The diameter is approximately 2 inch. It is not designed with set screws for the head.

As of the date/time of this reply, no, the Gitzo GT2532 Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod has not been discontinued. Gitzo has not released a press release concerning a replacement to the above tripod.

Would this work with Manfrotto 054 Magnesium Ball Head (with Q2 Quick Release)? I used 054 with Manfrotto 190XPROB, they fit well. And would like to know if 054 fits Gitzo GT2532 Mtnr Series2
The Gitzo GT2532 Mountaineer CF tripod has a reversible 3/8 & 1/4 threaded post for attaching most any ball head or three-way head. I have used several different tripod heads on my GT2532, depending on the need at the time. If the legs are the right size for your use, this is an excellent choice.
