had a substitute battery that worked great. Already charged & put in the camcorder. I love the camcorder mainly due to its simplicity of using it. Very happy camper as always with this company who I have done business with over 20 years!!

Can this be charged using the camera (Canon AX40,) or do you need a separate charger?

A separate battery charger is recommended such as the Watson Compact AC/DC Charger (B&H # WACCNBP808). The Canon XA40 Camera, and other Canon Pro-camcorders, are compatible with batteries that use Intelligent System to charge the battery through the camera and it's AC adapter.
