Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine DS Overview

  • 1Description

Utilizing a multi-layer coating process for consistent color rendition from lens to lens the Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens answers the challenge of assembling a set of lenses over time. The lens comes in Micro Four Thirds Mount and it features industry standard geared focus and iris rings that share common position with other Rokinon Cine DS lenses. To aid focus pullers who have to work both sides of the lens, the aperture and focus scales are marked on both sides of the lens.

This 85mm lens produces a 14.4° angle-of-view when used with Micro Four Thirds sensor cameras. Hybrid aspherical lenses render sharply defined images with a minimum of distortion and chromatic aberrations, with a minimum focus distance of 3'6" from the lens. A removable lens hood provides flare protection when shooting without a matte box and the lens's threaded front accepts 72mm filter rings.

Ultra Multi Coated lenses minimize flare and ghosting, and the lenses are color matched to a standard eliminating the need to acquire an entire set of lenses at the same time.
Industry-standard gearing for focus and aperture rings. Each lens in the Rokinon DS series share common focus and iris gear ring positions, which speeds up lens changes as accessories such as follow focus units or iris motors don't have to be re-positioned.
"Declicked" aperture ring for smooth iris pulls.
A removable lens hood provides flare protection without a matte box.
The lens opens up to T1.5, providing the capability for low light shooting or creating extremely shallow depth of field.

Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine DS Reviews

85mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens for Micro Four Thirds Mount is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 59.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well with A7s I've only had it on a couple of outings so far but I've been impressed the performance. The image is sharp and works well for video. On the Sony A7s - it's a good size and weight - not too large or heavy to overwhelm the camera if you're going handheld. Not that I'd recommend going handheld in that configuration - the least little jitter does show up. Using a monopod or a light tripod gets much better results. It also allows a one man band to focus and adjust the de-clicked aperture simultaneously. So, although all manual - it's a pleasure to use and it yields good results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE THIS LENS I've always used Canon gear as rental but this lens is incredible for the price, it really has a very good quality. I'm planning on buying the 12mm nano coated and the 35mm, and the thing about the DS line is that all lenses are coated so that each have the same color. Another thing I like about the DS line is that the aperture and focus rings are the same distance from the camera housing for every lens so I don't have to readjust the follow focus or matte box because the gears are in the exact same place.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Quality Lens - Not great focal length for Cinema This is a 5 star lens in terms of image quality, and build. I own all of the Cine DS line of lenses for my a7s, and I got the 85 to add to my lineup. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to the specs and the 3.5 feet focus distance. Unfortunately I was excited to use the 85 to get even better details and close up detail than the 50mm I use, but since I can't focus that close, it's not really possible. I'm returning the lens, and keeping my others, but it's still a great lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Possibly the best value in 85mm lenses Rokinon/Samyang really make excellent lenses for the money. In many cases I think they hit the best price-to-performance mark of any lenses out there. I needed a new 85mm to replace my aging Nikkor Ai-S 85mm and this Rokinon outperforms all of Nikkor's offerings until you get to the over $1,000 price point. Super sharp all the way out to the edges, nearly zero barrel distortion or chromatic aberration, and surprisingly good sharpness and saturation when wide open - although as with any lens there still is some softening here. For portraits or video work, I can't help but think this lens right here, at this super affordable price, might just be the best lens value there is for professional work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value lens/Super tight framing I'm using this for digital filming. Pros The picture quality coming off the lens is pristine for such a value. The build is great. Looking good in Low-light. Cons The crop on the that MFT sensor is super duper tight. I can live with it, but the frame is SUPER tight. I wasn't expecting that much of a crop. I'm some what of a novice when it comes to distance, frame size, and focal length. You have to learn some how and I guess I'm learning now. That's my only warning. I'm curious to see the framing from a 85mm with the EF mount on a MFT using a turbo adapter. Thinking I may have made out better with that combination. Nevertheless, I'll make it happen and work with this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice fast cine lens at a bargain price I am currently using this lens with a NEX-5N; on this APS-C camera the lens has an equivalent 35mm focal length of 127.5mm. It can also be used on a full frame E-mount camera; mounting this lens on the A7 series for video is a popular use of it, and one I hope to test in the future. I use it both for video and for portraits. The lens feels solid. Focusing and aperture control are both smooth. The aperture control is clickless for video use, but the lens also works well for still photography. This is a completely manual lens with no electronic connections. You must set the aperture on the lens; the camera is unable to control it, so automatic modes that require aperture control will not work. You can still use automatic shutter speed, and auto ISO on some cameras. You also lose the automatic correction for lens distortion that the Sony cameras have for their own lenses, but that is not a major problem as the distortion levels of this lens are low. Wide open the lens produces lovely round bokeh, as the iris is completely retracted. Stopped down the shape of the 8 blade iris can be seen; still decent, but not as nice as more expensive cine lenses that use more blades. Sharpness is good wide open and improves somewhat stopped down to T4. Depth of field is very limited at T1.5 as you would expect, so careful focusing is essential. No, this lens isn't going to match the image quality of a Zeiss cine lens. But it also doesn't cost thousands of dollars. It delivers the good qualities of a fast 85mm lens - shallow depth of field, good bokeh, and low light capability - at a price that makes it possible for many more people to own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect starter cine lens i use this for small scale indie filming with a sony A7SII and a metabones mark IV adapter.in terms of overall quality, this is definitely a cheap professional lens, not an amateur lens.it's well built, it renders a very sharp picture, and it doesn't break the bank. is it the most perfect, most gorgeous lens ever? no, of course not. the focus breathes a little bit as you rack it, the focus and aperture rings aren't quite as tight as you might want them, the lens cap is fine but not really perfectly grippy... but it's more than good enough, it's flat out good. it would still be a deal at twice the price.until you can justify spending $$on a prime, this is a great way to go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens for Cinematography I use this lens to shoot various projects including weddings and independent films. The image quality and clarity are fantastic and the manual focus is extremely smooth. The de-clicked aperture is great because it can be extremely fast and you are able to expose during recording, although I would stay away from that unless absolutely necessary. It is a little bulky, especially with a lens hood. Switching out lenses make take slightly longer and storing it in a bag may prove a little more difficult then with some other lenses. But it's definitely worth it.

    question

I've heard using full frame lenses on m4/3 sensors can result in an unsharp image. I know the I know there are versions of this lens that are full frame... but has this been made specifically for m4/3 (GH4)?
    Asked by: Anonymous
Full frame camera lenses, with the appropriate adapters, work perfectly on MFT sensor cameras. In this case Samyang, the maker of Rokinon lenses, makes basic lenses that are assembled into bodies meant for any number of particular lens mounts. Since these basic lenses they use cover full frame, they easily cover MFT. In any event, for all intents and purposes this can be considered a lens built for MFT camera's such as the GH4.

Does the Black magic pocket 4k work with this?
    Asked by: ryder
No, it initially uses Micro 4/3 lenses because it is a 4/3 sensor. But if you purchase an EF mount adapter it will work. so Get a Micro 4/3 to EF Mount

    question

is it worth getting this version of the m43 Rokinon 85mm t1.5 over the cheaper one ( Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine AS IF UMC Lens )? Is there a noticeable improvement in image quality? (I would need this for both video and stills head & shoulders portraits)..thanks for any feedback
    Asked by: Justin
Side by side, I would think that the image quality would be about the same. The more expensive DS or Dual Side lens line has features that come into play when you have a set of them. You get the Dual Side focus markings, unified aperture and focus gear ring distance, (simplifying lens changes) and color matching. If you do not intend to get a DS set and plan more casual use, then save some money and get the less expensive one. If you plan more intensive video use then spend the money, get a set of DS lenses and enjoy the benefits.

    Asked by: ken
There is not, but that is because this is a Cinema Style Lens which is fully manual for focus. It does not have any auto focus capability.
