Formatt Hitech FC77ND3.9 overview

  • 1Description

The Formatt-Hitech 77mm Firecrest ND 3.9 Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 13-stop reduction in exposure. This 3.9 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multi-coating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multi-coating is also scratch-resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

ND 3.9 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 13-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.
The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multi-coating is water- and scratch-resistance for greater overall durability.
Schott Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Formatt Hitech FC77ND3.9 reviews

77mm Firecrest ND 3.9 Filter (13-Stop) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor resolution compared to my B+W 10-stop I'm a professional photog and gallery owner on the Oregon coast. I wondered why this filter was half price and I guess I have my answer: resolution through this filter is very soft/blurry compared to my B+W ten-stop. I wonder if this is one that had been returned from a defective batch as the box appeared possibly to have been opened. At any rate it's a letdown from such a well-known brand and it's going back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality control issues fixed? I reluctantly purchased the 13 stop filter after having previously owned two other Firecrest ND filters that were defective. There were no other 13 stop filters available in this size by other manufacturerers and a 13 stop would complete my collection. So far this copy looks good. I have not noticed any image defects like the other two copies had. Hopefully quality control issues are fixed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from B&H, The Best Around First, the Hitech Firecrest ND filter is one of the best out there and a nice low cost alternative. Second, B&H rocks over the other two web giants that begin with the letter A. After gearing up for a trip this weekend I discovered my 13 stop filter was damaged beyond use. I ordered a replacement from B&H around 11:30am yesterday and the filter was on my doorstep this evening! Free shipping and no tax. Service that like will keep me coming back to B&H over the others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressed This filter is great. I have a tendency to shoot at long focal lengths in windy conditions in San Francisco where square filters act like sails in the wind. Even using it for ultra wide I was very impressed by the slim profile. This thing is so slim that there is 0 vignette on any of my images going to 16mm. This 13 stop allows me to do 4-5 minute exposures in the middle of the day and I love it. Highly quality Schott Superwite Glass to boot.
