SmallHD MON-501 overview

  • 1Description

SmallHD's 501 HDMI On-Camera Monitor with 3D LUT Support brings full HD resolution to a durable lightweight on-camera monitor the size of a smartphone. The screen packs 441 pixels per inch, providing a sharp clear image on such a small screen. It features HDMI input and HDMI output. With a rubberized aluminum frame, the unit is 3/4" thick and weighs about 9 ounces, so it is light enough to mount to your camera without weighing you down, yet extremely rugged.

Small HD has developed a menu system designed to be easy to navigate with the built-in joystick. Within the system is the Pages system, which allows you to create and store up to 8 preset configurations. You can easily see the effect of your configurations on the image, swiping between the configurations using the joystick. The 501 supports 3D LUTs, and you can save those as a configuration page as well. It is worth pointing out that you can apply a configuration page setting to either the monitor's screen, the output, or both at the same time. You can also assign a different configuration set up to the monitor's screen and the output. You can mount the SmallHD Sidefinder to the 501 to use it as an EVF, SmallHD Sidefinder not included.

The SmallHD 501 on-camera monitor features a Full HD, 1920x1080, LCD display, with a pixel density of 441 PPI. The 501's LCD display is able to produce 85% NTSC Color Gamut (greater than the REC. 709 color standard), rivaling the color capabilities of OLED technology.
The monitor sports HDMI input and HDMI output.
You can apply a 3D LUT to the monitor and still view your video in real-time.
The configuration system, Pages, allows you to create and store up to 8 presets. Presets can include focus aids, exposure aids, camera metadata, 3D LUTs. Once created, you can navigate between the presets merely by swiping the built-in joystick. You can see up to three presets displayed on the screen at the same time as you swipe between the presets, which is different than having to engage a menu system and trying to remember what the name of the preset means. You can see the effect of your configuration on the video.

    SmallHD MON-501 reviews

501 HDMI On-Camera Monitor with 3D LUT Support is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from SmallHD did it again! I am a 30 year film and video professional. We are currently shooting an indie feature film using a GH4 and needed a larger viewfinder for accurate focus. This does the trick. It is very light weight, runs a very long time on the 2 canon battery's and the focus peaking is the best on the market. It does run a little hot when working in high temps out side but it does not affect its use. I am waiting for the viewfinder attachment to come out and I will buy this in a second. In case you are not aware of it SmallHD monitors are used a great deal on large budget feature films and this one is just right for the little and big production. It is a little expensive but this is a long run piece of equipment.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 2 stars because when it worked, it was great. Beware! Smallhd customer service/repairs is absolutely dreadful. The products are great - I prefer them! But a friend cracked my monitor when using my literally new 501 monitor. After sending it in (and being told 1 week, it took almost 4,) and after being given a vague runaround every time I called or emailed, I finally have it back. They replaced the screen in an otherwise perfectly working, new 501. Guess what? The screen flickered and now it won't turn on. 4 weeks of waiting and not only did it come back to me scratched on the body (wasn't before,) but it is also not-functional. The products are great, but god help you if they ever go down, you will be entering the literally worst customer experience you have ever encountered. Beware!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Monitor, a Great Tool Purchased this when on special from B&H, and it proved to be a great product, at an excellent price. The monitor is light, yet robustly built, uses standard Canon batteries (space for 2, last all day), and has a high quality screen, ideal for using with the Sony A7SII and Sony A7RII. Has loads of features, focus assist, safe framing etc, and you can load LUTs and preset settings. It is pretty bright, though in bright sunshine, it needs a hood. Can also save screen grabs to file. No complaints at all (though need to activate via the web before use, so need an internet connection on first use only)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what you want I shoot on a Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera, and the built in LCD is not sufficient for critical focus with shallow depth of field shots. This monitor is the perfect solution. The high res display and ability to punch in with one click makes focusing a breeze. Since the BMPCC only outputs in film color space and dynamic range, the 3D LUT support is critical. The scopes are great, and the ability to switch between preset displays with one click is awesome (is keep one on a BMPCC to Rec709 LUT and one on a waveform monitor).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite toy right now! This is absolutely amazing. It works with every resolution and provides every function I could possibly ask for, focus peaking, false color, LUTs, overlays, zebras... Everything! It uses 2 Canon batteries that can be hot swapped or run on just one. It provides battery meaters as well. Can be used as a EVF with the optional attachment. Just the perfect accessory for DSLR, BMPCC, etc... It's built like a tank and I couldn't be happier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best on-camera monitor I wasn't shore if I should buy this monitor or to buy a cheaper version like blackmagic Video assist. I was so glad that I picked smallHD 501. The size/weight and image quality is just amazing. But my favorite feature is the software. How fast I can change from LUTs, false colors, zebra, peaking and zoom in for better focus. Everything with a joystick. If you still thinking about buying this just do it! :) you won't be sorry

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small Monitor packs a punch The SmallHD 501 monitor is the perfect unit for most of my work. I use it with my Canon C100 and Sony FS700. It's lightweight for run and gun set ups as well as my gimbal work. The resolution is incredible and helps immensely when pulling focus. It comes with so many other great features as well. If you're looking for a compact monitor to help you get the best shots, the 501 is a great option. Really, the only thing more I could ask for would be if it were able to be used as an external recorder as well. If you're considering this monitor, you won't be disappointed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best of its class, just wish it came with a lower pricetag The 501 is an incredible monitor that has all the feature you'd want and need in a small package. It looks sleek and feels great when handling. The 1080p resolution is AWESOME and incredible for focusing. The LUT Support is especially useful as you can create your own LUT on DaVinci and import it to use on set if you've created a specific look for your film. All in all, it's a great purchase (considering I got it on Deal Zone for $ less). Deducted one star for the cost and for not having SDI (SDI version is a whopping $). I've since resold it since having SDI is important to me as I also work as a 1st AC on narrative films. I love SmallHD but with the way monitors depreciate... ain't nobody got that kind of money!
