Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

The 12mm f/2.8 ED AS IF NCS UMC Fisheye Lens for Canon EF Mount from Rokinon provides a 180° diagonal angle of view on full-frame cameras for an ultra-wide angle, distorted perspective that is useful for architectural interiors, landscapes and creative experimentation in any photographic application. The f/2.8 maximum aperture is effective in low light situations and enables some measure of shallow depth of field control.

The lens' sophisticated optical design consists of 12 lens elements arranged in 8 groups including three elements made of low dispersion ED glass and two aspherical lens elements to minimize coma and chromatic aberrations. Highly effective nanocrystal anti-reflection (NCS) coating applied together with UMC coatings improve light transmission and reduce ghosting. Its internal focus system enables its compact design and keeps the front element from extending during focus.

As a manual focus, manual aperture lens, it offers a wide, easy to grip focus ring and bright aperture, distance and depth of field markings. A removable petal-shaped lens hood is included.

An ultra wide-angle fisheye lens with a 12mm focal length on full-frame cameras and a 19.2mm equivalency when used on APS-C format cameras. Its distorted perspective is useful for interiors, landscapes, group shots and many creative wide-angle applications.
Extra low dispersion and aspherical lens elements reduce aberrations for sharp, color-accurate imaging.
Nano crystal coating and ultra multi-coating on the lens elements improves light transmission and reduces ghosting and flare.
Manual focus lens with an internal focus system and wide, rubberized focus ring.
Manual aperture control with bright markings for aperture, distance and depth of field.
Sturdy metal barrel with removable petal-shaped lens hood.

    Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 reviews

12mm f/2.8 ED AS IF NCS UMC Fisheye Lens for Canon EF Mount is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Go wide or go home This is an amazing lens for not much money. Wide, fast, and sharp - what's not to love? I use it for landscape and night sky photography, and it's rapidly becoming my go-to lens for these. Sharp edge-to-edge, with good contrast and very, very little vignetting. Yeah, it's aperture is set manually, but my Canon 1d and 5d automatically adjust the shutter speed if I have them in aperture priority exposure mode, so that's not much of a handicap. It's also manually focused, but a 12mm fisheye? Seriously, how much focusing do you really think there is to do? It feels solid and well-built. In short, there's not really anything I can find fault with on this lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 Fisheye Lens Canon EF Mount I'm going to be using this lens primarily for landscapes, cityscapes and some astro photography. This lens has an incredibly wide field of view, with excellent image quality. I'm using this lens with a canon 5d III and I've included some unedited examples on how sharp the edges are! The only thing that is hard to get accustomed to with this lens setting the aperture manually. You can basically leave the focus close to the infinity marker all the time unless you are shooting very close up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better the second time around As someone who generally sticks to OEM lenses, I was a bit hesitant when buying this lens. The first copy of the lens I received was soft on the left side, reinforcing my prejudice against cheaper 3rd party lenses. I packed up the lens, intending to send it back to B&H for a refund, but at the last minute decided to exchange ir for another copy instead. That turned out to be a very smart move. B&H responded almost instantly and got a second lens to me within a week. The second copy is tack sharp all around. The build quality seems to be very good, the drag on the focus ring is spot on and the aperture ring snaps crisply into place. If Rokinon offered this lens with a chip I would give it five stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Fisheye! The very first shots I made on my Canon 5Diii and 70D, I knew I had made the perfect choice for this lens. Yes, it's totally manualfocus and aperture, but then I pretty much shoot in manual mode 99% of the time. Images are sharp and delivers the wide angle I expected. Barrel distortion is creative, but can be minmized in the horizontal skyline is centered in the middle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp and reliable! I shoot skate videos and I've tried many different fisheye lenses over the years. This is definitely my favorite of them all, it's incredibly sharp, has a nice 180 degree angle of view, and the quality is great (doesn't feel super plastic-y like other rokinon lenses). I would definitely recommend this lens over any others if you are looking for a fisheye to shoot action sports. If you want to see a sample video - here's a test that I did last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEnXm7XT9tI

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great lens for Astrophotography, Landscapes, and wallets. As a university student, I don't have much money to spend on camera equipment. I have been getting into astrophotography, and I have found that Rokinon/Samyang/Bower lenses consistently offer very sharp, clear performance at a fraction of the price of the Canon alternatives. One of the ways in which they are able to do this is by excluding autofocus and drive motors. Additionally, this lens has an incredibly wide field of view. I have included my shot of the Milky Way below.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow!! With an amazing field of view an ease of use, the Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 is a fantastic Fisheye lens. I am looking forward to taking some great Texas Wildflower shots over the next couple of weeks. Image quality is great! Great Bokeh at f/2.8. Great image quality at f/5.6 and f/8. If you know what to expect from this manual lens, you can take amazing shots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Value Fisheye In my continuing quest to stand out in a crowded photography marketplace, I decided to spring for a fisheye lens. Though limited in scope of use, the unique look of the fisheye is great for some nature work. Architectural interiors are easier with a fisheye lens -- especially if you purchase the Fisheye-Hemi software to straighten the bowed vertical lines within Photoshop. This lens is a great value, but you do have to work in manual. No problem for me, having spent many years working with large-format cameras. If you are planning to use it for hyper-focal focusing, which is a real good reason for working with a fisheye lens, you would need to focus manually anyway.
