Nikon 300mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Combining long reach and a portable form factor, the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR from Nikon is a prime telephoto that features a unique Phase Fresnel element to greatly reduce the size and weight compared to other 300mm lenses. This element, along with one extra-low dispersion glass element, also helps to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy. Individual elements also feature both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings to suppress flare and ghosting, as well as a protective fluorine coating to guard the optical system from dust and moisture.

Benefitting the optical design, the lens also features a Silent Wave Motor AF system that produces fast, near-silent focusing performance to suit both stills shooting and movie recording, and which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Telephoto prime designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 450mm equivalent focal length.
One Phase Fresnel element and one extra-low dispersion lens element work to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by 4.5 stops, benefiting this lens's use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Fluorine-coated front element affords protection to the optical system.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon Z7/Z6 with FTZ, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Nikon 300mm f/4.0 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR Lens is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 119.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sharpness in a remarkably small size. This lens is amazing, the size and weight is just about half of it's predecessor and the sharpness is remarkable. I was lucky yo get one first time to be perfect, with no decentering problem which is pretty common with Nikon lenses. (Sometimes I had to send it back 2-3 times to get a good one but I got lucky this time.) I am extremely pleased with this lens which takes all the Nikon tele extenders real well with hardly any noticeable loss of sharpness wide open which just about disappears stopping it down to the next f/stop. Highly recommend this lens which is not a problem to carry around all the long even with the extenders.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lenses can not get much better than this. I had the old Nikon 300mm f/4 lens which was excellent, but a bit large and heavy. This lens is a dream come true for me. Small, light weight, extremely sharp even wide open and has outstanding performance with all the Nikon tele extenders. I have the TC-14E III, TC-17E II, TC-20E III and I am more than happy with the performance with all three on this 300mm lens. With the 1.4x there is absolutely no image quality loss, and with the other 2 it is so minimal that with a touch of extra sharpening is excellent. I am extremely happy with this lens, Nikon definitely made a Home Run with this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good I have been shooting the local wildlife with TC 1.7X and the 300 mm VR. The slow speed VR problem is likely to remain something that will not often bother me since I use faster speeds for animals. I am quite impressed with the resolution with a D800 or D810 and the TC 1.7X. The attached Cooper's Hawk is a good example in my back yard. After a bit of practice on the Tucson AZ wildlife I can't wait to take it out on a animal photography trip. The lens gives me about 500 mm potential in a relatively light package. Sweet and with a couple of TCs a package that is lighter than some of the equivalent FL zooms. This is the lens I wanted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tack sharp, works with all Nikon TCs I've tried this lens a week ago indoor and outdoor. The lens is tack sharp and focuses fast. With the TC-14EIII there's no difference in focusing speed (Nikon D750). With the TC-17 there's a little slow down but not important, even for tracking birds in flight. With the TC-20EIII there's a marginal slowdown in focusing in good light, a bigger slowdown in a cloudy day.In any case, sharpness is not effected with the TC-14 and a TC-17. With the TC-20, there's a marginal degradation but it's useful anyway. The lens is surprisingly light weighted and a pleasure to use. When shooting into bright light (or sun directly) the lens drops substantially in contrast, and creates a rainbow of flare when the sun is in or very close to the frame.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best wildlife lens I have ever used. After a long time with Olympus, my birding companions convinced me to try Nikon and the 300mm PF ED VR Lens. I previously used an Olympus OM-D E-M1 MkII and a 300mm f/4 Pro lens. My birding companions were taking the same photos I was and the clarity of their images was superior to mine. I decided to go Nikon and get the same lens - 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens. I have read there is some concern about the Phase Fresnel construction of the lens. I have noticed no flare or any other anomaly, even in challenging lighting conditions. The light weight and compact size make it ideal. My only disappointment is that Nikon does not include the tripod ring with the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens! I have the new D500 and have had issues with my 80-400 VR ii lenses and wanted a prime long lens that I can carry and as I mainly handhold, I don't want something too big. The 300/4 VR does this in spades. I had rented it when it first came out and tho it was nice, I felt my 80-400 was quicker on AF on my d7100. The d500 is a game changer tho. The lens Is fast, light and pin sharp. As I do mainly wildlife esp birds in flight, fast AF is critical. I used it with both 1.4 and 1.7tcs with good results esp. with no uv filter. These things have a negative effect on long lenses in my opinion. I have several good ones from both Hoya and B+R. If. You are serious about fast action photography with longer lenses, try taking these things off!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works.... I have been using this lens for about six months on a D800 and, at times, on a D300; the serial number is over 205101. My primary use has been outdoors for nature photography. Performance is as hoped. It's light weight and easily managed. Shots are great. The trick is that it is optically 300mm and needs to be handled as you might handle a 3OO mm lens. MPK61's review below seems to reflect an experience close to mine. No, this lens doesn't produce images as well as my tripod mounted 600mm f/4....but It didn't cost close to $10,000 and can be easily grabbed from camera bag or carried at my hip while I lug the big glass around. The accompanying image was hand-held with VR on as follows: D800, AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF ED VR; f/4, 1/100s, 400 ISO.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lightweight option for wildlife viewing treks I wanted a lighter, faster and higher quality lens than the Nikkor 80-400 D (old model) I had used since 2004. My primary use for this lens is hiking in jungles and wanted reduced weight and improved optics. My initial experience is very positive and am thrilled with the images I have captured, paired with a Nikon D750. The handling is spectacular, being both light enough to justify bringing on all hikes and balanced for freehand shooting. The optics are considerably improved over the old lens I used in these applications. I highly recommend this new lens!
