Rode IXY-L overview

  • 1Description

The lightning connector version of the RØDE iXY Stereo Microphone is designed for portable audio recording applications using a Lightning connector iOS device (e.g. iPhone 5/s/c). It can be used for recording music, interviews, sound design, film-making, and more. The device features a metal housing to help reduce electromagnetic interference around two condenser microphone elements positioned in an XY configuration and an integrated iClamp for securing the microphone to your mobile device. The unit can records at up to 24-bit 96 kHz resolution using the RØDE Rec App, available from the Apple iTunes App store. A 72 Hz high pass filter can be engaged in software to reduce unwanted low frequency noise.

    Rode IXY-L reviews

iXY Stereo Microphone (Lightning Connector) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Awesome He answer to a customers question about recording, you must use the Rode Rec LE app to make incredibly fantastic recording. Whether it's a live show or recording ambient sounds or specific field recordings for use with samplers in music applications or add a Lav Mic and use it for recording interviews along with a camcorder mic and syncing them up in post. All around a fantastic stereo mic recording anywhere from 44.1kHz to 96kHz. Some many uses, too many to go into. Buy it and I'm sure you'll be very happy you did. I know that I am and I've been recording since 1967, so I've got a bit of experience. Enjoy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wasn't expecting it to be so good As a Sound Designer ( TV and Movies ) I always wanted good mic I can have with me all the time, I have the H6 zoom and it's extraordinary but it is too big to carry with me all the time I use to have the NT4 that was a great microphone but also to big to carry with me all the time, so I decided to give the ixy a test and I'm surprised how close it is to the NT 4 and pretty similar XY mic on the Zoom . I also like the fact that you can send the files to dropbox it's a bit slow but very convenient, also I like the fact that you can name things before after you Record on your phone so later or you can find things easier. The case that came with is great as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mic I've needed an iOS mic for a while but held off to let the market settle. After comparing models - I chose the Rode for it's brand reputation and for overwhelmingly positive reviews, plus I am a big fan of the NT2. I'm not disappointed with the iXY. High marks for it's integration and quality. It does the job well and worth the investment. It would have been nice had the software been included. Bonus points to B&H for throwing in the IK Grip as part of the package.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can modify for iPhone with new touch home button I have an iPhone 7 Plus. I wasn't really thinking about the home button change when I bought it. The new button design requires skin contact and is not a true button as most of you well know. What I did was take the number 2 mount that fit perfectly with my iPhone leather case and cut and ground away the button from the mount. I wasn't sure if that would compromise the integrity of the mounting clamp but doesn't seem to. So, whatever clamp fits your configuration, you can modify that clamp. I used a hobby knife and a small rotary tool. I was thinking I could just cut but hard plastic under rubber so out came the grinding wheel. I've attached a picture, the mod doesn't look that clean but can't tell unless you look very close. Can't tell at all on the phoneI may finish it off some but don't want to remove too much material. Just thought I'd pass this on. I imagine Rode will develop a version for the new phones, hopefully with an audio jack, but I got a great deal on this so fine for now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very handy, and quite good Having gotten a new iPhone 6 Plus, I looked around for an alternative to my Sony PCM-M10, and settled on the iXY with the Lightning connector. I also got a Shoulderpod S1 tripod mount kit and a Pedco UltraPod II tripod. All this fits nicely into my computer bag, so I'm ready to record anytime. On the pro side: The mic picks up everything very clearly. There's perhaps a bit more electronic background hiss than with the PCM-M10, but for something that attaches to an iPhone it's really remarkably good. The Rde Rec IOS app is very straightforward, though I haven't tried any of its effects or editing. The only con was in how to attach it to an iPhone that has a protective cover. The cover I already had was too thick, and when I tried some thinner ones, the Lightning connector wouldn't align, because with many protectors the amount of material on the top side is not equal to what's on the bottom side. So I ended up purchasing a cheap, simple one, and used an Exacto knife to cut away just enough material so that the iXY would slide onto the phone itself. This has worked out just fine so far. One other slight con, at least for me, is that exporting large audio files is rather slow compared to what I'm used to with the PCM-M10, where I record onto a mini-SD card, and then pull the card out of the device and put it into a high-speed USB3 SD card reader connected to my laptop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love It!! Most issues revolve around people having trouble connecting the mic to their phone. I wanted to touch on that. I don't use the supplied grip, and the mic seats fine for my purposes. With the grip on, it does require a little wiggle and what not...perhaps a disconnect and reconnect, but it really isn't an issue. Once in place, recording through the app, the audio quality is phenomenal. I am very pleased! I highly recommend this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from AssistiveTouch Most of the reviews of this mic are fair. I just wanted to chime in about the "button issue" that people are mentioning on iPhone 7 and newer. You can get around it with an accessibility setting called assistive touch on your iPhone. There is no need to cut the mount on your mic. Go to Settings>General>Accessibility>AssistiveTouch. Turn it on. A virtual button will spear on your screen that functions just like the home button. You can move it anywhere on the screen, so orientation shouldn't matter, and you can turn it off when you aren't using the mic. I discovered this on one of my old phones when the home button stopped working. I recently started using it on my iPhone 8 after I upgraded from the 6. I hope that helps.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Iphone 7 - no home button I haven't even got a chance to use it yet because i received it last night and have been performing open heart surgery on it this morning. There is just no way to press the home button on iphone 7 with any of the mounts and since you hold the phone upside down with this mic and apple put the lock button in a really stupid spot - on the side - i keep locking by accident and then there is no way to unlock it without removing the mic first. So this morning i fitted all of the mounts to find a snug one and then had the cut the mounts home button off with an exacto. Now its hard to even get my finger in there to press it. If you are sporting sausages for fingers, forget about it. You will need a stylus or something to press it. Kind of disappointed to be honest. My first rode mic - i was pretty excited for it and not so impressed this far. Hopefully the quality is worth the aggravation because its appealing to bale able to keep a decent recording mic in your pocket. I figured i would point this out in case people aren't willing to put up with this. Better to know before you own it.
