Is there a specific reason this wouldn’t work on any lens with 72mm filter threads? It says proprietary but is it and why?
The Sigma AML72-01 Close-Up Lens will fit on any lens that has a 72mm filter thread. However, it was only optically designed for the 18-300mm lens and only for the 80-300mm range.

question
Will this work with sigma 70-200?
It is difficult to answer unless you try it on 70-200. Sigma markets it specific for 18-300 which is an APS-C lens. 70-200 should be a full frame lens so there is a difference between the image circles of both lenses.

question
Will this affect picture quality if I attach it to the sigma 18-300 all the time ?
You should use it only when trying to shoot macro. Otherwise AF will not work properly.
