Pentax K-S2 Overview

  • 1Description

Stylish, compact, and durable, the black K-mount K-S2 DSLR Camera with 18-50mm Lens from Pentax offers photographers an AA filterless 20.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor in a highly weather-resistant body along with the versatile smc PENTAX-DA L 18-50mm f/4.0-5.6 DC WR RE standard zoom lens. It also has built-in Wi-Fi with NFC for wireless image transfer and camera control with a mobile device. Utilizing the PRIME M II Image Processing Engine, the K-S2 is very capable in a range of shooting conditions, most notably with a native sensitivity of up to ISO 51,200. Also, it has Sensor-Shift image stabilization that limits camera shake with slower shutter speeds, as well as full HD 1080p video recording at up to 30 fps.

Benefitting image capture is a SAFOX X 11-point autofocus system in which 9 points are cross-type for high-speed focusing. Also, located on the rear of the camera is a 3.0" 921k-dot vari-angle swing-out LCD monitor for reviewing and composing images. Working fast is possible as well thanks to a maximum shutter speed of 1/6000 second and continuous shooting rates of up to 5.5 fps.

In addition, the K-S2 features Advanced HDR and Clarity Enhancement modes that offer more detailed and cleaner photographs with a great dynamic range. Also, it has an AA filter simulator for capturing moire prone subject matter as well as 4K interval movie capture. Another strong area for the K-S2 is connectivity with built-in Wi-Fi and NFC capabilities, as well as compatibility with both Eye-Fi and FLU memory cards, which makes it even easier to share the self-portraits captured with the selfie-button. And, it has a variety of in-body RAW development settings, enhanced creative modes, and image filters.

Bundled with the camera is the compact smc PENTAX-DA L 18-50mm f/4.0-5.6 DC WR RE Lens, with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 27.5-76.5mm. The standard zoom offers users flexibility, and it has a retractable design for maintaining a smaller profile when not in use. Aspherical lenses are used to ensure edge-to-edge sharpness, and it has both the smc coating to reduce flare and ghosting and the Super Protect coating to prevent scratches and other damage. Additionally, it has a direct current AF motor and a weather resistant construction to match that of the K-S2.

20.2 MP APS-C CMOS Sensor & PRIME M II Image Processing Engine
Ensuring optimal image quality at sensitivities up to ISO 51,200 are the 20.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and the PRIME M II Image Processing Engine. This combination results in sharp images thanks to the omission of an AA filter on the sensor as well as low noise with the processing of the PRIME M II. Also, this enables a fast continuous shooting rate of 5.5 fps as well as advanced HDR and clarity enhancement modes.
SAFOX X Autofocus System
With 11 phase detection points (9 cross-type) and a sensitivity range of -3 to 18 EV, the SAFOX X AF system is able to lock focus quickly and easily in a variety of situations. Also, it has a focus peaking capability during live view to ensure users are able to focus even when in manual mode.
Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization
CIPA rated to 3 stops, the sensor-shift in-body image stabilization with rotational compensation reduces the effect of camera shake on your final image. Also, the K-S2 is able to use this shake reduction system to remove dust from your image sensor and also to enact the AA filter simulation mode for avoiding moire in your final image.
Full HD Video Recording & 4K Interval Mode
In addition to stills, the K-S2 is capable of full HD 1920 x 1080p video recording at up to 30 fps. It has options for 30, 25, and 24 fps in full HD as well as 1280 x 720 HD at 60 or 50 fps for up to 25 minutes at a time. The camera then saves these videos as MOV files with MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression. Also, in addition to standard movies, the K-S2 is able to record time lapse videos in an interval mode at up to 4K resolution at 24p. Also, there is a Star Stream mode
5.5 fps Continuous Shooting & 1/6000 Shutter Speed
Speed is key with 5.5 fps continuous shooting for up to 30 shots, or 9 frames of RAW. Also, this camera has a maximum shutter speed of 1/6000 second for very bright scenes.
3.0" Vari-Angle LCD Monitor & Pentaprism Viewfinder
Composing and reviewing images is made easier thanks to the inclusion of a 3.0" 921k-dot vari-angle LCD monitor. Also, this DSLR has a pentaprism viewfinder with 100% coverage and a 0.95x magnification for standard framing and composition.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity with NFC
Share your photos quickly and easily with the built-in Wi-Fi and NFC of the K-S2. It offers remote camera operation with the use of the Image Sync mobile app for Android and iOS devices. Also, it has a dedicated Wi-Fi button to quickly enable and disable this feature when necessary to preserve battery life.

    Pentax K-S2 Reviews

K-S2 DSLR Camera with 18-50mm Lens (Black) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera! I have several Pentax bodies and many lenses, including a K-3. But the K-S2 is often what I grab when I go out, along with a couple of extra lenses in a small Lowepro Rezo AW 140 shoulder bag. It makes a truly compact kit with the excellent new collapsible SMC 18-50 lens and a couple of Limiteds! The K-S2 is very fun to use, very solid, and its Sony 20MP sensor delivers. I especially like the articulating screen for odd angles and Macro shots. The WiFi is a little quirky like most DSLR WiFi, but does enable you to control camera function via tablet or smart phone. It's a winner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera I've been extremely pleased with this camera so far. I've had it in the rain, sleet, snow and on a windy sand dune. True to it's claims it really is weather resistant. Camera feels solid, handles well and the articulating LCD screen makes getting multi-angled shots a breeze (and fun!). I carry the camera a lot while mountain biking and it's size and weight are very acceptable considering the quality of the photos I get over my compact and phone cameras. The WiFi is really cool as I can set the camera up on the tripod and control if from my phone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera Decided to upgrade from my Pentax K10D; definitively fell in love with this small and sealed camera (I think weather/dust sealing should be a must for all DSLRs) as soon as I hold it in my (not very big) hands (anyone remember the Pentax MX?). It has accurate AF and metering systems. Settings and commands are very accessible and the presence of two control dials is a great plus! I was not interested in the articulating screen, but unexpectedly it turned out to be useful in a varIety of shooting situations (macro, pets, children, low-angle shots...). I also decided at the very last to purchase the camera with the 18-50 kit lens: very happy of the decision, I think this lens is under-rated as it is optically on-pair with my heavier DA 16-45 (the only cons being its activating system).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Aperture block failure across multiple Pentax camera lines Pentax cameras have a well known aperture block failure problem -- which means all of your pictures come out black regardless of the settings. And, of course, this happens after your warranty expires. Pentax refuses to do a recall or fix it free of charge --- and Its a problem across multiple Pentax lines. I had already spent $130 to fix it, it worked for a while, and now it happened again. I am not a professional photographer and shoot may be 4-5 times a year -- and to have it fail the one time I need it -- its really upsetting. So, ignore all the wonderful reviews here -- there are worthless. Everything works when its nice and shiny out of the box Thanks, Alex Lerner

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Entry Level Price W/ Intermediate/Professional Quality This is a fantastic camera for those that like to travel. The water resistant and dustproof features means I can take this camera w/ me on cruises, beaches, hiking, etc. and not worry about it getting wet or a little muddy. The flip out screen is a feature that most won't think they need...until they actually use one. If you're into creative shots (ground level for example) the flip out screen will make life a lot easier. Picture quality is excellent as well. Being a K-Mount with built in shake reduction into the body makes lens options substantial. You can either stick with newer lens (recommended), or shop the gray market for some used lenses at a steal of a price. The only downside is the physical size of the camera. By no means do I consider myself to have large hands. My index finger feels forced to fit on the shutter button. But having the two scrolls for adjusting aperture and shutter speed more than makes up for this. If you're willing to work with the small size and ergonomics, you'll be greatly rewarded w/ a phenomenal entry/intermediate level camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Camera with a couple of quirks I upgraded from a Pentax K-x which I loved. I shoot butterflies, flowers, and airplanes in addition to family events. The IQ on the camera is lovely and the larger sensor really captures small details. The autofocus is reasonably fast and unlike my K-x you see the AF framing in the view finder. So far I have not had any issues with battery life. My K-x used rechargeable AA's and it sucked the life out of them quickly so I actually like the battery life of the K-S2. On to more pros and cons Pro Great IQ lens stabilized in the camera not the lens WIFI app allows me to be in the family pictures for a change User interface is friendly and easy to navigate Kit lens is good and the AF is quiet 2 User defined shooting modes Cons WIFI app can be testy connecting to network Default exposure setting of Bright overexposed my outdoor shots (solved with custom user setting) Can get a bit heavy with large zoom lens or legacy metal lens Overall I am very pleased with the K-S2 and have attached a couple of the better macro shots I have taken. I am giving it 4 stars but really would give if a 4.5 if there was a half point rating system.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good camera for an outdoorsman I purchased this camera to take out in the woods with me and it works well. I also picked up a Pentax-Da 55-300mm Lens. Works great to action photos on the river, and great sunsets and landscapes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Weatherproof camera Weatherproof, has movable LCD Monitor, sharp pictures with new collapsible 18-50 zoom lens. light weight among DSLRs. Fixed the deficiencies of the previous Pentax K-S1. Lighter to carry around than the Pentax K-3. More megapixels than the K50/K30. However less battery life than the K3 or the K50/K30s with optional lithium AA battery pack.
