Sony FE 28mm f/2 Overview

Nimble Wide-Angle
Satisfy your wide-angle fix on your full-frame E-mount camera with the fast and compact FE 28mm f/2 Lens from Sony. It boasts a bright design, advanced optics, and a sleek stature that makes it a great option for walkaround, everyday shooting, including street, architecture, and travel subjects.
Optics
  • Two extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • Three aspherical elements, including one Advanced Aspherical (AA) element, are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
  • Bright f/2 maximum aperture provides the ability to create images with a shallow depth of field as well as work in low-light conditions.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Autofocus and Design
  • Linear autofocus motor and internal focus design provide quick and precise autofocus performance and enables accurate and silent focusing while recording videos.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • If looking for an even wider perspective, this 28mm can accept optional Ultra-Wide and Fisheye Conversion Lenses, which will transform the lens into a 21mm or 16mm lens, respectively.

Sony FE 28mm f/2 Reviews

Small, light, but average resolution

I'm surprised by the 4.5 star rating and the high praise I'm seeing here. I find the image quality to be so-so. Tests over at The Digital Picture bare this out. Maybe there's something about color rendering, local contrast, or even the softness that photographers here like. But I'm looking for something sharper.

Compact wide-angle for street photography

This is a small, lightweight and generally good lens, a great fit for the smaller A7C series, and very suitable for casual and street photography. Not the sharpest lens around at wide open, but certainly sufficient, and it sharpens well when stopped down. I have a 24mm f1.4 G-Master which is significantly better, but also much heavier, larger and more expensive. For street shooting, this 28mm is excellent.

question

The filter thread on this lens appears to sit deeper than the front element, raising the possibility of a thick filter touching the glass piece. Has anyone tested the B+W F-PRO 007 49mm MRC Clear Filter with this lens to see if it stands clear of the front element?
Asked by: Anonymous
Filters will work without issue on this lens. They will not touch the front element.

question

Is this lens good for video?
Asked by: Christina
I personally love it for video when using a stabilizer like the Ronin because of the autofocus. However, manual focus is annoying on these lenses because of the focus-by-wire design.

How quiet is the lens when focusing? Can you hear it in a silent room or on the microphone?
Asked by: Thomas
It is fairly noisey when autofocusing. Not a problem for still photos, butI think it might be picked up by an on camera microphone. I replaced it with a Zeiss Batus 25mm f2 which is very quiet and focuses much quicker.

I know this fits the Sony A7rii, how is the picture quality of this lens on the A7rii when shooting stills?
Asked by: Mark
With the R series cameras it is best if you stay with GM and G series lenses. The R series cameras have such high resolution - using other lenses often falls short and images suffer.
