Nikon 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

Long reach in a sleek form factor, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II from Nikon is an 82.5-300mm-equivalent telephoto zoom for DX-format cameras. Well-suited to landscapes, sports, and portraiture, this lens's optical design incorporates one extra-low dispersion element for clear, accurate rendering and reduced color fringing. A Super Integrated Coating helps to minimize flare, ghosting, and reflections in order to gain improved contrast and color rendering when working in harsh lighting conditions. Suitable for both photo and stills applications, the Silent Wave Motor delivers fast and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus control. Additionally, complementing the lens's reach, is a four stop-effective Vibration Reduction system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Telephoto zoom is designed for DX-format Nikon F-mount cameras and provides an 82.5-300mm equivalent focal length.
One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.
VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by four stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
A retractable lens barrel design maintains an especially compact form factor when the lens is not in use.

    Nikon 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 reviews

AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 98.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for the job, great for the price. Mission specific, a lightweight 200mm zoom to put with an easy-to-carry D5500 travel kit (with a 16-85mm, and 35mm prime), replacing a hulking 80-200mm 2.8 D that doesn't autofocus. Does the 55-200 take better or even as good pictures? Of course not, but does pretty well for my needs and is much lighter and far more discreet. After ramping through a few tests I can recommend avoiding shooting more open than f5.6. Sharpness degrades quickly as you move away form the center of the lens when opening up further. I'm currently leaving the lens at f6/3 to f/8 and letting auto ISO the heavy lifting. The VRII works well enough though my non-scientific, hand-held, two cups of coffee results have been somewhat mixed. Zoomed to 135mm and beyond I'm not seeing a benefit at shutter speeds less that the zoom length. Which is ok considering the 1.5x sensor factor. Example: at 135mm w/VRII, shots at 1/125 are crispy even though the lens is virtually at 200mm. Below that, not so much. However, at wider zooms, VRII produces good results to 1/13 (55mm) and 1/20 (85mm)as one would expect. For the price adding this lens to my travel kit was a no-brainer. Shoot this lens right around the sweet spot between f5.6 and f8, using shutter speeds inline with typical zoom technique, and you'll get very nice images.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this Lens I thought what I needed for traveling light was one of those mirrorless cameras with their tiny, long lenses. What I really needed was this lens for my Nikon D7100. It may not be as sharp throughout its range as more expensive zooms of similar range, but it's tiny and very light and with my camera set to spot focus, it focuses quickly. When zoomed closed the inner workings are protected from bumps. I'd take a tiny bit of extra weight to have a metal mount, but that's a minor complaint. If this breaks, it's inexpensive enough that it won't be too painful to replace.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great walk-around lens This lens is much sharper than its predecessor, and being light, is a wonderful one to throw on a second body to stay in the car, or whatever. It is rather lightly built, so coddle it when you can, an I found the exposure somehow was a bit off when quite dark. At f/4 to f/5.6 it isn't the brightest lens in the bin, but for daylight use, I love it. I also own the 70-200 f/2.8 that weighs much more - so doesn't get thrown in the car so much. Even sharper and great in low light, but by comparison is a specialty lens. So buy the 55-200 for what it can do brilliantly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens Disclaimer - I am not experienced enough to give a very informed opinion. That said, the finished product does not lie. I took some photos of my daughter riding a swing at the park and they came out great. Autofocus was very quick, and most of the shots - when I timed them right - came out very crisp with nice bokeh. Probably deserves 5 stars, but again my lack of knowledge prevents me from adequately assessing the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I could not believe how sharp this lens is. I read a few very good reviews about this lens and when B&H had it with a $200 instant rebate for $136 I figured I have nothing to loose for the price and purchased one just to have a compact light lens for my second Nikon body. When I tried it out at different focal lengths I could not believe my eyes, it was as sharp or sharper than my other lenses purchased for hundreds of bucks more. The sharpness a bit less close to the edges and corners above 100mm but nothing noticeable on a 13x19 inch print. I think this was the best deal I ever had in my life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clear Portrait Pictures I'm pleased with this lens. The pictures that I can get are focused clearly on my subject, with a pleasing blurred background.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great First Zoom Lens This lens is perfect for an entry level zoom lens. The stabilization is totally worth having. The compact size is great fro traveling.
