This is an old matte box that has not been updated in nearly a decade It's heavy The matte box is thick injection molded plastic The flags are heavy steel The tray anti-drop catches do not work very well - trays can slip past this when loaded with a filter The stage locking knobs and rotation locking knobs are so close together that you need tiny, tiny fingers to manipulate them The gear that moves the box forward and backward jams easily and regularly - you have to really fiddle with it to get it work The ring compression knob is difficult to grip The right side rod knob is difficult to grip

Well Built and thoughtful with some quirks

This Mattebox was purchased as part of a new camera build featuring a RED V Raptor, Zeiss CP.3s and Bright Tangerine Rails and Riser and plates kit. Overall the Mattebox was straightforward and easy to setup interfacing nicely with the CP.3 95mm openings. One quirk I encountered involved the swing away feature. After unlocking the swing away feature the next step is to turn a small knob that runs a rack and pinion style system to extend the matte box out in front of the lens before swinging it away. On my copy of the matte box this gear/knob is very sticky and finicky requiring two hands to help support and guide the matte box out with a very crunchy gear feel that is not confidence inspiring. I would rate this Mattebox a 5 out of 5 if this was mechanically better, especially for the price paid. Otherwise this matte box has everything you would need to setup multiple configurations, be it a fast run and gun gimbal setup or a full large build out.

I have a Zacuto Pro Baseplate & Amira. The Zacuto riser block doesn't go high enough is there a accessory to make swing away?
Asked by: Richard
To convert the Wooden Camera UMB-1 Universal Matte Box (Pro) to a swing-away, you can use the Wooden Camera Swing-Away Arm for UMB-1, B&H # WO202800.

can you mount a monitor arm to the matte box? it looks like there are 1/4 20 holes on top
Asked by: Alex
While it would theoretically be possible to connect certain monitor arms onto one of the threaded holes (taps) in the Wooden Camera UMB-1 Universal Matte Box (Pro) B&H# WO202100), matte boxes (including this one) are not especially stable nor secure enough for such usage. Moreover, since it attaches to the front of the lens, any instability caused by the weight of the arm and monitor could translate into movement that could impair the stability of the shot. While there may be use cases when it could be done, any camera movement with such a setup could result in a shaky image.

The RotaPola Rota-Tray 4x5.65" with Circular Polarizer should work well in this matte box, BH #RO1056TAPOLA. https://bhpho.to/3auXZFF
