Wooden Camera UMB-1 Overview

The Wooden Camera UMB-1 Universal Matte Box (Base) mounts to 15mm LWS rods using a height-adjustable bracket and features two rotating 4 x 5.65" filter stages, with an optional third stage available as an add-on. It has a 143mm diameter opening and includes a universal cloth donut with easy-to-grab finger loops. For accessory mounting, the matte box includes NATO accessory rails on the left, right, and top. Completing the package is a folding top flag. The UMB-1 is designed to be user upgradable and can quickly transition between this Base configuration and Clamp On or 15mm LWS Swing Away configurations using optional accessories.

The components are shipped in a box with custom cut foam. This foam can be removed from the shipping box and inserted into a Pelican 1550 case. Please note that the Pelican 1550 case is not included.

Well Built and thoughtful with some quirks

This Mattebox was purchased as part of a new camera build featuring a RED V Raptor, Zeiss CP.3s and Bright Tangerine Rails and Riser and plates kit. Overall the Mattebox was straightforward and easy to setup interfacing nicely with the CP.3 95mm openings. One quirk I encountered involved the swing away feature. After unlocking the swing away feature the next step is to turn a small knob that runs a rack and pinion style system to extend the matte box out in front of the lens before swinging it away. On my copy of the matte box this gear/knob is very sticky and finicky requiring two hands to help support and guide the matte box out with a very crunchy gear feel that is not confidence inspiring. I would rate this Mattebox a 5 out of 5 if this was mechanically better, especially for the price paid. Otherwise this matte box has everything you would need to setup multiple configurations, be it a fast run and gun gimbal setup or a full large build out.

This matte box is worth every penny. You may be thinking “it’s just a matte box why spend that amount of money on something basic”. The reason id edge you in this direction is the quality of Arri products at a industry cheep price. The stages feel nice when slid into place and also feel secure. The customization is great because you can build as budget comes in. It’s durable and adjustable. Wooden is a great company and their products have always treated me well.

Well priced and functional, but quirky

This thing feels very solid, and I was impressed with it back when I saw it on the show floor at NAB. The swing-away locking pin is really solid, the tray anti-drop latch reduces a lot of anxiety, and it all still feels very compact for the amount of features. Coming from a Redrock Micro mattebox, the UMB-1 is a big step up. Its not perfect though. My three biggest gripes with this mattebox are #1: the small size of the tray locking and rotation knobs. I have to place my fingers at a specific angle to have any hope of adjusting those screws, and I keep mixing up rotation vs. tray lock. #2: The left NATO slide hits my follow focus when Im using shorter still lenses. The length of the rail makes sense though, so its just an unfortunate thing. #3: The retaining ring for the 138mm round holder is incredibly tiny, and sits INSIDE the holder, so its impossible to lock it securely without smudging the filter itself.

For the price there is nothing better. Solid construction, modular design. This does everything you'd want and can handle the rigors of on set use and abuse.

Great alternative to Arri Matte Boxes, but with an asterisk.

It works like a charm, almost all the time. It's so close to just being a cheaper version of Arri's swing-away matte box. I'll start with what I love. The Pro set is great because it comes with all the bells and whistles in case you want to use swing-away or clamp on on many different sizes. Those adapter rings click into place and really feel like they're set in. The inclusion of all the French flags is great as well. The actual implementation of some other features is questionable. First of all, this kit was advertised as fitting into a Pelican 1550 with the included foam holders, which is a very thoughtful thing for Wooden Camera to do. In reality, the slots where the French flags are get very tight and bulge out, so I had to cut out one of the slots to give some breathing room. If you try to fit everything right into the Pelican without any modification, the foam really gets tight. Also one of the knobs to tighten the matte box on 15mm rods is a circle that lies right underneath the matte box part and is very difficult to reach and tighten unless you have thin fingers. Why wasn't this a wing nut tie down like the one on the opposite side??? Another thing is how the matte box actually swings away. You have to unlock it with a tie down, then rotate a knob to extend the matte box away from the lens, and then FINALLY press the button to release. It seems a bit convoluted, though sometimes it's a nice feature to have to adjust the matte box's position on lenses of slightly different lengths. But in the end, why didn't they just make the entire matte box easier to untighten and slide along the 15mm rods??? Still though, I'm happy I have this matte box in my kit. If you're wondering about this specific brand versus Tilta (cheapest) versus Arri (very expensive), I'd say this is a good compromise between the two and has every feature you'd want. Also a side note, I had to return the Tilta swing-away matte box for this one because the Tilta doesn't have as much height or angle control compared to the Wooden Camera version.

Really solid matte box

Matte boxes are a funny thing... you definitely need them and they're definitely expensive. I test drove a few, ranging in price and landed on Wooden's. It fulfills all my needs. It's lightweight, durable, really ergonomically sound, and most importantly, fits my old vintage lens which has a super large lens diameter. Not many matte boxes fit the older, larger vintage lenses and this one did. I love the swing away arm and the filter trays are great.
