Electro-Voice RE20 Overview

Electro-Voice RE20 Broadcast Announcer Microphone with Variable-D (Fawn Beige)
A broadcast industry standard, the RE20 Broadcast Announcer Microphone with Variable-D from Electro-Voice is a cardioid dynamic microphone that delivers reliable, low-noise performance with exceptional clarity and definition. This model is styled in the classic fawn beige finish.
This microphone is part of the B&H Virtual Mic Locker, an online tool to help our valued customers determine the sonic differences between popular microphones for podcasting and voice over work. Each microphone was recorded using a Grace Design M103 preamp into a Presonus Quantum 2626 interface.
Tailored Response
Response tailored especially for vocals with high sound pressure handling capabilities.
Construction
Rugged, steel construction with low handling noise.
True Cardioid Pattern
The RE20 features a cardioid polar pattern with no coloration at 180-degrees off-axis—the frequency response is nearly independent of angular location of the sound source, creating virtually no off-axis coloration, yet providing the greatest possible rejection of unwanted sounds.
Internal Windscreen
An internal blast and wind filter eliminates pop and wind noise at the closest proximity. In recording sessions or on stage, singers can "close talk" the microphone, singing with their lips almost touching the grille screen with no worry of "P-pops" or excessive sibilance.
Bass Tilt-Down Switch
The bass tilt switch corrects spectrum balance for use in long-reach situations and eliminates low frequency noise and rumble.
Flat Frequency Respone
The RE20's flat frequency response remains flat even at extremely close proximity.

dbx 286s - Microphone Preamp/Channel Strip

The 286s from dbx is a full featured channel strip that includes a studio quality microphone/instrument preamplifier, and four processors that can be used independently or in any combination. The hassle of patching together multiple processors for use on one track can be frustrating. The unit delivers the entire microphone processing chain needed in a single box, with the shortest, cleanest signal path.

Features include wide-ranging input gain control, switchable +48V phantom power, and an 80Hz high-pass filter to remove low frequency hum, rumble or wind. The dbx OverEasy compressor can transparently smooth out uneven acoustic tracks, or deliver the classic "in your face" vocal performance. Vocal sibilance can be tamed or even eliminated and high frequency distortion removed from instruments such as cymbals with the frequency tunable De-Esser.

The Enhancer provides both HF Detail and LF Detail controls that can add sparkle and crispness to vocals, while making adjustments to the low frequencies for adding fullness and depth to vocals and bass instruments. Muddy low midrange frequencies can be cleaned and the separate threshold and ratio controls on the Expander/Gate allow for subtly reducing headphone leakage, or radically gate noisy guitar amplifiers.

The channel strip provides a full complement of metering and status LEDs. The XLR microphone input accepts balanced or unbalanced inputs, allowing for easily connecting professional or home studio microphones. The 1/4" TRS line input can accept balanced/unbalanced signals to process live electronic instruments or pre-recorded tracks at mix-down, while an insert jack provides access to the signal flow between the preamp and the processing sections for connection to external processors.

Auray SSM-BC10 Microphone Suspension Shockmount (Black Matte)

The black matte SSM-BC10 Microphone Suspension Shockmount from Auray is designed to keep your front-address microphone free from vibrations and noise that can often affect broadcast and voiceover applications. The heavy-duty bands isolate your microphone, eliminating the vibrations that can travel through your mic stand or broadcast arm.

The shockmount is equipped with a standard 5/8"-27 threaded socket and fits most mic stands and broadcast arms. Its locking knob and protective inner ring secure your mic in place while protecting its finish. The swiveling basket allows for precise microphone placement.

Eliminates Noise
The SSM-BC10 prevents unwanted vibrations that can radiate through a mic stand or broadcast arm from disrupting your broadcast or recording.
Swiveling Basket with Tension Knobs
The swiveling basket provides precise microphone positioning. Dual tension knobs maintain the angle of the microphone while still allowing smooth repositioning.
5/8"-27 Thread
The SSM-BC10 features a mic stand adapter with a standard 5/8"-27 thread that is compatible with most mic stands and broadcast arms.
Locking Knob with Inner Ring
The locking knob holds the microphone firmly in place. The inner ring applies uniform pressure to the outside of the microphone and prevents damage to the microphone finish
All-Metal Construction
The SSM-BC10 is a durable studio accessory that is built to last. The all-metal construction assures security and protection for the microphone.
Heavy-Duty Elastic Bands
The heavy-duty elastic bands suspend the microphone in the center of the basket, and prevent shocks and vibrations that can radiate through the mic stand or broadcast arm from reaching the microphone.
Black Matte Finish
Using the SSM-BC10 for on-air broadcast, the black matte finish will not reflect lights into the cameras.
For Front-Address Microphones
The SSM-BC10 fits front-address microphones such as the Electro-Voice RE20 and RE320 and the Heil Sound PR 40.

Auray WBF-BDM Foam Windscreen for Broadcast Dynamic Mics (Black)

The black Auray WBF-BDM foam windscreen is tailored to fit most broadcast dynamic microphones with a 2" diameter such as the Rode PodMic and the Shure SM7B. It's a practical and simple solution that minimizes vocal plosive sounds of announcers and singers who work up close to the microphone.

In recording or podcast studios, it will also reduce noise from moving air produced by air conditioning, fans, or ventilation systems, up to 8 dB with only minimal high-frequency loss. The hypoallergenic and washable foam also shields your microphone from dust, debris, and moisture that can damage your microphone's capsule.

Acoustic Foam
The windscreen simplifies recording podcasts or vocals with a broadcast dynamic microphone. When recording at home or in the office, you'll need to reduce the noise from moving air caused by ventilation systems, fans, or air conditioners without muffling the sound. Rather than turning off the AC or fan while you record, simply slip the windscreen over your microphone to minimize noise due to moving air.
Minimizes Vocal Plosives
If you prefer to work close to the microphone for those great low frequencies from the proximity effect, you're bound to incur the drastic P and B sounds that seem like miniature explosions. As an alternative to moving further away from the microphone, the windscreen minimizes those disruptive vocal plosives while allowing you to stay close to the mic.
Protects against Damage
Dirt, dust, and even the moisture from your breath can damage a mic capsule. This simple foam windscreen shields against harmful debris and moisture, and it prolongs the life of your microphone.

The Auray BAI-2X is a two-section broadcast arm with internal springs and an integrated XLR cable. This versatile and sturdy broadcast arm is great for studio as well as home use. It's ideal for broadcast, voiceover, and podcasts.

The BAI-2X broadcast arm is designed with internal springs that provide a clean and sleek look. The broadcast arm features a standard 5/8"-27 microphone stud mount that is compatible with most shockmounts and microphone clips. The angle of the microphone stud mount can be adjusted and secured with the locking knob, and the angle is maintained when re-positioning the arm. This eliminates the need to readjust it every time the arm is moved. With an extension of up to 40 inches, and the ability to rotate the arm 360°, the BAI-2X allows for precise microphone placement.

The BAI-2X also features a heavy-duty combo mount that consists of a sturdy C-clamp and a heavy-metal desktop mount. The C-clamp is capable of fastening onto desktops up to 2.3" thick. The C-clamp's slim design minimizes the clearance needed to mount it between a desk and wall. The desktop mount detaches from the C-clamp and provides the option of permanent installation to a desktop with the mounting screws (included). Electro-Voice RE20 Reviews

Lives Up To The Hype

If you're looking to upgrade for streaming or podcasting, don't overthink it and just get this mic, sound rejection is great, responsiveness is smooth and sounds great even before adding minimal EQing for some resonance. I've added the BSW RE-POP (black) as a pop filter and while expensive, it's worth it. Looking to add the HEIL PRSMB shock-mount instead of Electro-Voice's giant shock-mount to save space.

Great Mic, bad Kit

No one can dispute the RE20s quality, and I have no issue with it. The Broadcaster Kit package B&H spec'd out is different story. The included Auray boom and shock mount are terrible. The boom is incredibly stiff and difficult to position without two hands. I hadn't realized it initially, but it is identical to a generic boom I received for evaluation for free but that retails for about 35 dollars. I think Auray may have just contracted an mfg and paid them to slap an auray label on the cheapest boom they make. The shock mount is woefully under-built for the RE20. It's a big heavy mic, and the bands on the mount are not strong enough to secure it without it sagging to within a millimeter of the frame. I expect the mic will be resting on the metal frame in a few weeks as the bands begin to stretch. My advice, get the RE20, skip the B&H kit and instead spec your own. I have a Rode RODE PSA1 boom that is excellent, and the same price as the Auray.

What is a good small stand, shock mount, etc. for travel podcasting on the go on desks?
Asked by: Allen
For a compatible shock mount to use with the Electro-Voice RE20 Broadcast Announcer Microphone, you can use the Electro-Voice 309A Suspension Microphone Shock Mount (B&H # EL309A) or the Auray SSM-BC10 Microphone Suspension Shockmount (B&H # AUSSMBC10). For a desktop stand, you can use the Auray TT-6220 Telescoping Tabletop Microphone Stand (B&H # AUTT6220B), the Gator Frameworks Round-Base Desktop Mic Stand (B&H # GAMIC0501), or the On-Stage DS7200B Adjustable Height Desktop Mic Stand (B&H # ONDS7200B). If you prefer a studio arm, you could use the O.C. White Podcast Pro by Accu-Lite Mic Boom Package (B&H # OCALMBP1), the RODE PSA1 Studio Boom Arm for Broadcast Microphones (B&H # ROPSA1), the Auray BA-XE4 Broadcast Arm with Integrated XLR Cable (B&H # AUBAXE4), the 512 AUDIO 512-BBA Microphone Boom Arm (B&H # 51512BBA), or any other model that you prefer. For a pop filter, you can use the Auray PFNY-6 Nylon Pop Filter with Gooseneck and C-Style Clamp for Mic Stands and Booms (B&H # AUPFNY6) or the On-Stage Pop Blocker for Electro-Voice RE20 and RE320 Microphones - Version 2 (B&H # ONPBRE20JBH2).

The photos show it with a shock mount, does it actually come with it?
Asked by: zach
No, the shock mount is not included. The RE20 comes with a mic stand adapter which you can see in the photo of the RE20 in fawn beige finish (B&H # ELRE20). The shock mount shown with the RE20 in black finish is the Electro-Voice 309A (B&H # EL309A) which is available separately.

question

Does it need a cloudlifter preamp to boost gain for better quality?
Asked by: Anonymous
The microphone sensitivity is listed as 1.5 mV/Pa. You can find a concersion calculator through google that puts that at -56.5dB. Check the gain specs on your interface or preamp. if you have about 56dB of gain, you won't need a preamp.
