Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Overview

  • 1Description

Get up close and personal with the 1:1 magnification ratio of the full-frame compatible FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens for Sony's E-mount cameras. As a G series lens, it perfectly balances sharpness and bokeh through the use of various specialized elements, this ensures highly detailed images, with smooth out-of-focus areas, and an absolute minimum of aberrations. The lens also boasts a fast f/2.8 aperture for controlling depth of field and working in less-than-ideal light as well as a Nano AR coating that help eliminate ghosting and flare.

Critical to macro is accurate focusing, which is assisted by the speedy Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor present in the 90mm lens. Users also have direct access to a focus hold button and focus range limiter for further optimizing the lens' performance in certain situations. On top of this, the focusing ring slides for immediate switching between manual and auto focusing. And, the lens has built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for compensating for camera shake at all focusing distances.

Designed for full-frame E-mount cameras, this telephoto macro can also be used on APS-C systems where it provides a 135mm equivalent focal length.
True macro design affords a life-size, 1:1 magnification ratio along with an 11" minimum focusing distance for working with close-up subjects. A focusing distance and magnification scale is also printed on the top of the lens to aid in more technical applications.
Two extra-low dispersion elements, including one Super ED element, are featured in the lens design and helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
One aspherical element is incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
A Direct Drive SSM system and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contributes to more natural, intuitive manual focus control. An internal focus design further enhances usability by improving AF speed and ensuring that the overall length of the lens does not change during use.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
A focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between 11-19.7", 19.7"-infinity, or full, and a focus hold button is also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
This lens' focusing ring can be slid forwards and backwards to quickly shift from manual to autofocus modes, and vice versa.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Reviews

FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 128.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I do most of my shooting with A7 and 35mm 2.8 - a very compact combo. The size of this lens doubles the bulk and weight of that. However, sometimes I need to get close to the subject or get a flattened perspective with creamy background, so 90mm is very useful. I fell in love with this lens after the first test shot: not only is it impeccably sharp all across the frame, but the color rendition is amazingly detailed and rich. Plus, the ergonomics is great, with all functions laid out within easy reach of the left hand, and manual focus is easy to engage and use. Bottom line: this lens is capable of capturing everything the Sony sensor can deliver.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this lens! This lens is like two lenses in one. I use it with my A7RII. It is a great macro lens and the 90mm focal length and F2.8 works beautifully especially in low light as a portrait lens. It switches easily from A/F and manual mode by moving the lens ring in and out. The optical steady shot feature comes in handy on those hand-held shots. There is also a switch choosing whether you want to focus close (.5m-0.28m) or focus from .5m to infinity. It's a little heavier than I had wished, but I used to shoot Nikon so I am used to heavier equipment. I would recommend this lens to anyone who wants to do macro and could use the 90mm focal length for other suitable occasions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent glass for both macro and portraits From the shots taken so far with this lens, it is an absolute beast! Just getting into macro work, and was hesitant to take the plunge for this lens, and am loving it so far. Have taken great insect shots both on a tripod and handheld. The OSS works great, as I don't have the most steady hands. Reason for knocking a star is because the first copy of this lens that I received had a noticeable blemish on one of the inner lens elements. Thanks for B&H's great return policy, I got a new copy with no issues what so ever. There seems to be some problems with the QC of these lenses, but if you get a good copy it will be the best lens you own (if macro is your thing).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Sharp Lens prefect for Macro I am Videographer and I was looking for 85mm lens. 3 Lenses I was comparing Sony GM 85 1.4 and Zeiss Batis 85 1.8 and Sony 90 2.8. The reason I chose Sony 90mm is Because I liked Macro function and this lens is very Sharp. I like the mode you can swich to MF ring and this is really good for MF. Bokeh is good too but this is not perfet as Sony 85mm GM. Onething I don't like is you can hear the AF motor sound. It is ok in outside but in quite indoor this is very disturbing. You don't hear motor sound when you switch to MF mode. so that's works for me. But this is something you aware. Very Sharp lens the quality you won't regret! This is Perfect Macro Lens sony ever release (i think)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens, highly recommended I have just purchased a Sony a7R II to replace my Nikon D800 and had purchased the Vello adaptor to use with my Nikon 105mm AFS VR f/2.8 Macro. Apart from feeling heavy compared to my Sony lenses I found that the images I obtained were not as easy to capture as with the much lighter Sony 90mm. I have now used the Sony 90mm for further macro work as well as a telephoto and am extremely happy with the results. I now do not think twice about carrying this lens with me when shooting street photography as combined with my other lenses the additional weight and bulk are so much less than the Nikon and have taken some great shots as a consequence.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the extra cost This is my first ever macro lens. I nearly choked at the price and dithered (a lot) about this or the Rokinon, which is about half the price and manual focus. I am SO glad I bought this one. I haven't had a lot of time to reply work with it and learn about Macro photography, but the speed at which it focuses and the accuracy--plus the ability to do a manual-assisted focus (not sure the terminology, but the camera focuses, then you fine tune where you want the sweet spot) is very useful. I was surprised at the size...slightly larger (!) than my 18-200 zoom, but that's the 2.8 I guess.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Probably Sony's sharpest lens One of the 1st things I did when I got this lens was to drag out one of my 2' x 3' ISO 12233 charts to check for concentricity. I was stunned. The lens was perfect from the center to all four corners. Better than that, it appeared to out resolve all my other Sony lenses: 35mm f2.8, 55mm f1.8, and 70-200 f4. Although there was a little difference in f2.8 and f8 it was extremely small. Even f11 looked good. I good see almost no distortion and very little vignetting. The build is extremely solid. I couldn't be more pleased. As I do very little macro work, I was mainly interested in it as a short tele. It tested out extremely well. I have yet to test it at infinity, but preliminary work indicates it does this well also. Serious amateurs and pros should add this to their arsenal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SHARP If you don't like this lens, it's because you don't know how to use it! It is SUPER sharp and really well made! This is without a doubt the most sharp lens I have ever used. I also have the 85mm Batis, but the 90mm is for sure sharper, allot bigger and obviously not as bright. I use the 90mm for still life and portraits when I need f/2.8 or smaller aperture for portraits. I am planning to keep both, but if you twist my arm and make me choose either one, I'd got for the 90mm Macro.

    question

The ACCESSORIES webpage lists both the Sony - HVL-RL1 Macro Ring Light and the Sony - HVL-MT24AM Macro Twin Flash Kit as available accessories. However, there is nothing in the online manuals for either of these products which specifies that they can be used on a lens with a filter thread of 62 mm. Specifically, these products appear to be designed for lenses with filter threads of either 49mm or 55mm (via the supplied adapters). But the new Sony 90mm f2.8 has a filter thread 0f 62mm: Is it actually possible to use either of these accessories with this new Sony lens?
    Asked by: Richard R.
Hi Richard, The Sony HVL-RL1 actually Includes Shoe adaptor (ADP-AMA), adaptor ring (dia. 49 mm/55 mm/62 mm).

Does a tube extend out of the front of the lens with macro markings when focussing extremely close?
    Asked by: Joe
No. The Sony FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS lens is an internal focusing lens and maintains the same overall length at all focal distances. Focusing markings are listed on the barrel of the lens between the lens body and the focusing ring, not on the front of the lens.

    question

Would it work on Nex 7 too?
    Asked by: Anonymous
Yes; as the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens uses the standard Sony E-mount to connect to the camera, the lens would be compatible for use on the Sony Alpha NEX-7 Digital Camera.

    question

Does Sony make a tripod collar for FE 90mm f2.8 lens?If not is there a third party collar that would work on this lens, as a macro lens without a collar is much more difficult to use?
    Asked by: Richard D L.
Fotodiox makes a great replacement metal adapter for the A7 bodies. I installed one on my first A7 body and since then, no more lens slop. Four screws and your done. Just don't drop any of the screws on the sensor, as it is exposed during installation. They are around $50. The experts at B&H can point you in the right direction.

    question

Does this lens work well when taking pictures in a non-macro type situation? thank you
    Asked by: Duane
No reason why it would not work well. All modern lenses focus to infinity. What you are usually paying for is the ability to focus close (as in a macro lens). My question to you would be are you paying for a feature (close focus) that you don't really need? If you intend to do macro, then you need it. And if you ARE considering macro, particularly on small subjects like insects, you should research a focusing rail and focusing stacking software like Helicon Focus. Depth of field is really shallow when using macro lenses on close subjects. Hope this helps.

    question

I would like to know, how is the autofoco for wedding or walking people.... slow? fast? The color is like a zeiss?
    Asked by: Mauro Lucio A.
The Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens has reasonably decent focusing speed, and would focus fast in bright lighting. As it has a f/2.8 aperture, it would also focus relatively fast in low lighting situations. However, you may experience slightly slow focusing when focusing within the macro mode range for close-up photography, and in some instances, you may wish to use manual focus when focusing close up in macro situations.
