The black ATH-M40x Monitor Headphones from Audio Technica are designed for use in studio tracking and mixing and well as for DJ monitoring applications. They feature 40mm Neodymium drivers with copper-clad aluminum voice coils tuned for a flat response. The headphones have a circumaural, around-the-ear design that provides sound isolation in loud environments. The ear cups on the ATH-M40x can be swiveled up to 90 degrees, allowing for single-ear monitoring. The headphones have a detachable single-sided cable system, and both coiled and straight cables are included. When not in use, the ATH-M40x can be folded down and stored in the included carry pouch.

    Audio-Technica ATH-M40X reviews

ATH-M40x Monitor Headphones (Black) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 85.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great headphones. I bought these to replace my 4 year old m50, which had a broken hinge. The m40x is a good replacement and is actually lighter and more comfortable than the m50 in warm environments. It comes with two cables, one coiled and the other straight, and this was a huge upgrade from my old m50's as the straight cable non-detachable cable was prone to tangling. I am not an audiophile but a casual listener, but in my opinion, the sound is just as crisp and flat as the m50. There is some sound leakage, but it is expected for a headphone at this price range and it was not advertised as such. I would definitely recommend these for the casual listener.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent field/studio monitors, mixing I decided to buy these after extensive research of reviews around the web (disregarding anything intended for music listening/casual use). What tipped me over the line was a video review which used a dummy head to compare them side by side with the Sony MDR7506, as well as the ATH-M50x and other similar models. Turns out it offered the flattest and most unaffected sound of the bunch; the Sony sounded awful and tinny, and surprisingly, the M50x's bass was too hyped at the cost of accuracy. Having used them now for mixing and production as well as field interview recording, video work and so on, I can say my experience reflects my expectations (which were high). Incredibly well made, pragmatic sounding headphones.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic sound quality at a great price I purchased these headphones as an upgrade over countless sets of ear buds, after always being disappointed in the poor sound quality. Tried a number of sets at B+H, they have many on display that you can plug into your own devices, and settled on these as the best overall quality for price. A HUGE improvement in sound, hearing new subtleties in songs I've listened to many times before thru ear buds. My only complaints are that in summertime (now) my ears can get too warm; and that after prolonged use my ears do become sore, but I don't attribute that to these headphones in particular, it's always been an issue for me with over ear headphones. Highly Recommended!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great phones! i am a music teacher and DJ. I use these phones for when I record my students, run sound for concerts, and occasionally when I do dances. First off....the sound quality is unbeatable!! Very true flat phones. I have cranked the volume very loud with no distortion and you are able to hear everything! The padding on the cups get a little warm but nothing that can't be ignored. The isolation is great....and did I mention the sound quality! Unbeatable in a headphone at this cost!!! the plastic makes me a little nervous, but it hasn't broke yet (after 9 months of wearing ALOT)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best monitor headphone under 100$ I purchased these headphones to monitor audio tracks for podcasts. They pack easily, have detachable cables (two are supplied), and are very comfortable (a little bit warm for my ears when I use over 2 hours). I purchased these headphones as an upgrade of Bose earbuds. Tried a Sony MDR-7506 at B&H, AT-M40X won. My only complaints are that in summertime my ears can get too warm; and that after prolonged use my ears do become sore, but I don't attribute that to these headphones in particular, it's always been an issue for me with over ear headphones. Highly Recommended!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great But Lacking in design and durability. I loved these headphones with all my soul but the rotation of the cups are a little weird. Mine recently broke when the right cup got stuck and i was the plastic holding it together broke off. I could not believe it because i barely put any force into it. if you pick these up and rotate the cups the wrong way they can break off fairly easily. Im in the process of claiming my warranty but even tho i love the M40x im scared of the fragile design. Im most likely gonna trade my new pair in or sell them to work for a pair of M50x or M70x.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great headphones at a affordable price! As a college student i routinely listen to music, play video games on my computer, and audio edit videos. From the 100+ hours of using this product i can say without a shadow of a doubt that these headphones are worth every penny they cost! These headphones have gone head-to-head with other headphones, costing several times more, and have stood their ground. The only drawback i can think of would be that the headphones will occasionally pick up a small buzzing sound from the impedance of your computer system, which can easily be fixed by a digital-to-analog converter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well made These headphones seem solidly made and are very comfortable to wear. The quality of sound is excellent. However, I'll admit I'm no connoisseur who fusses over minute nuances in sound quality. The devices I'm using them with don't afford an opportunity to put the headphones to a real test. I was very impressed with the ergonomic packaging they shipped in. I've never seen such a carefuly and aesthetically designed packaging, that moreover is easy to use. The headphones came in a real box, not one of those hermetically sealed plastic cases that you have to saw through in order to open. The headphones came with two different types of cords that could easily be switched, and an adapter plug for larger audio jacks.
