Westcott Ice Light 2 Overview

The Westcott Ice Light 2 LED light is an enhanced version of its predecessor built on the wish lists of photographers in the field. As their first order of business, Westcott made the light 50% brighter while maintaining its 21.6 x 7.5" form factor and rendering color-accurate output with a very high CRI of 96. Ten-step dimming is accessed via the unit's handle, which has a built-in digital display. The light also has a USB port and built-in Bluetooth technology for future wireless control. For videographers, Westcott has doubled its efforts to produce a truly flicker-free fixture.

A removable lithium-ion battery is yet another Ice Light 2 refinement. A 2.5-hour charge gives you 60+ minutes of runtime with the convenience of being able to charge a backup battery outside the fixture. You can also double your runtime by attaching an optional power pack battery extension. It uses the same charger as the Ice Light 2. Like its predecessor, the Ice Light 2 is virtually heat-free. Hold it as close as you want to your subject; the closer you get the more Ice Light's wraparound quality of light becomes evident. Since it's virtually heat-free, you never have to worry about injuring the talent or damaging the set.

While the ergonomic shape easily lends itself to handheld operation, the Ice Light 2 has a 1/4"-20 tap at each end for mounting it on a light stand or other accessory. The Ice Light 2 comes with gel clips, a battery, a 100-240 VAC power supply/charger, a cord storage bag, and a carry case with shoulder and belt straps.

Works great!

I bought the 2-pack to use as secondary lighting for e-commerce jewelry photography. I only have one mono-light and softbox and didn't want to spend the cash to buy 2 more, plus light stands, triggers, etc- much less the space to accommodate them. I tried high-power flashlights to add some sparkle to the items and they just didn't cut it- weird color casts and the light was too pointed. These did just the trick and took up virtually no additional space in my kitchen turned studio. My only complaint is the battery life of about 60 minutes, but you can buy back-up batteries to deal with that, or in my case take a much needed break. I can't wait to test these out for other photography applications.

Defective or a poor design

When charging this light there is no indicator that charging is taking place (no lights). I do not get any indication that the device is fully charged. When I power it up the power light is blue. There are no blue dots as some people have indicated. When the power light turned yellow that is my only indication it needs to be charged. This seems to be a defect.

I hesitated to spend this amount of $$$, but the quality of light, its portability and ease of control make it worthwhile. I only wish the batteries had a longer life.

Two (2) of these are perfect! Be sure to get the bracket accessory for your lightstand. Amazing for painting with light, as well.

I used it yesterday for the first time for a newborn shoot and it worked great. I am in the middle of processing my images and really like how they turned out with this light.

Not holding up after using for a couple years.

This light has been in my kit for about 2 years now. I'll start with the positives... it's light, feels great in the hand, pretty good output, nice and soft quality. The negatives for me are... the big one for me is, they claim a high colour accuracy but mine definitely has a green cast to it. It's noticeable to the eye. Secondly, I was looking forward to mounting it to a c-stand and using it for a backlight but the 1/4-20 thread stripped on me after moderate use, I had it mounted to a monopod for one or two shoots. so now it's limited in use for me as I'm a one-man band videographer most of the time.

I purchased 5. Had to return 2 of them within a month. B&H was great at handling the return. A month after the return 1 of the replacements died.

Anyone have problems shooting slow-motion, 60fps + ? I own an original ice light and hate the flickering. Wondering if I can upgrade to get rid of the flickering. Thanks in advance!
Asked by: Daniel
According to Westcott, the Ice Light 2 would not flicker when shooting at frame rates from 60 FPS and up.

question

How many watts does the light draw?
Asked by: Brian
I can't tell you exactly, but I would guess 150 watts at full power with a potentiometer down to about 30 watts at the lowest. I can shoot in a dark room at 2.8 at 200 iso 1/125 with no bounce at full power.

I wouldn't say so. Depends on ambient light levels and if it's dusk then sure, but sunlight is so much stronger
