Genustech Eclipse ND Fader Filter (52mm, 2 to 8-Stop)
Key Features
  • 0.6 to 2.4 Optical Density
  • Optical Glass Construction
  • Aluminum Filter Ring with Index Markings
  • Greater Control Over Exposure Settings
The 52mm Genustech Eclipse ND Fader Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing an exposure reduction of approximately 2 to 8 stops. The 0.6 to 2.4 optical density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

question

Other than the index, how is this different from rotating one of 2 non-circular polarizing filters to vary the neutral density?
Asked by: Anonymous
You've basically described the construction of your average variable ND. What is different about this specialized filter is that steps have been made to eliminate vignetting (The front 58mm female threads of the filter are larger than the rear 52mm male threads to help minimize vignetting.). This would provide better functionality on wide angle lenses.

This is one we commonly recommend for this price range and it delivers great results. It has been a very popular model since we began carrying it. Its the first I would recommend in this price range.

question

(Genustech)- Does this filter have a front thread so that I can put on a lens cap or lens shade?
Asked by: Anonymous
Genustech produces dedicated lens hoods to use with their fader filters. For the 77mm Eclipse ND Fader Filter, you can use the 82mm size http://bhpho.to/1wXJmkw.The front lens cap thread size is 82mm.

question

Most of my Canon Lenses use 77mm filters but I have a 28-135 zoom that I sometimes use for video and it uses 72mm filters. Can I use a step-up ring with the Genustech 77mm ND filter or will there be vignetting? Thanks
Asked by: Timothy B.
Stepping up reduces vignetting, so I always buy filters that are too big and use step-up rings.

question

Is this a replacement product for Genustech 77mm Solar Eclipse Variable Neutral Density and Circular Polarizer Filter B&H # GEGSE77 MFR # G-SE77? (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1244359-REG/genustech_g_se77_77mm_solar_eclipse_variable.html)
Asked by: Ethan
Hi Ethan, Apologies for the lateness of this answer. It seems it got missed in reporting. The Eclipse ND Fader range came out a few years ago. We have added to this with a Polariser ND Variable Neutral Density and Polariser filter (a two in one solution). This is made up of 3 filters stacked in one housing, and kept as compact as possible. This is a relatively new product for us, and it was called a Solar Eclipse (following our brand product names) but we changed it to Polariser ND because of questions about using this filter to look directly at the sun. We would not recommend you look at the sun directly, ever. Furthermore, pointing your camera lens at the sun also risks damage to the camera. So, The Eclipse ND and the Polarizer ND filters are different. The Eclipse is a variable ND fader, and the Polarizer ND is a variable ND fader and a polarizer.
