Pentax 37962 Overview

  • 1Description

The 1.4x HD PENTAX-DA AF Rear Converter AW from Ricoh is compatible with Pentax KAF2 mount lenses on select DSLR cameras. It mounts between the camera body and lens, and increases the focal length of the lens by 1.4x, while reducing the aperture by 1 f/stop. The minimum focus distance of the lens is preserved, as are auto focus and auto aperture functionality. The rear converter works flawlessly with both the camera-driven AF system and the lens-driven AF system, including that of the SDM and DC-series lenses. The camera's firmware must be updated to the latest version before using the autofocus function.

PENTAX HD Lens Coating
Treated with Pentax's exclusive multi-layer lens coating, which provides high light transmission and low reflectance for sharp, clear images free of flare and ghosting--even under adverse lighting conditions, such as backlighting.
Durable, weather-resistant construction protects the converter and the barrels of compatible, weather-sealed lenses. Shoot worry-free in rainy or misty conditions and when subjected to sprays or splashes.
1.4x Magnification in a Compact Form Factor
Mounts between the camera body and lens and increases lens focal length by 1.4x (40%)--yet has a notably small form factor, measuring only 0.8" and weighing in at just 4.4 oz. This compact size allows you to reach out to distant subjects and capture blur-free shots more easily. Since the minimum focusing distance of the lens is retained, this converter allows you to get just as close as before--but with greater magnification for more detailed images. Keep in mind that when the converter is mounted, the lens's maximum aperture will be smaller by 1 f/stop.
Auto Focus and Aperture Functionality
Auto focus and auto aperture functionality retained when using the converter, which works flawlessly with both the camera-driven AF system and the lens-driven AF system, such as that on the SDM and DC-series lenses. The camera's firmware must be updated to the latest version before using the autofocus function.
Compatible Lenses
The converter is compatible with Pentax KAF2 mount lenses. Autofocus is possible with lenses featuring a maximum aperture of f/4 or faster.
Compatible Cameras

    Pentax 37962 Reviews

1.4x HD PENTAX-DA AF Rear Converter AW for K-Mount Lenses is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 42.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Teleconverter This tc is an amazing lens. I have matched it with the Pentax 300 f4 DA and have been testing it for the last couple of weeks with the K-3. In my informal tests, I cannot see any loss of resolution compared to the the 300 without the tc. I get the same results with my 50-135 and my 200mm DA. The SDM autofocus is fully functional and works fast with the tc attached. The cost in all cases is the losss of one f-stop. Further, I have tested this tc with two Tamron lenses and it functions perfectly (including auto focus) with these lenses, except the SDM reverts to the older screw-drive system. With the 300mm, the focal length becomes 420 which fills a big hole in the Pentax lens lineup. Worth the price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Uncompromising image quality for APS but not so on FF It pairs beautifully with DA* 300/4 both in terms of image quality and autofocus speed, as if the lens and converter were designed as part of the same optical system. Unfortunately this is only true for APS format, on FF it vignettes badly and uncorrectable, where otherwise the lens by itself covers very well the image circle of K-1. The same is true in combination with DFA 100/2.8 macro, except the vignette is correctable and there is some chromatic aberration visible, also correctable. Also it is worth mentioning how unexpectedly well the combo autofocuses. All in all it is not a viable solution for K-1 and future FF bodies, but it works splendidly for APS. Still a 5 star, and I'm hoping for a true FF alternative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from way beyond expectations I have previously used teleconverters, and they have always lacked the sharpness required. However, I took a chance with this one due to the great reviews. Still I was amazed at the sharpness. Almost no sharpness lost and chromatic aberrations not an issue. I have tried with both 300mm and the 60-250mm, works well with both. No noticeable loss of AF speed. It may seem expensive, but because it is so good, this is a reasonable cost to pay for the extra reach. Plus it is very compact and light so won't take up much space in the gadget bag. Yes I would recommend this teleconverter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Now Have a Light Long Lens Have found this teleconverter to produce beautiful results with my Pentax F*300mm lens. Despite the lens' 4.5 minimum focal length, the autofocus works perfectly. The F*300 is known for its high image quality and lovely bokeh and I see no degradation of either with this 1.4x TC. Though I also shoot with a Sigma 150-500mm, the 300/1.4x combo is wonderfully light for a 420mm equivalent (longer when considering the crop camera effect), really handy for handheld shooting or longer hikes. I have also tried it with a lower quality 55-200 zoom and found no difficulties. This TC is well made and speaks highly of Pentax' efforts to provide us with a quality optic that will be carried in the kit and used often on all kinds of lenses. One of my best purchase choices.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great Works well and maintains all lens functions and focus, including fine focus adjustment. Have used with DA*300mm, DA 35mm F2.8 Limited Macro, D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro WR, and DA 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 (even though supposed to be used with lenses max aperture at least F4). Very sturdy but small and light weight. K-5 camera recognizes the adjusted F stops and focal lengths. Image quality appears to maintained as with the lens without the converter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from K3+DA* 300+1.4x HD - A Perfect Combo! I've been using AFA 1.7x with my DA* 300mm lens, pretty happy with the results, but after pairing this converter on K3, oh man, you don't feel it exists, it's simply perfectly extends the 300mm to 420mm lens, without compromising AF speed and image quality, I use this combo mainly for birding and wildlife, I'm thrilled with the results! and super happy with the purchase, especially after BH refunded me to match the correct price, good policy, excellent service!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth Every Penny We most certainly could not afford the $$for the 560mm f5.6, and we already have the 300mm f4 (a sweet lens). So, what could we do to extend our reach? Pentax just released the answer, the 1.4x rear converter. We tested the 1.4x at the annual Sandhill Crane migration in Kearney, Nebraska, using a K-3. It made a huge difference in our ability to capture the shot. Yes, we could have zoomed and cropped using shorter lenses. But my wife and I are firm believers that the best shots are always composed in the camera first. The less digital manipulation, the better. The results with this 1.4x rear converter have absolutely been worth the price. And the loss of one f-stop is highly acceptable, given the ASA capabilities of the Pentax cameras.Be sure you have one of the recommended Pentax cameras before you buy this, as the firmware for older cameras (e.g., K10D, K20D) cannot compensate for this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Flawless Use it mainly for moon shots on the Pentax 60-250mm zoom. Yes it's pricey but for me it was a good compromise between it and the cost and size/weight of another lens. I say flawless as I noticed no loss in image quality from what I can get out of that lens at 250mm and the increased angle of view. I am not including a sample image because the quality of these review samples is so low that you would not be able to judge. Pricey but absolutely worth it.
