ProMediaGear Katana Overview

The Katana Professional Gimbal Tripod Head from ProMediaGear is capable of supporting up to 150 lb of equipment and provides smooth movement and stable support for even the longest telephoto lenses. An Arca-Swiss type clamp mount enables the attachment of a compatible plate to the head. Separate locking and adjustment mechanisms allow friction adjustment without instability or parts coming apart. Camera and lens positions can be adjusted smoothly with one hand and a balanced position maintained without tightening. 

The Katana is made of hard anodized, scratch-resistant 6061 aluminum alloy and CNC precision machined parts. Maintenance free, weather-sealed ball bearings enable the head's smooth movements and over-sized knobs can be removed and repositioned for more comfortable adjustments.

Best Gimbal I ever owned. Works perfect right out of the box. Also a great looking design. Love the grip.I also was using a 3 way panning grip and this is so much easier to use. Do see my images of birds that I photographed. I could not have done without it.

Not worth the premium price

I was expecting something very premium for the price at the very top of the gimbal head selection. And while it performs fine like most other gimbals with smooth movements and locking knobs, the overall product does not seem to be worth the high cost. On my copy, the attached photograph shows an example of what it looked like, right out of the box. The parts seem cast then machined, and there are plenty of places where the machining doesn't reach the bad casting marks. Also, scratches and scrapes abound. Surprised it got through quality control. The specs on the website have a capacity of 50 pounds, but the included one-page color-copied instruction sheet shows a capacity of 150 pounds. The website indicates the knobs are removable and reversible. There are no instructions about how to do so, it looks like you have to disassemble quite a lot to reverse them. And if you do, only one of them will be usable because the other ones if reversed will not be grip-able due to the clearance with other parts. Also worth noting the knobs are not captive so if they're loose and fall out in the field, the head becomes useless until a replacement can be acquired. There are threaded sockets at various places for an unknown reason. Are you meant to attach equipment to the side? It doesn't seem logical and it looks like they just threaded the holes because someone thought it would look cool. The head comes with a 6-inch plate which seems standard but perhaps they could have included the longer one they offer for more adjustment ability. There is no case. It comes in a cardboard box with no padding. The two main parts are inside of cheap fabric baggies. I thought they could have at least included a foam insert or padded bags. The look is hard to appreciate in person. I understand the drilled holes for weight reduction. But the whole thing seems like it wasn't very well thought-out and they just stopped refining way too early in the design process. This gimbal was touted as being one with the most features but it doesn't seem to have anything going for it over the ones that cost a third of the price.

can I shoot portrait position as well as landscape with this head?

Yes and No... If you are using a lens with a lens foot, typically the lens collar allows you to rotate around the lens, then YES. You would be able to quickly roll the camera over from landscape to portrait. However, if you are using a shorter lens or a lens that doesn't feature a rotation lens collar, then NO. If no, ProMediaGear manufactures the PXC2 Lens Plate that will clamp onto your Arca Compatible tripod plate mounted on to the camera body rather than the lens. To rotate to portraits with this configuration you would require an L-bracket.

Does this Katana head have a screw in the bottom so that I can attach it to my Gitzo series 5 tripod? If any adapter is needed what would it be?

This will work with any regular tripod. Both the Gitzo Series 5 and the Katana use 3/8"-16; the tripod will have the male threads and the gimbal will have the receiving mount.
