Nikon 600mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

A long-reaching telephoto optimized for sports, wildlife, and nature shooting, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Lens features an advanced optical design that both lessens the overall weight of the lens as well as contributes to improved image quality. Two fluorite and four extra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the aperture range while Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings help to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and clarity. Complementing the image-enhancing attributes, the lens also incorporates a front fluorine-coated meniscus glass element that, when paired with the weather-resistant magnesium-alloy barrel, supports working in inclement conditions.

Benefiting working in fast-paced conditions, as well as in low-light situations, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops, and dedicated Sport and Tripod Modes help to produce sharper imagery for specific shooting applications. A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Super telephoto designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 900mm equivalent focal length.
Two fluorite and four extra-low dispersion lens elements work to reduce chromatic aberrations; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens's use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Fluorine-coated front meniscus glass element affords protection to the optical system.
Dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium-alloy lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
A removable tripod collar is included with the lens for well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod. The collar ring also incorporates ball bearings for smooth transitions between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.
Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

    Nikon 600mm f/4.0 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from As good as it gets I owned the AF-S 500mm G VR and this new 600mm f/4E weighs the same but is definitely bigger to transport and carry around. I find the image quality to be better in every regard. Focus is extremely snappy and it takes the TC-1.4E very well. I went on a 7 hour hike yesterday and I took my 200-500 f/5.6 and left the 600 at home. I won't be able to do long hikes with it, but will use it at every opportunity I can. Incredible sharpness and smooth out of focus backgrounds. The accessories are definitely a consideration, around $2K spent on beefier tripod, gimbal, monopod and bags but that's just part of owning this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens I was using nikon 400mm f2.8VR for bird photography in Pakistan since 3 years, range was not good enough for birds so u used to attach TC20E-III with 400mm, got good range but with slow focusing speed, Now I have upgraded it with Nikon 600mm f4E FLED since one month, it is fast focusing n sharp lens even with TC14E-III. VR is improved and it gets sharp result even at 1/125 shutterspeed. I recommend this lens for those who want to buy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shedding Pounds It goes without saying that Nikon's professional primes are top-tier tools. My guess is that anyone looking to purchase one of the new fluorite models is really asking themselves the question of whether or not the FL is worth the additional magnum duffel of cash that must be forked over vs. the previous model(s). The answer is all about weight. If you are a tripod shooter, don't do much air travel with your gear, and seldom pack your prime around then you can save the extra coin. DXO has not reviewed the 600FL or 500FL yet, but it's obvious based on tests of the 400FL that these new designs are about shedding pounds and that optical performance is equivalent. If you are like me, and have been bent into the posture of neanderthal man from lurching around mountainous terrain with a lens roughly equivalent in weight and ergonomics to an adolescent pachyderm...then absolutely you should get the FL version. This 600FL is about 3 pounds lighter than the previous 600/4, 2 pounds lighter than the old 400/2.8, and even weighs 1/5th of a pound less than the outgoing 500/4. It's not just total weight, however, because the new design is much less end heavy and more balanced as a whole. Can you handhold it? Well, I have been handholding the 10-pound 400/2.8 for years so this 8-pound 600 feels dramatically easier to handle in every regard. It's still physically large and requires good technique but since weight has been my #1 sore spot (literally) regarding super telephotos I pre-ordered this lens as soon as I saw the technical specifications. The price hurts but the FL primes are significantly easier to handle, carry, mount on support equipment, handhold, and travel with. If those things are deciding factors for you, it's an investment you won't regret.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeds my expectations I finally took the dive and bought this magnificent piece of engineering art after years of lusting. Even more so when the new E version came out. The Nikkor 600mm f/4E FL ED VR is the best lens I've ever used and I have a lot of Nikkor Gold-Ring N lenses, including the recently introduced 400mm f/2.8E. The deep and subtle color rendition, bokeh, flair resistance, light weight and spectacular clarity/ sharpness make it stand out. The ability to point it directly in the direction of the sun and still have ample contrast and flair resistance is truly impressive. Autofocus is virtually instant. VR works extremely well as I've achieved tack sharp test images at 1/60th of a second hand-held with static objects. My copy doesn't seem to need any calibration to my body as autofocus seems perfect. I primarily use it with my trusty D4S body with dynamic 9 or AF-C single point. There is one caveat- The screw that locks the carbon-fiber lens hood is poorly designed in my opinion. If you carry the lens with the strap and it has a chance to rub up against your thigh for example, the chances are good the friction will work the lens hood loose as I learned the hard way on a sandy beach. (Simply rotate the screw away from potential rubbing).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Lens! I was able to find a used version through B&H which saved a few bucks over new and I am glad I did. I owned the old 600 f4G version and the weight of the lens made it cumbersome. When I opened the case of the new 600 FL version it was an epiphany similar to unboxing the 300 PF and seeing the weight savings versus its predecessor. It is still a giant lens but cutting the weight down to 8.5lbs from over 11 makes a tremendous difference in usability. I no longer dread lifting the lens out of my backpack. Optical quality is stellar as would be expected from a lens like this. Balances great on a gimbal head and is actually hand hold-able in a pinch if needed...no way I would have tried with the G version.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Fantastic This is the sharpest camera lens I have ever owned. The tiny feather details it captures on birds is astounding. I am using it coupled with small pixel bodies with no anti-aliasing filter (D500 or D850) and I am repeatedly thrilled to bird with it. Even massively cropped this combo can really perform -- even if cropped to where pixels are shown 1:1 on screen, it still looks sharp. The out of focus areas and the color rendition can make scenes look like paintings. The bokeh is gorgeous at f/4 and the lens is still insanely sharp. This is a breathtaking optic. I used a 500mm G for the year prior and this lens handily beats it for birding. The additional image scale from the extra 100mm is a very big deal. I had to tune auto-focus on my D850 to +15 for my sample of this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unsurpassed Opti f you are even slightly thinking about purchasing this lens and can afford it, well that means you want it so just pull the trigger, but also know it will tick off the wife Hehe :-) I would suggest procuring this puppy because it truly is an amazing piece of glass that you will never ever regret owning!! What an extrordinary instrument to have in my possession, I feel blessed ! Below are my first 3 pics ever taken with the new Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Lens with the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III with Nikon D500 at a whopping 1260mm of focal length... The Mourning Doves swooped in my backyard as I was packing up my Gitzo 5 series Tripod with Wimberley Gimbal Head I shot these doves hand held at 1/250th, ISO 1000, @ f/5.6 with 1.4 Tele puts it at 1260mm... The VR is truly amazing!! Just purchase this bad boy it's worth every penny... And B&H is the only store I ever purchase from because there customer service is second to none!!! Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXCELLENT OPTICS FOR LONG REACH As my title suggests, I bought this lens mostly for maximum reach. When this lens first arrived at my house I immediately put it to work to test it out. I almost returned it until I figured out how to work with this lens because it is different from any other lenses I have including other telephoto lenses. I wasn't getting sharp photos until I figured out that I had to use the normal VR setting on the lens regardless of the shutter speed in order for the lens to compensate for shutter, tripod and camera vibrations. I have been used to using my also an excellent optical old Nikon 300mm f/4 lens for birding/wildlife and even portraits which has no VR and never needed VR and got excellent photos with it. Now when I shoot wildlife, I have my new 600 fl F/4 vr lens w/1.4 tele mounted on my Nikon D7200 and mounted on my heavy duty Induro tripod w/gimbal head for the long reach photos while at the same time I have my old Nikon 300 F/4 w/1.4 tele mounted on my Nikon D4 which I shoot handheld for the closer ups and birds in flight photos. With these two set ups, I have all of my bases covered and both systems produce excellent quality photos that fill the frame at almost any distance near or far. Even if you have to splurge a little, get this lens - you will not regret it and will be glad you got it. Happy shooting
