ZEISS 25mm f/2.0 overview

  • 1Description

Pairing the tested Distagon concept with contemporary functionality, the Batis 25mm f/2 Lens from ZEISS is a wide-angle prime designed specifically for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. The innovative design of this lens features an OLED display that highlights the focus distance and depth of field range for quickly recognizing your focusing parameters, and its autofocus performance is benefitted by linear motors for fast, smooth performance. Four double-sided aspherical elements within a floating elements design help to control aberrations and distortions throughout the focusing range and contribute to even edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination, and a T* anti-reflective coating reduces flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color neutrality. Ideal for architecture, landscape, and interior photography, this lens' 82° angle of view pairs with a 7.9" minimum focusing distance for producing creative perspectives and unique close-up imagery. Additionally, for working in inclement conditions, the lens also features a dust- and weather-sealed construction.

This versatile wide-angle lens is designed specifically for full-frame E-mount mirrorless digital cameras and can also be used on APS-C-sized E-mount cameras, where it will provide a 37.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also offers control over the focus position when using selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.
Distagon optical concept incorporates 10 glass elements within 8 groups and also employs a floating elements design to reduce aberrations throughout the focusing range. Four of the elements feature a double-sided aspherical design, too, for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination, as well as reduced distortion.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coatings have been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections in order to provide greater image clarity, contrast and color fidelity.
Integrated OLED display on the top of the lens shows the distance of the focal plane from the camera as well as the depth of field range for quickly recognizing the parameters of focus in use, even when working in low-light conditions.
Linear motors benefit the autofocus performance of the lens and provide smooth, fast, and quiet operation. For manual focusing, a rubberized ring offers greater tactile control for precise placement of focus.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.

ZEISS 25mm f/2.0 reviews

Batis 25mm f/2 Lens for Sony E Mount is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 81.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for travel and indoor Great color, great build quality, and very sharp. AF works very good too. One thing this lens has is an OLED window whiich shows you the focus distance and DOF. This is very useful, especially when shooting landscape where you want everything to be sharp. You need to change the lens setting to turn the OLED always on. Read the lens manual! There is one drawback however. The sunstar from this lens is not as good as the Zeiss Loxia lenses. Well, it's not even as good as the modern Nikon wide angle primes like Nikon 20mm f1.8G. I choose this lens over the Zeiss Luxia 21mm f2.8 for its AF and 25mm is more suitable for travel and indoor kids' shoots.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Infinity autofocus problems with 7RII Optical quality and autofocus speed is great. BUT: 1. Can't autofocus to infinity 100% correctly with 7RII, even with the latest Sony firmware 2.0. It focuses approximately to 15-20 meters, which is noticable if you shoot at f2.0. So one have to use manual focus to have 100% sharp horison with f2.0. 2. LCD distance scale doesn't waok correctly as well. Again the same problem - indicated figures are less than in reality. Apprpximately 30% less :( Sony and Zeiss service can't resolve the problem at present time. looks like we need to wait for new firmware from Sony...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A stunning lens - especially spectacular on the new A7Rii This is my new favorite wide angle lens. For years I thought nothing would ever match the Leica 28mm Summicron ASPH which was absolute heaven on the M240, but this one does. It is razor sharp across the frame, has the wonderful Zeiss 'pop' and beautifully rendered OOF areas. Build quality is top-notch. Sure, it's a little big, but the handling on the A7 family bodies is perfect. Plus, you get very fast autofocus, the super-cool digital DOF display and images that will blow you away. Really, just buy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, lightweight landscape lens for hiking and backpacking I bought this lens as THE single lens that I would travel with on multi-day backpacking trips to do both day and night landscape / astrophotography. It has been great for both and would highly recommend it for anyone trying to have a great wide angle, fast lens, but minimize weight. It is super sharp, corner to corner at f/8, which is where I normally shoot day landscapes. I have also sucessfully used this on the PilotFly H2 gimbal - very easy to balance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Holy minimum focal distance batman. Needed something wider than my 35 and decided to get the Zeiss. I wanted to invest in something with a really good build quality and design. What really surprised me was the minimum focal distance. I really didn't think it was a big deal initially but I found out I could switch from landscapes and then take very close up shots of leafs and pine cones while I was shooting in Yosemite. Really nice surprise. Photos shot on A7rMK2 with Batis 25mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better and better... Have been using this lens for two months now, and as I become accustom to it, I am loving the lens more and more (and this is not always the case with me.) It seems to meet every optical demand I place on it and continually surprises with excellent results. Great both in the street, or in hills- it is a fast, sharp, beautiful lens. As someone who shot with Leica M series lenses for thirty years I had serious separation anxiety. Happy to have a new home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Lens This is one amazing piece of glass. Everything about it is stellar. It's sharp corner to corner, even wide open. The focal length doesn't lend itself well to portraits, but still got some nice shots of my daughters.. when I pixel peeped, their faces/eyes were SO SHARP... The Zeiss 3D effect is on full display- the bokeh is so buttery.. it is close to being a macro lens with how close it can focus... Straight out of the camera, I got some AMAZING landscape shots. The colors are just out of this world. Shooting straight into the sun, i got 0 flare. NONE. I can't say that about all my Zeiss glass, T* coating and all. Shooting foliage with high contrast background, I had to strain to see any CA at wide open, and stopping down to f/4 eliminated it completely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Amazing Lens First off, let me just say - this lens is gorgeous. Build quality is superb, the lines it has and the simplicity behind it. Upon opening the box, I was blown away. First few photos with it I was shocked at the clarity. Once I was able to use it in lower light, that's where it began to shine. It focuses fast, producing sharp, crispy photos with lots of contrast. Only negative is it did not come with any kind of lens pouch or bag. Other than that, I give it 5 stars. I highly recommend this lens to anyone.
