Sony 90mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

In addition to adding the prime macro lens to your camera bag, the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens with Circular Polarizer Filter Kit from B&H also includes a versatile 62mm circular polarizer filter to help minimize reflections and glare while increasing color saturation.

  • Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens

Get up close and personal with the 1:1 magnification ratio of the full-frame compatible FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens for Sony's E-mount cameras. As a G series lens, it perfectly balances sharpness and bokeh through the use of various specialized elements, this ensures highly detailed images, with smooth out-of-focus areas, and an absolute minimum of aberrations. The lens also boasts a fast f/2.8 aperture for controlling depth of field and working in less-than-ideal light as well as a Nano AR coating that help eliminate ghosting and flare.

Critical to macro is accurate focusing, which is assisted by the speedy Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor present in the 90mm lens. Users also have direct access to a focus hold button and focus range limiter for further optimizing the lens' performance in certain situations. On top of this, the focusing ring slides for immediate switching between manual and auto focusing. And, the lens has built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for compensating for camera shake at all focusing distances.

Designed for full-frame E-mount cameras, this telephoto macro can also be used on APS-C systems where it provides a 135mm equivalent focal length.
True macro design affords a life-size, 1:1 magnification ratio along with an 11" minimum focusing distance for working with close-up subjects. A focusing distance and magnification scale is also printed on the top of the lens to aid in more technical applications.
Two extra-low dispersion elements, including one Super ED element, are featured in the lens design and helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
One aspherical element is incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
A Direct Drive SSM system and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contributes to more natural, intuitive manual focus control. An internal focus design further enhances usability by improving AF speed and ensuring that the overall length of the lens does not change during use.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
A focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between 11-19.7", 19.7"-infinity, or full, and a focus hold button is also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
This lens' focusing ring can be slid forwards and backwards to quickly shift from manual to autofocus modes, and vice versa.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

  • Hoya 62mm alpha Circular Polarizer Filter

The Hoya 62mm alpha Circular Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is non-coated and has approximately 96% average light transmission. It is constructed from optical glass and precision milled aluminum frames.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.

Sony 90mm f/2.8 reviews

FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens with Circular Polarizer Filter Kit is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it but... Got this lens for about a month now, shoot about 20 sessions, mostly outdoor flower and plants. The detail is very sharp even in hand held on an A7r iii. The only thing I don’t like is it hunts a lot in auto focus, and sometimes failed. Manual focus works perfectly. I tried various AF setting and none made any difference. Another little thing to pick on is the size of the lens. I moved over from Nikon for Sony small size, but this lens is bigger than Nikon lens, specially with the hood on. It’s a little front heavy when mounted on a tripod. I have to switch to a pan and tilt head to make it easier to accurately position the camera. It’s also a good lens for portrait, I am comfortable using it I stead of Battis 85mm. Overall, I like the lens ability to handle depth of field to create pronounced dynamic range on A7r iii. I used to use macro ring on a Zeiss 55mm and thought that was good enough for what I need, after getting this lens, there is no going back. However, I have to take one star off for the hunting.
