Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Offering a wide angle of view for full frame cameras, the Sony A mount Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di USD Lens is a fast wide-angle zoom lens . The f/2.8 maximum aperture performs well in low-light situations, and provides a shallow depth of field for selective focus. XGM and LD glass elements reduce chromatic aberrations and help ensure sharp and clear imagery. eBAND and BBAR coatings render uniform colors and reduce ghosting and flare, while a fluorine coating on the front element helps repel water or contaminants.

A USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) autofocus motor provides quick and precise focusing performance, with high torque, low response times, and quiet operation to benefit both still and video applications. Additionally, a full-time manual focus mechanism enables manual fine-tuning of focus at any point, even when the AF system is engaged.

Image Quality
Comprised of 18 elements in 13 groups, including an XGM (eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical) element placed at the front group and several LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements in the system, aberrations such as geometrical distortion and lateral color are efficiently compensated for, enabling the zoom lens to deliver quality imagery throughout the entire range from corner to corner.
BBAR and eBAND Coatings
BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coating renders uniformity in transmissivity across the critical bandwidths. Coupled with the eBAND coating, ghosting and flare typically observed on ultra wide-angle lenses are efficiently eliminated, resulting in sharper and clearer images.
Ultrasonic Motor
USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) Motor is the power for a fast and quiet autofocus drive that works in harmony with the continuous manual focus mechanism.
XGM and LD Glass Elements
An eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical element and Low Dispersion elements in the front group minimize chromatic aberrations and help ensure clear and sharp imagery.
Lens Hood
A built-in lens hood helps block out unwanted light, preventing lens flare, as well as protecting the lens's front element.
A rounded 9-blade diaphragm produces an aesthetic out-of-focus quality that is especially beneficial when working with selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.
SILKYPIX Developer Studio for Tamron
The SILKYPIX software provides allows you to generate quality images from RAW data, while performing adjustments to reflect your personal style. These include white balance, color, sharpness, and the tonal curves recorded by digital cameras. The SILKYPIX Developer Studio for Tamron provides a range of functions, in addition to the basic adjustment capabilities, such as correcting aberrations (lateral color, distortion, relative illumination fall-off) referring to the optical design data.

    Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 reviews

SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di USD Lens for Sony A is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tamron convert. I'm a diehard Sony A-mount user(A99) and I'm still awaiting the latest(if any) DSLR camera from Sony. Most of my lenses are Carl Zeiss or Sony G lenses. I recently purchased the Tamron 15-30mm and was blown away by the quality of the photos. No compromises on this product as far as quality, quiteness and build. The photos are sharp wide open but I much preferred stopping down. However at the recent NY Auto show at Javits no flash was needed as this beauty performed awesomely under the available light given. Note to A-mount users this version of the lens has no image stabilization since some Sony Fullframe cameras have steady shot built in. Good job Tamron as I'll be giving you second looks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very good wide zoom lens On my A99II: 1)At the wide end, my Sony 16-35/2.8 is a little better at the frame edge compared to the Tamron 15-30/2.8. However, when set to 30mm, the Tamron is noticeably better than the Sony. The Tamron seems has a more even performance over the whole zoom range compared to the Sony. 2)Compare to my Sigma 12-24 HSM II, Tamron is sharper when stop down to the same f stop. The negative side of the Tamron is the large size. This lens also works with my A7RII+LAEA3, but it is front heavy due to the large size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, full-frame ultra-wide angle zoom I purchased this lens because it is a fast (F2.8), ultra-wide angle zoom for full frame cameras (Sony A99, in my case). I have used it off and on for about a month. I like its low light capability (I always seem to end up in low light situations!), and its very wide field of view. The ultrasonic focusing is quick and quiet, and I have not noticed any tendency to hunt for focus, though I would imagine, as for any lens, this could happen in very dark situations. It is a bit heavy, which is not surprising for this fast a lens. The lens hood is built in, and because of the huge convex front element, It does not have the ability to accept filters, so no polarizers. Apart from these minor issues, I feel it is a great lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best! Wow! What an awesome lens. I use this for my real estate listings. Very sharp on my Sony A99II. I couldn't be happier. Only obvious downsides are weight (doesn't bother me) and lack of simplified filters. Excellent build quality and a joy to sit back and stare at. B&H was fantastic as always.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a wonderful wide angle lens This is a wonderful wide angle lens. You will need a converter to use it on Sony E-mount cameras, which I did and worked well

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy it, stop thinking about it and get one. One of the best lens you can get for an a mount , a99ii is my camera and this lens is tack sharp wide open, use it for landscape and other work, thanks Tamron for Filing the need of A mount users. Its a big lens and heavy if your hauling it around all day long but well worth the asking price. Quality of images and color is 100% , I got some nisi filters and a holder for this lens and I am very happy with the results.
