Gitzo Mountaineer GT2542 Overview

The GT2542 Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Gitzo features Carbon eXact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The GT2542 has a load capacity of 48.5 lb, extends to a maximum height of 65.7", and folds down to 22" for transport.

The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 5.9". Its four-section legs are secured with twist locks that incorporate G-lock Ultra, which has an internal O-ring to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity, and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg angles. A ballast hook on the center column allows you to add weight to increase the tripod's stability.

Gitzo Mountaineer GT2542 Reviews

Everything I wanted is in the Gitzo GT2542 Series 2

I have been using an ancient Gitzo 1228 MK2 tripod for what over twenty years, but I had just worn it out and I needed something new, so I had learned that the Gitzo GT2542 Series 2 was the successor to the Gitzo 1228. I had looked at the Gitzo GT2542 in a store a couple of years ago and thought it would be a good replacement when that time came. So using the Gitzo 1228 as a frame of reference I will base my review. The Gitzo GT2542 weighs a bit more and is a bit longer, but I did not seem to notice the weight and appreciated the extra height when the legs were fully extended. In the Gitzo GT2542 an o-ring has been added to each extended segment to try to keep out dust, dirt, and sand which is a big plus for me as I was always having sand get into the threads of the leg and it took some time to clear that out for each leg. In an update on the design the threads on each leg have changed to a uniform one among other updates, which is useful as with the 1228 it seemed more problematic in tightening and loosening the leg locks at times, but it is child's play now. The legs seem to extend out and back much easier too. Another big plus is a spring the top of the legs that allows them to click back to the width after you have adjusted legs to spread out into a more standard tripod stance. That is very useful as I like to make quick work of switching back to a normal tripod leg stance when moving onto a new subject after being low to the ground on the previous subject. The legs are easily adjustable to meet whatever the need is--low to the ground or to adjust the legs individually for steep or unusual angles. The equipment weight rating on the GT2542 is 18 kg (39.68 lbs), which is a lot more than than that of the Gitzo 1228 MK2 (about 8 kg or 17.6 pounds) , so it will support the weight for those heavier cameras and larger lenses. The center column can be removed with a couple of twists as that was built into the updated design, which is useful when you want to get low to the ground to photography those subjects on the ground e.g. wildflowers. I had removed the center column on the 1228, but it required another center column (which was purchased from a third party) that was minimal to allow the behavior that is standard with the GT2542, but now the center column is gone in 2 seconds. A wonderful addition to the design. I recently used the Gitzo GT2542 on a trip to Yellowstone National Park and I have to say it did NOT disappoint. I was often fighting the twist locks to release and lock the legs on the 1228, but now all those issues have gone away with the updated design on the leg locks. And in general everything just worked better than before and was a noticeable upgrade that makes working out in the field a simpler task. It is an excellent update of what I had seen earlier (in the 1228) and much more and look forward using the tripod for many years to come.
