Celestron NexStar Evolution overview

  • 1Description

The NexStar Evolution 8 203mm Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope from Celestron is a powerful, portable, versatile, and user-friendly telescope that can be used for observing everything from the Moon and planets to deep-sky objects like galaxies and nebulae. Using Celestron's proprietary StarBright XLT multi-coating system, light transmission is increased throughout the entire optical path with anti-reflection multi-coated lenses, highly reflective multi-coated mirrors, and four-element rare-earth glass. While the focal ratio is a slow f/10, the scope's precision tracking system allows it to be a competent astrophotography/astroimaging platform for the Moon and planets.

The Evolution comes with two ways to use and control it. The first is to simply download Celestron's free Navigator app for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. The scope's WiFi provides the connection to the app and expands the capabilities and functionality, including an expanded database of over 120,000 objects with detailed information on more than 200 of those objects. Second is the iconic 2-line 16-character NexStar computer controller. This is a wired piece of hardware with a database of over 40,000 celestial objects plus several astronomical catalogs including the Messier and Caldwell. Whether using the controller or mobile device, the system can assist in properly aligning the scope, provide tours of the objects and events visible whenever and wherever you're viewing, and allow for manual direction and slew control.

Designed for portability, the Evolution features a long-life lithium-iron phosphate battery providing up to 10 hours of continual use on a single charge. The scope comes with an AC power supply with plugs for the US, EU, UK, and AU outlets. The battery powers the servo motors, auxiliary accessory ports, a USB charging port, and the built-in WiFi. Manual clutches in both altitude and azimuth enable you to manually move and point the telescope when it's powered off.

    Celestron NexStar Evolution reviews

    NexStar Evolution 8 203mm f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain GoTo Telescope is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful instrument! I love the design of this 'scope. The mount is solid and functional and works beautifully (so far as I can tell) right out of the box. Unfortunately I haven't yet had much chance for observing due to the exceptionally thick marine layer in the foggy Bay Area. On my way out tonight to get first light, and I'm very excited. Exterior packaging was slightly damaged on arrival, but nothing that affected the contents. One minor complaint, the StarPointer finder scope arrived with a dead battery because it was packaged in the on position. One six-dollar trip to Walgreens and I was back in business, but that seems like a thing that could be avoided and the only reason my review isn't 5 stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Instrument I've had other telescopes but this is the first serious scope and I love it. Came very well packed and quick shipping. Pretty easy to set up even though very minimal instructions are provided. The mount is solid, have used it a couple times for astrophotography with my DSLR and it's worked great. The goto mount can have a little learning curve to get aligned, but once you do it a couple times, it's quick and the goto is pretty accurate. The integrated battery that is suppose to last 10 hours was a selling feature for me but I've since had reservations. The battery signaled a fault the first time I charged it and only lasted about 2 hours. It appears that this is NOT a user replaceable item. Celestron support was helpful but have had to send it in for repair of whatever is wrong. Even with that, really looking forward to getting the mount back and using it more, great optics.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good one it is The telescope met my expectations, a good one it is. It came with useful features like the self-contained battery; now I no longer have to make use of my external power pack. The mount was well constructed compensating the eyepiece holders and the red light. I had a hard time reading the manual because it was already evening. I later discovered that the scope and alignment of the telescope are nice and steady if set up the right way. Although setting it up is easy nothing too complicated or difficult to do. Sure! It is well designed for portability, and the iPad app is fantastic. Thank you for that!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great piece of technology I own a few different OTA's and mounts. The Evo 8 is the one I usually pick when I want a no hassle quick set up for viewing. Let's face it, if a scope is difficult and frustrating to set up your going to lean towards the easier one every time. The technology packed into the Nexstar Evoloution 8 just blows my mind. The SkyPortal app seamlessly works with the mount in a very smart way. You can easily explore the night sky in one evening by just clicking on the apps touch screen and the mount will slew and lock on. Then if you want, most objects have audio explanation that you can listen to. The mount is very portable and is electrically self-contained with built in battery that lasts a good 10 hours. Celestron even thought to put a USB power receptacle so you can power your WiFi device if needed off the built in battery. They even included an adjustable red LED light that's mounted in the mount arm to light up your upper eyepiece tray. WiFi Communication between your I device and the mount gives you complete wireless control. Celestron also includes a wired hand controller, if you choose to use it. The only reason I would use the wired hand controller would be as a backup to the WiFi. Also, another nice feature of the mount are the alt and azimuth clutches. Just unlock and move in either axis and re lock. I foresee this technology being used on more Celestron mounts in the future. It's pretty darn awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I purchased the Celestron Evolution 8 as part of my downsizing from larger telescopes. Lugging the large scopes around is too much for me. This is the first GoTo telescope that I have owned and did not know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised, this scope and mount is fantastic. Setup is fast and accurate. My first time out only took me 10 minutes to get up and running. It has it's own WiFi that links with an iPhone, iPad or Android. It also has a handpad that can be used if you don't have a phone or tablet. Using the WiFi is so simple a child can learn it quickly. Just set the scope up, link to the WiFi, line up the scope on any 3 brights stars, and bingo your're ready to go. Just pick any object that you want to view, hit GoTo, and the scope slews to it. The mount even has it's own built in battery so there's no carrying around a power pack. The tripod is solid with no shake, and the mount is constructed metal, no plastic. All the drive gears are also metal. The 8 SCT telescope is very bright and sharp, giving beautiful views of the planets and the Moon. I have owned many scopes and for me this scope is a winner. For those that are unfamiliar with the night sky this scope allows you the view thousand of object easily. This scope has been well engineered and thought out. A pleasure to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to align The scope is very easy to align. It also tracks nicely over long periods of time. Setup is fairly easy for a scope this size. The battery lasts reasonably long. The handheld controller is very intuitive. The wi-fi function is a little trickier to use, but not bad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent all round performance Had this for 1 year now. This scope has surprised me as to its quality, ease of use, transportablity and performance. Set up is well thought out, with both the tri-pod and mount being of sturdy construction and intuitive to use. Optics are fantastic, I am running a 2 inch visual back and explore scientific 2 inch lens. I use the sky portal app and iphone for the control. All works as it should. Blenheim, New Zealand

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Scope I've had this scope for a couple of weeks, and it is awesome. I have an 8 DOB, and was looking for something with similar aperture, but with GOTO and tracking capability. Customer service from B&H was great. I received my scope on-time and in great condition. The packaging for the scope is excellent, as well. Setup is very easy and takes me about 15 minutes. The bubble level in the tripod makes leveling very easy, and the SkyAlign feature has worked every time. Once aligned, the scope has no problem finding and tracking objects. I'm amazed at how accurate it is, and how quickly I can find objects in the sky. The optics in the scope are very good. I've seen excellent views of Jupiter, galaxies, and nebulae. The focal length is longer than my previous scope, so magnification for each eyepiece I own is higher with this scope. I've found for deep space objects, my 2 36mm eyepiece offers a great view. To use 2 eyepieces requires the purchase of a different diagonal, however, as the scope includes a 1.25 diagonal only. The mount is quite sturdy, and when used in grass or with vibration suppression pads I see very little shake in the image. However, there's definitely movement on a hard surface without the pads. I really like that the battery is included in the mount - it's a very convenient feature. I've tried the WiFi using Celestron's SkyPortal app. It definitely has lag issues when in an area with a lot of WiFi, which makes it difficult to align the scope. It seemed a lot better when I was at a dark site without a lot of interference. It's a cool feature, but I prefer using the supplied controller. For me, it's easier to control the scope while looking in the eyepiece because I can feel the buttons. Obviously, that's a lot harder to do on a smartphone or tablet. All in all, I've been very happy with the scope. Set up is easy, optics are great, and it has allowed me to see much more in each night of observing. Very happy with it, and expect it will serve me well for years.
