Nikon 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II Lens is a versatile and compact telephoto zoom lens that is well-suited for portraiture, sports, or wildlife photography. When placed on a Nikon DX camera, it offers an angle of view equivalent to that of a 82-300mm lens on a full-frame 35mm digital camera. When paired with a Nikon DX 18-55mm lens, seamless wide angle to telephoto capability is obtained.

A Silent Wave Motor is utilized for fast and quiet autofocusing, while Vibration Reduction stabilizes optics within the lens to allow the user or camera to set shutter speed up to 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible before camera shake becomes apparent within the image. With Vibration Reduction, sharper results can be expected while photographing under low light, recording HD video, or when deliberately using slow shutter speeds. Picture quality is further ensured by Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass which minimizes optical distortion, while Super Integrated Coating minimizes ghosting and flare to provide high contrast and vivid results even under challenging lighting conditions.

An f/4 to 5.6 maximum aperture range with a rounded, seven-blade diaphragm is included for smooth, out-of-focus elements, and a 52mm front thread allows accessories such as filters to be directly attached.

Compatible with Nikon DX cameras and Nikon FX cameras with DX crop mode.
Maximum f/4 to 5.6 aperture range corresponds to 55mm to 200mm focal lengths.
Minimum f/22 to 32 aperture range corresponds to 55mm to 200mm focal lengths.
Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) Glass minimizes optical distortion.
Super Integrated Coating minimizes ghosting and flare while providing high contrast and vivid results.
Nikon VR II Image Stabilization allows shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible before camera shake becomes apparent within the image.
Manual Focus Override switch allows user control over focus at any time.
Rounded, seven-blade diaphragm provides smooth, out-of-focus elements and highlights.
Compact and lightweight design provides ease of transport.

    Nikon 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 reviews

AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 95.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for the job, great for the price. Mission specific, a lightweight 200mm zoom to put with an easy-to-carry D5500 travel kit (with a 16-85mm, and 35mm prime), replacing a hulking 80-200mm 2.8 D that doesn't autofocus. Does the 55-200 take better or even as good pictures? Of course not, but does pretty well for my needs and is much lighter and far more discreet. After ramping through a few tests I can recommend avoiding shooting more open than f5.6. Sharpness degrades quickly as you move away form the center of the lens when opening up further. I'm currently leaving the lens at f6/3 to f/8 and letting auto ISO the heavy lifting. The VRII works well enough though my non-scientific, hand-held, two cups of coffee results have been somewhat mixed. Zoomed to 135mm and beyond I'm not seeing a benefit at shutter speeds less that the zoom length. Which is ok considering the 1.5x sensor factor. Example: at 135mm w/VRII, shots at 1/125 are crispy even though the lens is virtually at 200mm. Below that, not so much. However, at wider zooms, VRII produces good results to 1/13 (55mm) and 1/20 (85mm)as one would expect. For the price adding this lens to my travel kit was a no-brainer. Shoot this lens right around the sweet spot between f5.6 and f8, using shutter speeds inline with typical zoom technique, and you'll get very nice images.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens Disclaimer - I am not experienced enough to give a very informed opinion. That said, the finished product does not lie. I took some photos of my daughter riding a swing at the park and they came out great. Autofocus was very quick, and most of the shots - when I timed them right - came out very crisp with nice bokeh. Probably deserves 5 stars, but again my lack of knowledge prevents me from adequately assessing the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I could not believe how sharp this lens is. I read a few very good reviews about this lens and when B&H had it with a $200 instant rebate for $136 I figured I have nothing to loose for the price and purchased one just to have a compact light lens for my second Nikon body. When I tried it out at different focal lengths I could not believe my eyes, it was as sharp or sharper than my other lenses purchased for hundreds of bucks more. The sharpness a bit less close to the edges and corners above 100mm but nothing noticeable on a 13x19 inch print. I think this was the best deal I ever had in my life.
