Mackie SRM350V3 Overview

Looking for a portable and versatile active speaker for live sound applications? Then look no further than the Mackie SRM350v3 10" Powered PA Loudspeaker System, a powerful PA speaker that includes a 2-channel mixer and integrated DSP, great for small club/band PA systems, singer/songwriters, boardrooms, A/V presentations, classrooms, or as a personal monitor for practice or performance.

The SRM350v3's mixer features two combo XLR-1/4" mic/line/Hi-Z channels with dedicated gain controls. Channel 2 also provides stereo RCA inputs for line-level sources, such as MP3 players, CDs, and other portable devices. An XLR output is provided for daisy-chaining additional speakers. For quick and easy setup, the integrated DSP provides four speaker mode presets (PA Speaker, DJ Speaker, Monitor Speaker, and Solo Speaker). Simply select your application for the best sound. Additionally, the SRM350v3 features a multiband feedback destroyer, that hunts down offending feedback frequencies and applies up to four notch filters to automatically prevent feedback, allowing you to raise the output for your best performance.

The tough, impact-resistant polypropylene enclosure ensure protection from on-the-road wear and tear. The bottom of the cabinet provides a pole cup for mounting on a speaker pole or stand. The angled design allows the speaker to be used as a floor monitor for onstage performance monitoring.

I gave it an extensive test against my QSC K10 looking for a lighter K10 replacement.1) My scales says the the K10 is 32 lbs minus a few ounces and the SRM350v3 is 25 lbs plus a few ounces. So much for the 23 lbs spec in Mackie's docs.2) The SRMv3 blasting Steely Dan as loud as I could stand it might sound a bit better than the K10 (I tried all the equalizations but used the flat or PA setting for both speakers in this test).3) Both speakers have comfortable side handles, but the top handle is pretty uncomfortable on the SRMv3.4) Both speakers worked perfectly off a bottom of the line modified sine wave (probably more correctly a modified square wave :) inverter.5) The SRMv3 gets fairly warm where under the same test the QSC stays pretty close to room temp. The QSC has a fan which in my usage never runs and the SRMv3 does not. For my golf cart battery gigs, the SRMv3 heat is a minus.6) In my practice room the K10 is dead silent where the SRMv3 makes some noises that would make it impractical for me to just leave it turned on all the time as I do with the K10.I think Mackie has a winner with this new speaker and if the K10 were to need replacing I would not bother spending the extra money for the K10 (K10 MAP $, SRM350v3 MAP $). A little investigation reveals that the much maligned Mackie analog (1st gen) Thumps were Tapco designs with a Mackie label. Given the little love for Thumps that was probably a mistake for Mackie. The new digital Thumps sounded pretty good at the local music store.Jon
