Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Overview

By B&H Photo's

A long-reaching telephoto optimized for sports, wildlife, and nature shooting, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Lens features an advanced optical design that both lessens the overall weight of the lens as well as contributes to improved image quality. Two fluorite and four extra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the aperture range while Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings help to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and clarity. Complementing the image-enhancing attributes, the lens also incorporates a front fluorine-coated meniscus glass element that, when paired with the weather-resistant magnesium-alloy barrel, supports working in inclement conditions.

Benefiting working in fast-paced conditions, as well as in low-light situations, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops, and dedicated Sport and Tripod Modes help to produce sharper imagery for specific shooting applications. A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Super telephoto designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 900mm equivalent focal length.
Two fluorite and four extra-low dispersion lens elements work to reduce chromatic aberrations; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens's use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Fluorine-coated front meniscus glass element affords protection to the optical system.
Dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium-alloy lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
A removable tripod collar is included with the lens for well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod. The collar ring also incorporates ball bearings for smooth transitions between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.
Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Reviews

Sorry to say this

Been a Nikon shooter for 35 years. My Nikon bio: I own five film Nikon cameras. I own eleven Nikon D lenses. Own five F mount cameras, D80, D7200 ( converted to IR ), D800. two D 850's. Upgraded to Z mount. I own three Z bodies, Z50, Z 6 with FTZ adapter, and finally Z9 + FTZ2. The 600 AF-S f/4E FL ED VR has been a disappointment. When it is functional the images are superb by any standard. I compete in photo competitions, consistently scoring among the highest. My issue is quality of construction/design. The lens is now in Nikon's repair department's hands for the third time! It will not auto-focus with any of my F or Z mount bodies. I am not saying don't purchase Nikon products. What you should understand is that just because you purchase a $13,000+ lens does not mean you can be assured of consistent dependability. My third repair. I invested in travel, lodging, and research for my shoot, and then I could not capture the wildlife. SO DISAPPOINTING! I am sorry I have to report this to you. Best of luck to all of you but understand lots of $$$$ does not guarantee that the best of equipment will work. Yes I purchased this lens from B&H.

I own this lens now for 3 years and simply love it. It s fast action overall sharpness and smooth bokeh is very pleasing. Its my got to lens in the car for drive by shots on the way home from work when i usually spot some birds to other wildlife. Combined with the Nikon D 5 its a perfect setup.I did not see any flaws and use it very often with the TC E III . Below picture taken with 1.4TCE @ f8 ,1/2000, iso 900

Absolutely amazing lens! I'm using mine with the Nikon D850 and I am extremely happy. Hesitated in the beginning (the size and weight), but now it's my new favorite!

If you're here, you know this lens is amazing. The images are tack sharp, the autofocus is unbelievably fast, and the lens itself is built like a tank. The lockable carrying case (suitcase, really) is a nice accessory if you need to put this thing on an airplane. So if you shoot wildlife or sports from a distance AND you can afford the price tag, yes, you should absolutely buy this lens.

I haven’t had this lens for very long and I’ve only had a small window to try it out, but so far the images I’ve gotten have been crystal clear. I would recommend this lens if you can afford the steep price.

Quality you just have to feel to believe.

So far I’ve not put this creation through it’s paces. I’ve yet to find a tripod gimble combination that will fit me. It’s just going to have to go on my studio tripod for now. It’s Like our heads and neck. Like balancing a Faberge’ egg on a pixie stick (BBT Sheldon Cooper.)

Excellent super telephoto

I waited along time for this lens. First to get the courage to spend the money and then four months of back order. Unfortunately I have not had a chance to extensively use the lens but my preliminary trial leads me to believe I will be very satisfied. Downside is tripod foot is not Arca-Swiss compatible and is too short for balancing on gimbal head (I knew this before I ordered the lens).

Amazing lens

Not a lot I can say that hasn't been said, but I will confirm what others have said. When I first took it out and tried it in the yard, it didn't seem to focus any faster than my 200-500 - which was one of the reasons I'd purchased this. I've concluded that the light wasn't good enough on that overcast late afternoon. I took it down to the lake where I like to shoot, and it was amazing! Fast focus, and frame-filling 600mm. When I looked at the shots on the computer, I was even more pleased. I've been happy with the sharpness of the 200-500, and just applied a little sharping in post processing, but these shots were absolutely sharp right out of the camera! Superb lens! Today I tried it with the 1.4 extender. Still pretty fast focus, and seems quite sharp - at least as sharp as the 200-500, and maybe even a little more so - and at 840mm!!! Another thing to add after 6 months of use: I have this attached to a D850, and _always_ shoot hand held. That's with a grip and extra battery on the D850. I'm a 150 pound 5'10, so you don't need to be muscle-bound to use this lens hand-held! I walk up to four miles with this thing (okay, walking is my exercise, so that part isn't unusual), but just carry it at my side with a Peak Design slide strap, and swing it up for shots! It's that easy to manage!

Anyone use the 600 for sports? I currently use a 300mm f/2.8 on a D850 and find it too short for soccer/rugby fields. great for baseball and basketball. Not sure if I need to go to 400-500-600mm.

I use the 80-400mm Nikon for soccer and get good results. I've tried it with a 2X converter and went back to the zoom alone.

question

Would this lens work with my Nikon D7100 camera and would the AF work at all f stops?
Asked by: Anonymous
This lens will work fine with the Nikon D7100. Concern about f/stops comes into play only if the maximum aperture is too small for whatever camera is being used to focus with. This is a concern with tele-extenders and cameras less than the top level. Since you are not using any tele-extender, and the focus aperture is f/4 and the lens will stop down to whatever aperture you select for the shot, there will be no issue regarding AF or f/stops.
