Is there a difference in speed if I format it specifically for mac? I can do both right? Part of the drive only readable for mac and part of it can be configured to work with windows?
No, there would be no difference in speed. If you want you can partition the drive. You can pull up the settings of the drive in Disk utility on a Mac.

That sounds slow for this drive. I use them regularly to offload and ship media on.
Try to reformat the drive.

Yes, it will work if you format the drive, however, since the contents of the drive will be deleted when you format the drive, you will need to re-download the software from the Lacie website.
